Icon Editor Issues with v2 Icons
« on: September 10, 2016, 04:20:07 pm »
Hi

I was organizing some OS/2 icons and creating/editing some others. I thought it might be a good idea to start saving the icons on 128x128 on Deep color (24-bit).  PMView saves the icons in OS/2 2.x and OS/2 1.x format without issues. Both versions looks fine on OS/2 desktop and opens fine on Icon Editor.

But if I save those icons on OS/2 2.x format on Icon Editor, after saving it for the first time it saves the file and looks good. But If I try to edit those icons again (with Icon Editor) it looks wrong (check picture) and I can not longer save it because some memory issue error.

Does somebody experience that issue? Or is it something of my local workstation?
I'm thinking on sticking with format 1.x so Icon Editor can still open those.

Regards

It's more complex topic. PMView's handling of OS/2 icon formats is quite wrong, especially dealing with transparency and palettes. OS/2 Icon Editor is not perfect but the things that do work produce correct results. In fact there are at least 5 different formats for OS/2 ICO.
* OS/2 1.1
* OS/2 1.2
* OS/2 2.0
* OS/2 2.0 RLE

May be I misread the message, but how do you get 128x128 pixel icons visible on the desktop as 128x128 icon?
Iconeditor can go up to 256x256 icons, but it will slow down your system because those icons take a lot of space compared to the 40x40 icons. I tried to use a 256x256 icon, but it comes back as a 40x40 on the desktop, even if you have only 1 icon with 256x256 as icon instead of multipage icons with 16x16, 20x20, 32x32 and 40x40 icons.

The actual size of icon display depends on Presentation Device Driver AFAIK. 8514 and XGA will use 40x40 size while device-independent and VGA only 32x32. I'm not sure about SNAP. Some drivers (Matrox?) had special options to change icon size.
All this terminology leads to a lot of confusion when using Icon Editor nowadays. For instance it's still possible to create icons for OS/2 1.1 PM - but not very logical. Simply using one device with B/W 1.1 and save it with 1.2 format (unfortunately 1.1 format is grayed out in UI) will create the typical 288 byte size.

Hi

I was trying that "Big Icon" functionality on eCS 2.2. There is a difference (for example) if you put your desktop on 128x128 and you have an 40x40 icon and 128x128 icon. The 40x40 icon looks blurry on the edges, while the 128x128 icon looks with sharp edges (kind of obvious why).

I had been testing those on a VM with SNAP without performance issues and the icons are showing fine on 40x40 or 128x128, no matter the size you set up for the desktop/folder with "Big Icon".

When it became released, never saw an announcement about.

I would check if 40x40 is really displayed and not scaled down to 32x32 by WPS.

I don't know what you mean by "Big Icon", never used this program.

It is on the latest eCS 2.2 beta, it is installed by default. I think that is the "Sunny Icons" that was included on eCS 2.2 beta.

Here are some samples of an low resolution icon being saved on other sizes.

Now I realize, you're talking about this lousy russian hack that puts PNG images to file's EA. That seems to have almost nothing to do with OS/2 Presentation Manager icon formats at all. I was not aware of bundling with this crap.

Hi.

On this case I'm not using PNG icons, I'm just using to see how expanded icons shows up.

Hi.

Yes, I have "SET ENH_STRETCH=NO" on the Config.sys.

I had disabled it (REM) and tried it out too. I didn't noticed any difference.
