Using ArcaOS 5.01

Installing eSchemes makes the whole system unstable.

Installing Animated mouse pointer 1.01 locks the system up. 

Both resulted in me installing ArcaOS 5.01 again.

Try to stay away from the bundled Russian shareware programs. A lot of them are slow or unstable by design.

Both resulted in me installing ArcaOS 5.01 again.

If eSchemes failed while I was testing and it would hang the desktop.
Reboot the system to the command line. Rename the eSchemes directory.
Reboot, DLL's can no longer be found by the WPS.
Run Checkini.exe and presto. Or does that not fix the crashes then ?

Not certain if you can do the same with animated mouse pointers.

That is the reason why I do not use any of these programs with my Up-To-Date OS/2 Clones, not even an eco runtime.

What programs work well with ArcaOS.

XIT 2.6 - More desktop fluff- like the scroll and move back to parent folder buttons.
WPSec 2.15  - what a great desktop security program

FM/2
FileStar 2  - These are 2 of the most powerful file managers on the planet

Smalled 2.0.  One of the best editors I have come across
Pastry 1.06 - a good program for picking and choosing what is copied to the clipboard

XfDisk 5.0  - if one needs a virtual floppy for install of some older programs
Ramdisk- if one wants a RAM disk
KillFold-fix - Closes all open folders  - use as a widget in the XCenter
PMdll - a good program for checking exe/dll breakage

PM123 1.37 - a good music program
PMView 3.79 - version now handles transparent images

As I recall, this causes problems, if you use XWorkplace, which is far more useful.

Well, there really is no such thing as desktop security, on any platform, and I doubt if this one does any better than any other.

FM/2 works pretty well, but there are far too many features for it to be useful. I haven't used Filestar, for years. As I recall, it also has far too many features.

Never used Smalled. I prefer the built in Text editor. I never heard of Pastry, and I suspect that you would find DragText (included in ArcaOS) to be far more useful, if you take the time to learn it.

I seem to recall XfDisk, but have had no use for a diskette, for many years now. RAMDISK - use the one supplied with ArcaOS, The setup is in System Setup. It will use memory above the 4 GB mark, if you have it. Never heard of KillFold-fix, and I can't even imagine why you would want to do that. PMdll is included in ArcaOS.

PM123 1.41 works well. Nothing is better than PMView.

True, the programs that come with ArcaOS work as expected.  My hats off to the develop and testing teams. They did a great job ensuring that everything works as it should.

True, FM/2 can do anything under the sun.   So can ArcaOS.  Using this reasoning, should I quit using ArcaOS because the operating system itself is so powerful.   I am not going to stop using it because it can do so much more than Windows, MacOS, and Linux.  In my opinion, each compliments the another.  With the multidesktop feature, I can open FM/2 up on each desktop and work and move between the desktops doing various file management.   Truth be told, when everyone was leaving OS/2 for Windows, this one program kept me from leaving.

XIT works OK with XWP.  The key is to disable any overlapping features in XIT.  I primarily use it for some of the additional button features it has.  I like the additional buttons such as Refresh, Roll up/down, open and move to the parent folder, and taskbar button.

I did not know about the RAM disk that comes with ArcaOS.  Thanks for the tip.

Why would I use a program like KillFold.  It makes it easy to close a bunch of open folders with just one mouse cllick. 

PMView is definitely a nice graphics viewer.

As for WPSec, it allows individuals to use your computer and desktop while locking them out of important key areas of your desktop.  And true, nothing is ever absolutely secure.

But unfortunately not for every image format correctly - be careful. Especially conversions between OS/2 bitmap formats to PNG can make some trouble. So it's a good idea to have a second gun loaded.
