Microsoft takeover of GitHub
« on: June 05, 2018, 11:42:42 am »
Just wondering what effect the Microsoft takeover of GitHub will have on any of the OS/2 applications hosted on there knowing the MS mantra of 'embrace, extend and extinguish'?

CIRCA MAY 2014 -the logo of the brand "GitHub".

Microsoft has agreed to acquire development platform GitHub in a deal worth $7.5bn, sending developers scurrying for cover.

The Office-maker is chuffed to call itself the most active organisation on GitHub, claiming more than two million commits made to projects. The Seattle software slinger has its origins in development tools and platforms, and the acquisition can be seen as a return to its roots.

"We recognize the responsibility we take on with this agreement," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

"We are committed to being stewards of the GitHub community, which will retain its developer-first ethos, operate independently, and remain an open platform. We will always listen to developer feedback and invest in both fundamentals and new capabilities.

Hi

It was not a good news since I also have the OS2World repository at Github (https://github.com/os2world). But for the moment I'm not freaking out. More than the "'embrace, extend and extinguish", I'm more concern that Microsoft will screw the Github free service by trying to squeeze more profit from their investment.

For the moment I will have a local backup of the OS/2 projects and if the service changes in an wrong way I will replicate the source code somewhere else. Everyone is also free to backup any of the OS/2 projects.

Regards

And if you read the comments to that item and the followup article you will find that most developers are up in arms against the M$ takeover.  Nothing good can come from it.

You must remember that zdnet has been an avid supporter of all things Microsoft for a long while and anything they produce should be taken with a shovel full of salt.

Sad Nad says that we should judge M$ by its actions and a lot of devs are doing that and pulling their code from GitHub as a consequence see the comments on https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/06/04/nadella_tells_worried_github_devs_judge_us_by_our_actions/

Does anyone trust M$ after their forced install of win 10 and the slurping of all users personnel data, which you can't turn off.
