File system is dirty! Need help!
« on: September 07, 2018, 01:15:16 am »
[L:\]chkdsk /F
The current hard disk drive is: L:
The type of file system for the disk is JFS.
The JFS file system program has been started.
CHKDSK  Block size in bytes:  4096
CHKDSK  File system size in blocks:  51508326
CHKDSK *Phase 0 - Replay Journal Log
CHKDSK *Phase 1 - Check Blocks, Files/Directories, and Directory Entries
CHKDSK  Duplicate block references have been detected in meta-data.
CHKDSK CANNOT CONTINUE.
CHKDSK  File system is dirty.
    ......@..

Any ideas will REALLY be appreciated. I thought I might be able to fix this with DFSee, but no luck so far

Thanks  klipp

Hi klipp

Is chkdsk located on drive L: ?
Is drive L: the boot drive?

If the answer to either of the above is "Yes" that could be the cause of the chkdsk failure.

Either follow Eugenes suggestion or modify config.sys to force a chkdsk during boot, hopefully that will help.

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete & Eugene, Boot drive is K: --I'm running chkdsk /f:3 on K:   (K:/chkdsk L: /f:3)and chkdsk ing Drive L:
I can find no chkdsk.exe on the install CD! (ArcaOS 5.0.3)
Drive L: has eCS 2.2-b2 installed so it has a chkdsk.exe on it.
This all happened during a power outage.

Thanks for the reply's -- I'm desperate! Any other suggestions?

Experience with chkdsk problems on JFS formatted partitions is when they throw up the 'can't continue' fault the only option is the reformat and restore from backup.

For some reason there doesn't appear to be a robust way of recovering anything from a JFS partition if the meta-data is corrupted.

Hi klipp

You mention trying to fix the problem using dfsee so if Registered ask for Jans help.

I've mounted the partition read only on Linux and recovered files that way when chkdsk (and fsck) was faiing. IIRC, once the Linux fsck worked when the OS/2 chkdsk failed.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the information but I do see a potential problem.  If you don't have Linux on the same machine you will need a live Linux DVD and a USB drive for the recovered files (I assume it will work with a live Linux DVD) otherwise it means removing the HD and inserting it into a Linux box.

Hi Ivan,

A live Ubuntu or derivative such as Mint CD should work fine as it ships with JFS (and HPFS) support. In my case I just copied the files to a different partition.
Unluckily it is not a simple procedure as you have to go to the command line, mount the partition as read only using sudo and such as OS/2 JFS partitions are only accessible as root under Linux due to the lack of permissions though it is possible to add them. At the time I had to read a few man pages to learn how to do it and now forget the exact procedure.
You could use a USB stick formatted by OS/2's JFS. Linux can access OS/2 JFS but not the other way.
If the poster has a valid DFsee license, getting Jan's help is probably the easiest route. As it looks like only the journal is damaged, he should be able to recover everything except his most recent work if he was writing to the disk when the power failed.

THANKS to all of you, I'm a little smarter now! Actually pulling the hard drive and putting it in a machine with Linux installed is no problem, I may play with that idea if don't get anywhere after getting Jan's help. I compile with eCS using the OS4 kernel for some applications that don't like the newer updates to libcx and other updates to libc.

I've attached the only reference to JFS chkdsk I have (courtesy of Lewi's blog posting)...formatting is crappy, since I printed to a PDF docu in order to keep it, but head on over to his blog and search for it and you'll get a prettier result.

Anyways, maybe something there will work for you as far as forcing chkdsk to do certain things?
