ArcaOS fix for Windows seamless problem ?
« on: April 07, 2019, 11:02:32 pm »
I am waiting for an ArcaOS fix to solve the Win16 seamless windows problem. Does anyone heared about any efforts? On my old computer, it did work with eCS 1.2 and SNAP. Not only the missing seamless functionality is a problem, the performance of the Win16-only drivers is extremeley bad.

Hi Martin,

DId you open a ticket at https://mantis.arcanoae.com to ask Arca Noae ?

Based on my time working at Mensys I can partly answer your question. It does matter if you *NOT* (post updated!) use Panorama, the IBM GRADD or SNAP driver. All of these drivers are GRADD (a graphics driver model from IBM).  The driver that provides the video support for DOS and as far as I can tell WIN/OS2 support as well is VSVGA.SYS.

Just an educated guess. On eCS 1.2 you where running an *older* computer with a different video card.
You see VSVGA.SYS as far as I understand it is very depended on the video hardware .
Infact as far its clear to me, even when you run SNAP with a native video driver (that talks to the video chipset directly)
the video support for VDM's (DOS and WIN/OS2) is still provided via VSVGA.SYS.

This can also explain WHY the video performance of WIN/OS2 is not that  fast.
The reason you see certain video modes (such as seamless WIN/OS2 ) not working is depended on the video card you have.

Try this switch:
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/VSVGA.SYS

But it will most likely not resolve your WIN/OS2 issue.

I think the problems are way more complex than are pictured here. Roderick gives a hint about video and virtual dos machines, but there are a lot of moving parts. On my machine WinOS2 windowed session appears to work perfectly. I have ArcaOS 5.0.3 plus some upgrades.

Hi Martin

It can also be interesting if you can provide your hardware specs (maybe the PCI.exe report) of the machines were you are experiencing the problems. It may be also useful to provide that to Arca Noae if you are opening a ticket.

If opening a ticket, use testlog.cmd rather then pci output. Unluckily some video cards are just missing stuff that Panorama needs to use DOS (including WinOS2) sessions, especially seemless. Which leads to one solution, a different card.
