CUPS EPSON ET-4700 printer problems
« on: September 19, 2019, 01:33:00 pm »
I recently bought this printer, and I was trying to make it work with cups.
But using the Epson-ET-4700_Series-epson-escpr-en.ppd shows me this error:
ERROR IN STATUS:
Idle - "Archivo "/@unixroot/usr/lib/cups/filter/epson-escpr-wrapper.exe"
no disponible: No such file or directory"
I believe that if it should be possible, in fact, I could print the cups test page,
with the only failure that the upper and lower lines of the frame were missing
and using another driver, the one from T33 with the CX5100
But in this case I can only print the test page
Suggestions?

The head in the ppd show:

Any particular reason for using CUPS?

I ask because all my Brother printers that have a PPD have been added to the PSPRINT driver and are available using SLPR over the network.

Hi roberto

Point your browser to the cups gui http://localhost:631/admin

Check the option "Save debugging information for troubleshooting" then click Change Settings.

Attempt to print the cups test page and, hopefully, the log will give us a clue as to what is going wrong.

Pete

hello pete
I attached a pdf with the errorlog.pdf, it doesn't tell me anything.
Hello Ivan

I understand that that works for you because your printers are compatible postscript3.
I have some brother that I use as a scaner, but as a printer they don't work.

regards

Hi roberto,

Sorry about possibly leading you down the wrong track but that was the only way I could get my DCP-9020cdw (colour laser / scanner) and HL-3170cdw (colour laser) to work over the network.  I could never get CUPS to work so I looked for an alternative and it works.  I even use the Brother Linux drivers on my two Linux computers rather than CUPS.

Hi roberto

Why in pdf format? -  cups logs are usually plain text - and why so small?

You need to look through the error log for lines starting with [E] which may give a clue as to the problem... Looks like gutenprint52+usb failure close to the start of the log. Not sure what ippfind is but it looks like it may be missing (or installed in the wrong place) and further down the log it looks like \"/@unixroot/usr/lib/cups/filter/epson-escpr-wrapper.exe\" is missing/not found.

Possibly you have an incomplete installation...

Regards

Pete

Looks like you're trying to install a linux ppd on OS/2?? This has a reasonable chance of working for a postscript printer, however this one seems to need an external filter (epson-escpr-wrapper) which isn't available for OS/2.

Unless Epson has publushed the code for epson-escpr-wrapper or some other open source driver like gutenprint supports this model, you might be out of luck.

Roberto,

On the ArcaNoae subscriber RPM repository, there are Epson CUPS drivers. Did you try installing those? There is no ET-4700 listed in it, but there is ET-4500 and ET-4550. Maybe one of those would work...

Hi Paul
You are right, first try the driver of other linux for this printer, but the filters failed. Then in cups, modify the driver for the CX5100, and that is when I could print the test page on cups.
The code for epson-escpr-wrapper is available.
Thank you for your effort.

Hello david,
My first news about another repository.
I only see these repositories:
arcanoae-rel
netlabs-rel
I know the netlabs-exp

The ET4500 and 4550 drivers use the same filter us ET4700, so it may work. Can you tell me what that repository is called?
Is it bought separately?
Thank you

Roberto,

If you have a subscription to ArcaNoae you can use the arcanoae-sub repository. Go to ANPM, click on 'Manage' -> 'Repositories...' then 'Repository => 'Add...'. Name it what you like, the URL is: 'https://repos.arcanoae.com/subscription/$releasever'. Check the 'Secure Repository' box, then enter your user name and password you use to get drivers etc. at the ArcaNoae website. Restart ANPM and now you should be able to see the items on the repository....

Make sure your user name does not include the email part, for example, eugene rather then eugene@example.com

The driver you're looking for is here: http://e-vertise.com/misc/epsonink-v090b.zip

This file contains 2 other zips: my port of Epson's open-source CUPS-driver, and an OS/2 Postscript driver based on PSPRINT that I pre-configured to support 511 models of Epson Inkjet printer.

Both require MANUAL installation. Please follow the enclosed directions *exactly*.

David
The new repository has worked well. Thank you

Eugene
Make a backup before installing the repository package.
I have failed cups to start it and try to modify another printer
With the following error:
Unable to get list of printer drivers
error 0

Rich
Thank you very much for the zip.
After the failure with the repository, try to install the zip with the readme,
but I failed to do the unzip, as I show you:
[C:\usr]unzip ei-cups-v090.zip
Archive:  ei-cups-v090.zip
replace lib/cups/filter/epson-escpr-wrapper.exe? [y]es, [n]o, [A]ll, [N]one, [r]
ename: y
  inflating: lib/cups/filter/epson-escpr-wrapper.exe
replace lib/cups/filter/epson-escpr.exe? [y]es, [n]o, [A]ll, [N]one, [r]ename: y

And at this point he remained without continuing to kill the process.
Then with the Archive Tool program I could do the unzip without problems.

Finally the PSPRINT worked fine, and the printer is printing well.
But if I use the SLPR port it prints me as eps text, and if I use the CUPS port
Print me right.
