Yahoo Groups End of Life
« on: October 16, 2019, 06:43:51 pm »
FYI:

Quote
"Understand what's changing in Yahoo Groups

Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 21, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded."
- Source

I'm looking for alternatives on how to save the data from the OS/2 - eComStation related groups.

I had connected to the "Yahoo Privacy Dashboard - https://yahoo.mydashboard.oath.com " to download whatever I can. It says it may take up to 30 days to generate the backup for me to download.

According to my Yahoo Group account I'm registered to:
mysql-os2, ISPLI, SETI-WARP, os2ddprog, eComStation, os2user, clubos2, OS2-OCR

If there are other OS/2 related yahoo groups please let me know.

Once I got the backup I will check if it is useful or not.

Some of the groups I'm registered -
eComStation
ecsapps
injoy_news
lcmd
MULTISOUND
odinusers
sane-os2
Dev_Corner
dfsee-support
smartsynchronize
os2ddprog

Most of them do not have a lot of traffic in the last years and I probably will not miss very much when they are gone. I think os2ddprog is the one with the most valuable content for me. But as I got all of the messages as email I've them locally back to the year 2000 ;-) Just checked some of them - still very interesting stuff there.

Hi Andi B.

Do you have a way to backup and share all those e-mail from your e-mail client? It does not matter if it is a big file, we can store it on archive.org, and later, with more time, maybe it can be organized.

I'll add
OS2-Linux
Gimp-OS2
Warpbrowsers
OS2-Nice
OS2Hardware
OS2-mt

Most are dead with the occasional message on Warpbrowsers.

Hi

FYI: The backup produced by "Yahoo Privacy Dashboard - https://yahoo.mydashboard.oath.com " is just the setting data. So it does not has content.

I found a message that says "To download content and other groups data, please use the Groups Download Manager or go to https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata"

I'm trying that one now, it also tells me that it will notify me once the backup is ready. Let's see how it works.

I've triggered the content download the day before yesterday. Still not finished.

Side note - I've no problem when yahoo vanish forever. These idiots don't let me log to my account in as long as I do not enter an extra code they send per email. Beside name and password. Again, when I need to see me groups I need to login with my 1) name 2) password 3) extra code sent by email every time I want to log in (once a day the last days although I've checked stay logged in). How stupid can some service be? Moreover, until I came to that point I had to play this silly google captcha crap for minutes until they believed me that I'm not a robot. Honestly I resign such crappy service in the future and wish the worst for yahoo.

Closing down services won't make Yahoo any more popular. I wonder why they do that. What's yahoo for, these days anyway? Everybody does his searches with google or duckduckgo. Now groups are gone... so.. why not close down Yahoo for good?

Reading the latest promi news can be done elsewere too.. :>

Hi

Maybe it would be interesting to post a final message on each group telling the users to visit other OS/2 related sites.

Like remembering users to visit some other sites like:

http://www.os2world.com/
http://os2news.warpstock.org/
http://www.arcaos.com/
http://www.warpstock.org/
http://www.os2voice.org/
http://www.os2.org/
http://www.ecomstation.ru/
http://www.ecsoft2.org/
http://www.os2.jp/
http://www.netlabs.org/
http://www.warpstock.eu/

What will you add to the list ??

Yes, what's a requirement to join the list? Do EDM/2, Hobbes or os2site.com qualify?

Hi.

Yahoo seems to give a little more time to the groups. They changes to message to block any new uploads content to Oct 28.

Quote
Attention: Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. Sending/Receiving email functionality is not going away, you can continue to communicate via any email client with your group members.

I'm not sure if the groups are still going to work as a normal e-mail newsgroup, but just in case I want the backup.
The site https://yahoo.mydashboard.oath.com is still not providing me a backup, it ask me to keep waiting.

Any help using the Python script to download the data is welcome. I don't have python skills.

I just got an email which told me my data is ready for download. But when I log in there is
Quote
Your Yahoo Groups data

Your download request has been completed, but no data of this type is available in your account.
After waiting numerous days for the data now another proof of yahoos inability to manage things right. More and more I think this whole action is only cause the wanted your newest data including phone numbers. Nothing else.

Hi

Today I checked https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata and a 313MB file was available for me.

It has a folder for each group I'm register and it has some files:
- files.zip
- links.zip
- messages.zip
- photos_and_attachments.zip

It looks like the messages are there. I'm still checking.

Now I got a file for one of my accounts. There I've two groups it seems so I got two messages.zip files beside the links and files archives. In messages.zip is a MBOX which I could import *) into SM email client. Now I've the messages of the DevCorner (2427 messages) und FAT32 (1211) groups available from my SM email. Messages go back until 2003.

*) I've installed ImportExportTool 3.3.2 as add-on to my SM2.42.9. for other reasons. But it's handy to have it for this yahoo group messages too. No clue if you can import such MBOX files without this add-on.

I got this email from Yahoo this morning...
Dear Group Moderators and Members,

Thank you for your commitment to Yahoo and for helping us define the power of digital communities. Eighteen years ago, we combined the functionality of a site called eGroups.com with a precursor community platform called Yahoo Clubs to launch Yahoo Groups. Since then, you and millions of others have helped prove our hypothesis, by creating and joining more than 10 Million groups.

A lot has changed about the Internet since 2001, including the ways most people now use Yahoo Groups. Today, most Yahoo Groups activity happens in your email inbox, not on the bulletin boards where Yahoo Groups started in the pre-smartphone age. Increasingly, people want content and connections coming directly to them, and this is why we continue to invest in Yahoo Mail -- including the recent launch of a new Yahoo Mail app that is currently the highest-rated email app in the App Store and Google Play.

So, as our users’ habits have evolved, we have begun the process of evolving our approach to help active Yahoo Groups thrive and migrate to our email platform. To help you plan for these changes, below is the schedule of how this transition will happen.

Beginning October 28, 2019:

Users will be able to join a Yahoo Group only through an invite from the Group Moderator or by submitting a request to join a Group, which requires approval by the Group Moderator.
Since we are moving Group communication from posting on message boards to email distribution, uploading and hosting of new content will also be disabled on the Yahoo Groups website.

Beginning December 14, 2019:

All Groups will be made private and any content that was previously uploaded via the website will be removed. We believe privacy is critical and made this decision to better align with our overall principles.
If you would like to keep any of the content you’ve posted or stored in the past within your Yahoo Group, please download it by December 14 by accessing this link.

As these dates get closer, we will send follow-up reminders. More information about the upcoming changes can be found here.

While this evolution of Yahoo Groups is inspired by how we see the platform being used today, we know change can be difficult. Here are a few important facts as we make this transition:

1. Yahoo Groups is not going away - We know that our users are deeply passionate about connecting around shared interests, and we are evolving Groups to better align with how you use it today.

2. New groups can still be formed - Users can continue to connect with others around their common bonds and interests. From animal rescues to sporting and activity groups, civic organizations to local PTAs, members of our Yahoo Groups will remain connected and able to share their activities and interests. All of the content that you have shared previously on the website, can continue to be shared via email.

We know that Yahoo Groups is an important online extension of your real-life group of friends, interests and communities, and we are committed to supporting communities that rely on Yahoo Groups. Thanks for coming along with us this far. We look forward to seeing where the technology -- and you -- take us in the decades to come.

Sincerely,
The Groups Team
