Hi Paul

I tested it (Release version) with ArcaOS 5.0.7 VM guest on VBox 6.1.38 (Windows 10 21H2 host).
- VM ICH AC97: Works, Audio control working, no traps.
- VM Intel HD Audio: Works, Audio control working, no traps.

Thanks guys. I spent some time today creating an uniaud32-exp branch, so that I can maintain the Long Term Support 5.15.x codebase in uniaud32-next whilst seeing if I can get the current kernel (5.19.x) working. I worked through the code (5.16.x, 5.17.x, etc) and have the current released kernel (5.19.9) compiling.

AC97 is working; HDA is not detecting hardware for some reason since the update to 5.16.x

More as time permits....

Well that was quicker than I thought - I only tested with AC97 and HDA on virtualbox so far.... https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.19.9-20220918.zip

Code is in: http://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/browser/GPL/branches/uniaud32-exp

My intent is that once the next LTS kernel is decided (likely 6.0 or maybe 6.1); I'll merge the uniaud32-exp code back into uniaud32-next.

A typical linux kernel release is only supported for about 3 months, by which time another kernel has been released. Whatever kernel is current at the end of a calendar year, gets supported for at least a couple of years.

I'll try test on my T470s a bit later today.
edit: sound works on my T470s

Heh Paul!

Edit2: @Mark - can you please generate a log with the debug driver from https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-3.2.102.zip ? I don't expect it to produce audio - but it will give me a log that corresponds with https://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/changeset/612

Cheers,

Paul

While you've been playing around with new exp's I haven't been idle - just wanted to make sure what I'm reporting is reproducible.

Thanks for access to your TRAC archives.

I've traced the problem with the ALC892 chipset to something between build 3.8.13 (File version 2.2.5) and build 3.9.11 (File Version 2.2.5). It seems to have broke then. I've attached the testlogs below for both, using the debug versions of both.

I'm now using the release version of 3.8.13 successfully for both system sounds and PM123 - but I don't know what different changes were committed to TRAC at the time.

Hopefully that helps you out and Best!

Thanks - this should be useful. I'll try and investigate this week. It's a short week here - Thursday is a Public Holiday for QEII, and I'm taking a leave day on Friday to turn it into a long weekend.

Cheers,

So you actually take time off?!?!?!?!

WOW, I thought you were active 24 hours a day <sic>

The Funeral will be broadcast here starting 0300 MST, Monday - so will be in bed early - whether you love or hate the monarchy this is indeed the end of an era, and needs to be acknowledged, in this Year of Strange .........

In Alberta it will be a day of mourning but not a holiday - our former Premier (who still thinks he is) is in the UK at the moment saying he's there for Alberta ............ !

My wife is 75, I'm 63 ............ and we've never thought of anyone other than Elizabeth being there, who was actually was older than us all ........... yet another influence that is no longer stable in our lives.

Will raise a glass to the Queen tomorrow ........... I just hope no one tries to disrupt the proceedings with their particular grievance and Best, Sir!

And BTW - 5.19.9 works fine on Manticore II with the AD1988B Chipset and Sound Blaster Recon 3D, only if a cold reboot is involved.

Best!

This is VERY helpful! I dug out an old drive with an older copy of my eCS-udrive.vdi and found the source folders for:
uniaud32-linux-3.8.13
uniaud32-linux-3.9.11

A diff of the changes is at https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-3.8.13-3.9.11.diff

Unfortunately, this is a large-ish diff - I'll have a look for anything obvious when I get a moment - hopefully it will be something obvious...

Edit: 1st attempt - hda_intel.c from 3.9.11 backlevelled to the 3.8.13 version - https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-3.9.11-20220919.zip

I most definitely take time off :) We don't have skin kids - and just the one dog these days, so my method of relaxation in the evening is to look at code. The funeral is on at a much more civilised time here - started at around 7pm :) But we will record it and watch at our leisure - so we can fast forward the boring bits :) Whilst I was born in the UK ( we emigrated in 1977 when I was two) I wouldn't say I'm a monarchist - but at the same time - why change a system of government that isn't broken?

Anyway I digress - alcohol free day for us today - will have a glass with dinner tomorrow :P

Cheers,

Paul

Not sure if what I'm seeing here may be in some way related to what Mark is reporting. However, the uniaud32-linux-5.15.65-20220910b.zip drop results in a HARD trap while doing MPLAYER playback. So basically while watching any video and attempting to move back or forward causes the sync-up function to eventually freeze and the whole system is non-responsive.

I've attached my current test-matrix, bottom line: I always go back to the 3.16.85 release which has been rock-solid here (this is what's prompting me to ask whether this is similar situation to what Mark is seeing).

I will try this test version next. Thanks, as always!

Heh Dariusz

Long time no talk. Hows it going?

Actually, the problem we're trying to solve is with the RealTek ALC892 chipset in one of my base metal systems - something seems to have broken way back when, with Paul's drivers - between the official release of ArcaOS 5.0.6 (based on old ALSA code) and 5.0.7 (where the UniAud 32 is based on Linux 5.14.7 - release v3.01.02)

PMUnimix shows 9 volume sections, but no sound is generated - trying to correct that problem at the moment as it appears in all versions of Pauls 5.x series UniAud drivers since.

Those traps I saw were related solely to the old 3.2.102 release Paul wanted me to test - I since have narrowed down that problem to later specific Linux Kernal 3.x versions, so not affecting Paul's Current releases.

Testing a reversion that he just did to 3.9.11, to see if it solves the problem.

Best and have a great week!
