Sorry about the trap with 3.17 - I'll admit to not testing it locally. I suspect I know what to backport from 3.18.x to fix it.

Hi Paul,

...What about http://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-3.17.8-20200824.zip ?...

Oh yeah...now we're cooking with gas!!! lol

Yes sir, no trap, appears to be a clean boot (no warnings, etc.), the WPS comes up fine, sound playback is fine (object moves, as well as PM123 and mplayer). Did not test anything else though.

LOG output from the DEBUG driver is attached.

Thanks!
-Dariusz

Hi Paul

uniaud32-linux-3.17.8-20200824.zip (Release) seems to be working fine - limited testing to date.

Interesting that "back porting" a chunk of code from 3.18.x fixes this build as 3.18.x hangs system when startup sound should play.

I found a few minutes to test this on my Asus A88XM-A machine. No sound.

I attached a photo of the old UniAud (from ArcaOS 5.0.5, which works). It shows the Detected mixer, while the new one shows blank after the colon.

I'm trying the updated Uniaud32 builds on a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720s, which is a current model. There is an error message at boot time that goes by too quickly to read. No sound, and unimix says there are no cards.

I tried uniaud32-linux-4.0.9-20200816 and uniaud32-linux-3.17.8-20200824

I am guessing from the PCI output that this is Intel High Definition Audio. 8086:A348

The page listed below says that the support is found in Linux kernels: 3.15–3.19, 4.0–4.20, 5.0–5.8, 5.9-rc+HEAD

https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SND_HDA_INTEL.html

I am attaching a testlog uniaud in the hope that there is something useful logged.

Hi Neil

It is possible to pause boot and read the message; simply add this line after the uniaud lines in config.sys:-

DEVICE=C:\PAUSEIT.SYS

The above causes boot to stop and display a message that the "driver cannot be found, press a key to continue...".

I'll take a look when I get an opportunity. Not all HDA 'backends' are currently enabled - potentially this machine has one of the one's that isn't enabled....

8086:A348 looks like the correct pci id.  The bad news is that this chipset is too new for linux 4.1. That link is misleading - many of those chipsets have only been added to newer kernels.

8086:a348 appears in the linux 4.19.143 code, but not the 4.9.219 code - so seems it was added somewhere between linux 4.9 and 4.19.

It's non-trivial just to add the pci-ids to the current code - it will have to wait until I can spend some more time on this and get the linux code updated to a newer kernel...

Edit: 4.11 is the first time I see the a348 pci id..

OK I'm kinda stuck trying to get 4.1 to produce sound, so I've decided to try applying the 4.0.9 patches to the 4.4.x source code. Will see how I go....

4.4.238 code is compiling - with a bunch of warnings (some of which will need to be actioned) - and 124 missing symbols - down from 150+ this morning ;)

Down to 5 missing symbols...

OK I got it to link - the final missing symbol was a hack, but it will do for now.

Current status is that AC97 hardware boots (at least my virtualbox system does), but HDA traps (on virtualbox).

I'm currently investigating the HDA traps, but if anyone has AC97 hardware and wants to help confirm the core at least works, feel free to try http://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-4.4.238-20201018.zip

Again: this code traps on Virtualbox with HDA hardware and a Sigmatel mixer.

Cheers,

Paul

Sorry to report my laptop trapped with the new driver.
