OK I read on the weekend that the new LTS kernel will be 5.10.x...

Therefore my OCD wants us to be on the current LTS kernel....

Here's step 1 on the pathway from 5.4.x to 5.10.x

Debug only at this stage.... https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.5.19-20210104-debug.zip

Seems to work the same as 5.4.x in my limited testing with HDA in Virtualbox

Both ArcaOs and Windows sound continues to work as it should with this latest release.

No need to test all builds - I sugggest starting with the latest - if it works - no need to test the previous ones. If it doesn't work, finding the newest build that works is helpful.

These have only been confirmed to boot with HDA hardware under Virtualbox. Virtualbox is not giving me sound right now (even under my normal VM with a working driver).

I'll try test on real hardware shortly....

I just did a quick test with "uniaud32-linux-5.8.18-20210104-debug.zip" on the ArcaOS 5.0.6 VM on W10 host on the TP Yoga 14.
No Trap. It produce sound, and I have control of the volume with the master volume tool. Working good.

Hi Paul,

5.10.4. works very well here with the Yoga.

Still 3 controls, not more.

All the best!

Hi Eugene,

Boots with no traps but no sound.

Have you checked mixer controls with pmunimix?

Logs please - 'copy alsahlp$ alsa.log' and 'unimix -list > unimixlist.txt'

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul, everyone...

No need to test all builds - I sugggest starting with the latest - if it works - no need to test the previous ones. If it doesn't work, finding the newest build that works is helpful...

This last one also produces the same result as several of the most recent releases, namely: hard lock during boot, but no TRAP.

I took a stab at playing with numerous config options, just in case something about my system is off (given that no one else is reporting anything similar to this).

I did the following:

1) moved from os2krnl 202 to 201
2) changed VIRTUALADDRESSLIMIT=3072 to 2048
3) changes JFS cache from 256M to 128M

All of these produced the very same result.

I will try a couple more times with several other changes such as shutting off FAT32 IFS, disabling the VirtualBox driver, etc.

Thanks,
-Dariusz

Weird.... do you access to a serial port and null modem cable at all? It would be interesting to see how far the boot gets.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

Hi Dariusz,

Weird.... do you access to a serial port and null modem cable at all? It would be interesting to see how far the boot gets.

Yup, I've got my APC UPS hooked up to it normally, but could troubleshoot this specific issue otherwise. The NULL cable is the bigger problem...got a few regular cables here, so maybe I could re-wire? I see plenty of on-line references that show the null vs normal pin mapping. Would this require a basic Rx=>Tx and Tx=>Rx conversion, or will this setup need any handshaking provisions?

Do we need to be running a debug kernel for this?

OK 1st things - from what I can see - you're the only user with an ATI SB - everyone else seems to have HDA Intel... so that's likely a different code path.

From what I can see - 4.19.x works for you, 5.3.x fails.  Are you able to narrow down which build broke things for you? this will help identify code changes which caused the break.

To be honest, I'm not 100% it needs to be a null-model serial cable - I just capture the serial port in virtualbox and it works. To send log messages to serial, add /P:1 for com1 or /P:2 for com2

Cheers,

Paul

Yup, the last good one was: uniaud32-linux-4.19.163-20201230c.zip, following that they were either a TRAP 000e, or the hard-lock. See the attached testing matrix.

For what it's worth, there were two other earlier releases that did actually show the same behaviour, they were:

1) uniaud32-linux-3.18.140-20200816.zip
2) uniaud32-linux-4.0.9-20200816.zip

To be honest, I'm not 100% it needs to be a null-model serial cable - I just capture the serial port in virtualbox and it works. To send log messages to serial, add /P:1 for com1 or /P:2 for com2

OK, may not be as hard then...let me see if I can just hook this thing up to one of my laptops, they are older machines so should have a serial port on one of them...

Thanks!
