Hi Mark, I think the audio adapters on video cards might be mostly for DRMed content, things like playing a bluray or DRMed streaming like Netflix. They don't want you tapping into the audio (or visual) stream and saving it like you could do with a regular audio adapter. So the audio driver would be part of the video driver for that card on platforms that are supported.

Hey All,

It's been a while between drinks, but I updated uniaud32 to the 5.15 kernel. I first looked at this almost a year ago, and got lost in trying to implement the missing kernel functionality.

I took a slightly different approach this time, and got a compiled binary, that seems to work in virtualbox. I'll try see if my real hardware works as well over the weekend.

Link is https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15-20220805.zip

Next steps will be to get to the current 5.15.x LTS build (5.15.59 at the time of writing)

The 5.15 kernel is a Long Term Support kernel, that has a projected end of life date of October 2023.

Cheers,

Paul

 Hey Paul,

Wow... thanks for this! It is working fine here so far:

[C:\]unimix -card
Command line mixer for UNIAUD32. Version 1.1
Detected UNIAUD version 3.01.01
Detected 1 audio adapter(s)
Card info for adapter 0:
  num: 0
  id: PCH
  driver: HDA-Intel
  name: HDA Intel PCH
longname: HDA Intel PCH at 0xf7220000 irq 16
  mixer: Realtek ALC887-VD
  componenets: HDA:10ec0887,1458a182,00100302 HDA:8086280b,80860101,00100000

 I'll attach alsahlp$ too.

Paul,

Not getting any sound out of this one, but it seems to be loading:

[C:\]unimix -card
Command line mixer for UNIAUD32. Version 1.1
Detected UNIAUD version 3.01.01
Detected 1 audio adapter(s)
Card info for adapter 0:

  componenets: HDA:10ec0887,1458a182,00100302 HDA:8086280b,80860101,00100000

I'll upload alsahlp$ using the debug version...

Thanks Dave, I'll try and investigate over the weekend. I'm also getting a trap with AC97 hardware in VirtualBox.

Hi Paul,

Updated to 5.15.59 - https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.59-20220805.zip

Similar to David's experience, I am not getting no SOUND with the 5.15.59 release...HOWEVER, the 5.15 kernel update does work quite fine and unless it's my ears playing tricks on me, the sound seems to have higher quality??? ugh...???

Seriously...fired up PM123 and went through some of my music (eg Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight", 251 kb/s VBR, 44.1 kHz, Joint-Stereo) and it literally kicks ass!!!

Thank you!

Hi Paul

Updated to 5.15.59 - https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.59-20220805.zip

Loads fine but no startup sound.

Settings all look good.

Tried playing Klondike Solitaire but game does not appear onscreen- definitely related to this uniaud update as works fine otherwise.

Also tried Makman/2 which made it to screen and then locked the system requiring a reboot - also related to this uniaud update.

Will have to give uniaud32-linux-5.15-20220805.zip a try later.

Regards

Pete

https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.59-20220806.zip might fix the lack of audio...

Or it might not based on my testing in Virtualbox... For those that have no sound with HDA hardware in 5.15.59, does your alsa.log end with something like:
Code: [Select]
channels: 2, period size: b00
channels selected: 2
HWP: SR rate 44100, BPS 16, CH 2, PRSZ 2c0, periods 16
Period size min=2c0 max=2c0
Error -125548448 second time.. Bailing
Unknown error 125548448
U16: StartStream: ConfigDev failed!!

Yep...
Code: [Select]
channels: 2, period size: b00
channels selected: 2
HWP: SR rate 44100, BPS 16, CH 2, PRSZ 2c0, periods 16
Period size min=2c0 max=2c0

Unknown error 123398048
U16: StartStream: ConfigDev failed!!

<sigh> I'll likely end up merging 5.15.20 or so and see if that works, then 5.15.40 and try and isolate the breaking change....

5.15.20 - alsa.log looks OK in Virtualbox - I'm not getting sound, but that's not unusual here when virtualised...
https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.20-20220807.zip

NB: non-HDA hardware will probably still trap with this build - will try investigate that today.

5.15.40 shows the same issue as 5.15.59. Some tweaks appear to resolve the issue...

https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.59-20220807b.zip hacks around the issues causing traps with non-HDA hardware (tested with AC97 on Virtualbox).
