Heh Paul!

Hope your having a fine day.

So have you been looking around for another companion to replace loyal Hudson? A tough time without your friend of many years, but I'm sure walks in that lovely scenery of yours go better with another loyal dog around ......... !

Hye Mark,

However, I was unable to get any sound on the other system (HYPERFIRE) which has an F1- A75V Motherboard equipped with an ALC892 8 channel HDA chipset, using the March releases of UniAud32. On that system, the chipset (Adapter 0) generates no sound but PMUnimix v0.8.2 reports all 9 normal volume sections - putting sound volumes to the max produces no sound. Sound is generated using the UniAud32 version that comes with the ArcaOS package. Tested both the release and debug versions at the time.

Are you able to generate a testlog for this system using http://88watts.net/dlfile.php?F=testlog- ? It's quite possible there is a specific 'fix' for this hardware that is currently in code that is commented out (long story, the short version is that openwatcom is old).

Best if you can open a ticket for the hardware at https://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud to save me having to trawl through the forum to find logs.

Cheers,

Paul.

Sorry for not replying back until today, Sir - was called back to emergency service for a couple of weeks, then trying to catch up on my outside property work - never a dull moment in this Year of Strange.

I saw your latest posts and downloaded the UniAud32 20220903 package and installed it on the two systems I mentioned previously, to test as you requested,

On Manticore II, which has the ADI AD1988B HDA chipset on the motherboard again no problems at all - PMUniMix reports 11 volume control sections, and preliminary testing with PM123 played perfectly.

On Hyperfire, the system I was having problems with, (On-board ALC892 HDA chipset) again no sound but 10 volume sections are reported by PMUniMix (just noted the missing section is CD Playback Volume, which is reported on Manticore II). I tried the release version first, then replaced it with the debug version - no difference.

I generated a new testlog, which is attached below - it was generated with the debug version of your 20220903 test driver - if you want I can still open a ticket on https://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud - didn't do it previously as I was rushing out the door the day you sent the reply - forest fires wait for no one <sic>.

I haven't got around to testing the Soundblaster cards installed on the two systems, but still plan to try them, when I get a free hour or so, somewhere.

Best as always !

Hi Mauro

Hi Mauro!

Back in March, after going through 46 pages of posts, I put together a Testing Guide for my own use, as a quick reference source.

I spruced it up a bit today and have attached it below - hope you will find it of some use.

If anyone has any comments related to the guide, let me know and I will update it.

Best!

Mark

Thank to you as well Mark,  very useful job

Posting to Paul at the moment, I realized that I did not update the Testing Guide to v1.1 at the beginning of August, after a very convoluted month.

Attached is the updated version (v1.1) which corrects a few things, as well as adding references to the latest TestLog (v3.5.0), its links, and references to opening a TRAC ticket, to NetLabs.org, if you want to report a problem with Paul's version of the drivers.

Hi Dave,
Hi Paul,

I gave these new builds a try, 20220904b gives me a TrapE on boot. 20220903 and 20220904 both seem to work at first, but I lose sound altogether within a few minutes of booting. Haven't determined what might be causing that though. My sound card:

[C:\]unimix -card
Command line mixer for UNIAUD32. Version 1.1
Detected UNIAUD version 3.01.04
Detected 1 audio adapter(s)
Card info for adapter 0:
  num: 0
  id: PCH
  driver: HDA-Intel
  name: HDA Intel PCH
longname: HDA Intel PCH at 0xf7220000 irq 16
  mixer: Realtek ALC887-VD
  componenets: HDA:10ec0887,1458a182,00100302 HDA:8086280b,80860101,00100000

Regards,

Can you create a 'testlog uniaud' with 0904, then post the trapscreen from 0904b?

The only change in 0904b is http://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/changeset/723 which should have been pretty safe, and doesn't trap in VirtualBox or on a T470s.

Interesting stuff!

Cheers,

Paul

OK... while the original report was using the 'release' version, these reports are using the 'debug' version.

Hey all,

Updated the source to 5.15.65 - nothing major in this, but a few updates to cirrus, connexant, realtek HDA code and to the core code.

@David - I'm still pondering your trap - I don't expect this to help...

Hi Paul

Again, I tested it (Release version) with ArcaOS 5.0.7 VM guest on VBox 6.1.36 (Windows 10 21H2 host).
- VM ICH AC97: Works, Audio control working, no traps.
- VM Intel HD Audio: Works, Audio control working, no traps.

I just noticed that with "ICH AC97" the audio on the VM sounds louder than with "Intel HD Audio". I'm not sure if always worked that way, and I just noticed now.

Hey all,

Updated the source to 5.15.65 - nothing major in this, but a few updates to cirrus, connexant, realtek HDA code and to the core code.

@David - I'm still pondering your trap - I don't expect this to help...

https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.65-20220905.zip

Cheers,

Up to this one, I have had no issues, however, I get a trap e with this one on boot (warm or cold).
Back to the original uniaud to boot, unimix shows this about the card:
Card info for adapter 0:
  num: 0
  id: PCH
  driver: HDA-Intel
  name: HDA Intel PCH
longname: HDA Intel PCH at 0xf2530000 irq 22
  mixer: Realtek ALC269VC
  componenets: HDA:10ec0269,17aa2204,00100203

I can put the trapping uniaud32.sys back in and get more trap info (or a dump) but I will probably have to hand write the data as the trap superimposed over the previous boot messages such that I do not think a picture would be very clear.

Hi Paul!

Rainy day today, the first in about a month, so had some time for more testing

Hey all,

Updated the source to 5.15.65 - nothing major in this, but a few updates to cirrus, connexant, realtek HDA code and to the core code.

@David - I'm still pondering your trap - I don't expect this to help...

https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-5.15.65-20220905.zip

Cheers,

Paul

Tried your 5.15.65 release on both systems:

On Manticore II, with the AD1988B chipset, again things working perfectly

However, on Hyperfire, with the ALC892 chipset, I seem to get Davids Trap000e (attached the JPG below)

I've tested both the Release and the Debug versions of 5.15.65, and get the same trap and result (or at least the results look the same - some slight differences in the various sections reported).

However, reverting to the 5.15.59 version from 20220903 I still get no sound - but PMUnimix reports 10 volume sections as per my previous post.

So something is happening in 5.15.65, but not on everything - just thought you'd like to know that the trap is reproducible, in this case in 5.15.65, even though its on an HDA system that is not working (ie. no sound produced) - perhaps its the HDA code you added for cirrus, connexant, and realtek that caused the break this time, at least for me (probably not the core code, as the AD1988B HDA chipset is still working perfectly).

Yet more of a puzzler if your not puzzled out already, Paul, and Best!

Errr, that's the other computer.
Tried your 5.15.6 as i've got conextant hardware and can also see a trap here during boot.
Reverted back to 3.01.01 that work with the hardware.

Heh Jan-Erik!

NTried your 5.15.6 as i've got ALC888 hardware (Conexant) and can also see a trap here during boot.
Reverted back to 5.10.7 that work with the hardware.
//Jan-Erik

As my ALC892 chipset is obviously also Conexant, I don't recall if I tried that version of Paul's driver - has you had any issues with 5.10.7 at all and Best!

Hello Mark,

Sorry, I mixed the two up, Conexant is present on the Sony Vaio Laptop.

But my guess is that I'll meet the same issue you have with ALC892 as mine is ALC888 on an AMD Quad Core machine.

I think that 3.01.01 was the last one that's ok as newer versions I've tried tend to be a bit sluggish/slow so they can stall/freeze if one use mplayer and jump in short intervals. I skip uninteresting parts of movies/clips.  :)

Heh Jan-Erik!

For those with traps with 0904b and/or 0905 can you please confirm 0904 works? The key change from 0904 to 0904b was the change in kzalloc so I'll look to revert that change this evening, but some more data would be useful.

I had missed 0904b, it too does trap.  0904 does not trap.

Thanks Andy, I'll revert the kzalloc change this evening my time and provide a new build.
