Heh Paul!

Interesting.... there's nothing obvious in that log as to why it's not working :(

Had a wild non common sense idea today, which I didn't think would hurt anything and thought it might help.

As I said, on these two bare metal machines I have two partitions each - one working and one test.

On HYPERFIRE the ALC892 chipset on the working partition works in producing sound - I had a look and the UniAud version in use there is dated 2020-07-05, so packaged with ArcaOS 5.0.6 - I reverted the test partition to that level and it worked fine, albeit some clipping of system sound and on PM123. 8 sound sections reported by PMUnimix.

Attached below is a testlog of the working ALC892 version dated today - I have no idea if it would be of any use, but being a crazy person (you have to be working in the emergency business for 42 years), I thought I'd forward it to you anyway - if its of no use, for whatever reason nothing lost or gained. Just being thorough as a Beta Tester.

I also tried to do the same, using the SB X-Fi and the /a:2 switch - no sound was generated and PMUnimix generated neither an INI file nor a debug.txt, although, generating a Testlog, it seems to have been seen and reported there. I don't know when the switches were implemented in the Linux version you ported, so again nothing ventured nothing gained.

But thought I'd try it anyway since I had an hour or so, and Best!

Hey Mark!

Funny - I'd had the thought to ask you if any previous versions of Uniaud produced sound with your ALC892 machine and kept forgetting to ask you.

It would be helpful (if you have time) to try and identify which build first broke support. Rather than trawling through this thread, I can send you a consolidated list of builds that are sitting on my webserver. That might help narrow down the specific change that broke things.

re: the creative card and the stock ArcaOS driver - it was relatively recent that I added in the patch_ca0110.c and patch_ca0132.c into the driver - so older drivers would have no chance of supporting this hardware.

Cheers,

Paul.

The list would be useful - do you recall which ArcaOS build came with 5.0.7? - I seem to recall that the sound broke with that build (which is the reason I'm using 5.0.6's version, I think). I used the update process with a USB stick to install 5.0.7, so I don't think I have access to that build, but I can check my archives, if I know the date of the files.

If you have it and can provide that build of UniAud32, I can test it tomorrow,

Best!

Hey Mark,

No idea which build came with 5.0.7, but your testlog shows:
1.0.24:::06::SVN609

This means the 'working' build is based on ALSA 1.0.24 - circa 2010!

Let me generate a list of builds tonight.

Paul.

I'd start about halfway through the list and see if it works, if it doesn't - divide the remaining list in half and try that one, etc

Heh Paul!

Hey Mark,

No idea which build came with 5.0.7, but your testlog shows:
1.0.24:::06::SVN609

This means the 'working' build is based on ALSA 1.0.24 - circa 2010!

Let me generate a list of builds tonight.

Cheers,

Paul.

I'm a packrat when it comes to files and have local archives for a lot of things, including the various ArcaOS versions generated so far.

My recollection was indeed correct - there was an upgrade to the UniAud files in 5.0.7, and yes indeed I did revert to the 5.0.6 UniAud32, because no sound was produced.

Dave was mostly correct - the version included was 3.01.03 not .02:

According to the Testlog generated today:

Revision:        3.01.03
Date/Time:       23 Oct 2021 12:39:40
Build Machine:   DAZAR1
ASD Feature ID:  5.14.7
FixPak Version:  SVN707
File Version:    3.1.3
Description:     Universal Audio Driver for OS/2 (c) 2021 D Azarewicz

The UniAud32 files report as being dated 2021-12-7 in the 5.0.7 archive. And if I'm reading the above correctly the files were based on UniAud 5.14.7 (Don't know if David is also using the Linux sources, but I would assume so).

Testlog from today attached below.

We're going out for dinner today, so I don't know whether I will get around to too much testing, Paul - Some of your files precede that version, so perhaps I should test them.

I also have a number of UniAud versions that were generated as official upgrades as Warpin files, if I need to go further back - the problem there is I don't know how you deconstruct a .WPI file to extract the files contain therein, for testing - any suggestions if I need to go that far?

A useful tool for investigating and extracting files from WPI packages is WPIView which you should find here ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/vxapps/wpiview/wpiview110.zip

Well that was quick, Gents

As Davids 3.01.03 build didn't work, based on v5.14.7 (if I'm reading that right), I decided to go right back to the first files in your directory, Paul, also based on v5 - I downloaded your 3.0 and 3.1 debugs and releases, and installed each one - unless there is some other variable I'm missing, no sound seems to be generated from any of the 5.x series on the ALC892 chipset.

Still shows the 9 PMUnimix volume sections that the ALSA 1.0.24 based v2.01.02 shows, but there is no sound present in any of the four tests I did this morning.

I also checked what upgrades ArcaOS put out, in WarpIn format, in the interim - they use the file version described in Testlog as the identifier, and the latest versions present in WarpIn are 2.2.6 (the 2.01.02 version from 5.0.6) and 3.1.3 (version 3.01.03).

So by process of elimination, anything that remains must be obvious, to misquote the great sleuth - the ALSA 1.0.24 build must be the last version that worked - hence the testlog I provided from yesterday.

And brooding on it a bit last night over a glass of Hennessy Cognac on a beautiful mid fall summer night on the deck, I suspect its something extremely small, given everything is working, except the sound itself - I guess my question would be was there a wholesale rewrite of UniAud, as things jumped from Alsa v1 to Linux v5?

Actually I do have it, but never have used it - so many files so little time <sic>

Now I don't think I'll need it, but will peg it to Tab LaunchPad - the update files are the same as what I installed - one works, albeit with sound clipping, while the other does not work at all.

Have a fine day Sir and Best!

Brief history lesson if I may....

In the early days of ALSA, it was maintained as a separate source repository outside of the linux kernel. This is back in the days when Uniaud was first created. ALSA 1.0.25 was the final release as a standalone project. The Uniaud in ArcaOS 5.0.24 (the v2 series) was based on ALSA code.

Around the time of the release of the linux kernel 3.0; the ALSA code was incorporated into the kernel, and wasn't available as a separate download.

The list of builds I posted (including the 3.0 release) are based on the corresponding sound code from the linux kernel. So (for example) the uniaud32-linux-3.0.zip was based on the 'linux 3.0' kernel.

So if this is the build that broke things for you, something changed between the ALSA 1.0.24 code; and the sound code from the 3.0 kernel release. This certainly should help narrow things down :)

Edit: the 3.0 code didn't make it in to SVN, but the breaking change for Mark's ALC892 should be somewhere in https://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/changeset/612 :)

Edit2: @Mark - can you please generate a log with the debug driver from https://smedley.id.au/tmp/uniaud32-linux-3.2.102.zip ? I don't expect it to produce audio - but it will give me a log that corresponds with https://trac.netlabs.org/uniaud/changeset/612

Cheers,

Paul

Thanks for the history lesson - it gives me a better perspective as to how this all evolved, framework wise. When your not part of the development, everything in the black box is a mystery to the user.

As a troubleshooter, its why I've found Beta Testing a fascinating experience. Paul - I've learned a lot about whats under the hood in this OS, and how its all interrelated. And tracing and correcting problems is what I've spent a lifetime doing

It seems a lot of things got fed into the maul of the linux kernel - the other project I've been working on here, on hiatus at the moment (joystick/gamepad support) also seems to be linked directly to the linux kernel in many ways.

As to generating a testlog .............

Downloading and trying 3.2.102 debug - first of all it was a memory hog - had to disable a couple of optional device drivers in CONFIG.SYS to proceed, only to trap 000e in the kernel. Loading the release version got an internal processing error in the current kernel installed - 14.203 SMP.

I noted that you also had a version labelled 3.2.102 MikeK (three versions in fact: MikeK - MikeK3), so I downloaded K3 as a further test and installed it - I assume that was also a debug version as I got the same trap 000e.

So I suspect there are memory usage problems involved with that version of UniAud and my base metal system HYPERFIRE - also don't know what kernel you were testing it on there - I'm loath to revert kernel wise, if that may be needed, even on a test partition, in case thing go wacky.

Do you think installing 3.2 debug would tell you anything? I don't know if that will even load, and I assume that that version preceded 3.2.102 so you may not have committed the changes in the change log. Your next version after that is 3.5.

Best!

Hey Mark,

Interesting... it's been way too long, but I don't recall others reporting traps in 3.2.102 - otherwise, I doubt I would have checked the code in to SVN... anyways...

Any working version around 3.2 would be useful...

even:
uniaud32-linux-3.0-debug.zip
uniaud32-linux-3.1.zip
uniaud32-linux-3.1.9.zip
uniaud32-linux-3.2-debug.zip

The original linux source is available for these, so they're still possibly helpful in identifying an additional (or mission) log entry which might give clues...

Edit: I also wonder if removing the PCIe sound cards makes any difference...

Cheers,

Paul
