COBOL revived
« on: April 07, 2020, 01:28:35 pm »
Source: [https://www.tomshardware.com/news/new-jersey-cobol-coders-mainframes-coronavirus]

The state of New Jersey is looking for YOU, if you are a COBOL programmer. Due to the enormous rise in unemployment numbers (1.600%) they need to make changes to COBOL code powering their " 40-Year-Old Mainframes".

I knew the years in COBOL education would pay off one day! - Oh wait.. it's for volunteers only.. mhmm... ; )

Hi

Rumor has it that a lot of COBOL programmers were cryogenically frozen to solve the Y10K future problem.  ;D ;D

Hi

COBOL was the 3rd language that I learnt but have not used it since... err... 1991-ish. I probably would not be much use to New Jersey especially as I used to work on ICL mainframes running VME, never used an IBM mainframe in my life :-)

And, of course, travel restrictions would probably prevent me leaving the UK even if I was interested.

Regards

Pete

Pete, you never know, you just might be able to dial into that mainframe in New Jersey to help them out.  Time to dust off the old 300 baud Hayes!
