Question about a sound card and GPU
rlittl01:
Hi,
I have a Thinkstation S20. That I want to use with ArcaOS. I will be buying a Sound Blaster Live! sound card and a Envy24 Maudio 2496 card. Currently the GPU is powered by a nvidia gts 250. I'm wondering if all of this hardware shouldn't be a problem. I know for sure the on board audio work. As i saw a similar spec hardware. That had onboard audio working. In the hardware tested section. I also have a spare dell 4800 with ide. For a drop in placement. Looking to run Arca on this beefy xeon.
Neil Waldhauer:
I expect the video would be faster if you remove the NVidia adapter.
Dave Yeo:
NVidia isn't really supported, crappy VBE implementation and can't patch the BIOS to support wide screen monitors. ATI and Intel work the best currently. Remember we currently don't have any modern video drivers and when we do get them, Intel will likely be first.
rlittl01:
Okay! What about more modern radeon gpu's? Even though I have a agp x1200. I have for my s20 a 6450 radeon. And a couple of 7000 series radeons. Would that suffice? The intel graphics sound nice. I have a couple of intel GMA boards laying around 8)
Dave Yeo:
Generally ATI and Intel are supported. Note that you're still using the VBE driver so not much acceleration, no 3D but on modern hardware still fairly fast.
