[SOLVED] TiMidity++ error on WPS (Ksoftseq - sound loop)
« on: April 19, 2021, 10:23:29 pm »
Hi

I installed TiMidity++ 2.13.3 R3 on my ArcaOS 5.0.6 VM.  (Timidy++ and eawparts)

1) I'm not sure if it is TiMidity++ player v2.13.2 R3, or version 2.13.3 R3, since the WarpIn installer says that.

2) I'm experiencing an issue with WPS. If I open the folder in the desktop that contains the MID files, the WPS crashes and restart intermediately.

If I run the MID files from the command line like "play FILE=sonataa.MID" it reproduces the sound. I guess this mean that this version of TIMIDITY++ is now integrated to MMOS2, right?  (that would be awesome for some games that uses MID files that I want to test)

3) The MMOS2 app, "Midi Player" hangs when I try to open the MIDI file.

I would appreciate if someone else can try it out and see if it is an issue on my VM.

Regards

It works much the same as all previous versions here. Have to use its menu to open midi files, which it plays fine. Drag'n'drop doesn't seem to work and double clicking a midi file or doing "play file=cartoon.midi" also does nothing.
Note I'm using midi files I installed long ago, not the system ones.

Hi

I will have to double check. Maybe I have some extra CODEC installed on the VM that I didn't remember to install before. I think I remember some utility on hobbes that tells you which MMOS2 things you had installed... or I will test a blank VM.

Maybe this Timidity++ still don't have the MMOS2 MIDI integration I dream about.

Hi

I confirm that the issue is my VM. I tried a clean VM, installed Timidity++ and there is no MMOS2 integration. I guess that on my other VM had some Timidity MCD installed (that's why PLAY was working) and I didn't remember.   :(

You installed TimidityMCD as a test (when you helped me on improving USBAUDIO.SYS). Maybe you never properly deinstalled it.
TimidityMCD is broken and will lead to all sorts of WPS misbehaviour.

As you already found out, Timidity++ does not integrate into anything. It is just a standalone application.

Yes Lars. I got exited thinking that this was a Timidity++ release with MMOS2 components, but nope, it was that I forgot that I installed Timidity MCD on that VM.

Hey Martin,

In case you didn't know, Ko Myung-Hun has made an MMOS/2 MIDI player called 'Ksoftseq' that uses Soundfonts and Fluidsynth. Available on Hobbes. It works great here - you can double click a MIDI file and it plays. You need the latest Fluidsynth, the latest Kai and kmididec as well as ksoftseq (all on Hobbes). Also need at least one soundfont (named as ksoftseq.sf2 in C:\MMOS2), but there are tons of them out there and fluidsynth comes with one. There is even eawpats.sf2 if you want to keep the Timidity sound.

Thanks David. I will try it out.

But my main issue is that are applications (some old games) that reproduces MIDI files by going through the MMOS2 component, so having a MIDI codec on MMOS2 will be the best thing to experience those old games with MIDI sound.

 Hi Martin,

That's what I mean... it uses a MIDI codec*. You double click a MIDI file and it plays just like a WAV file. A new tab is added to the Multimedia setup app too...

Regards,

*EDIT: technically not a CODEC, but an IOProc.

Hi David.

I'm trying to configure "'Ksoftseq". I installed it on a fresh ArcaOS 5.0.6 VM.
I followed:
- yum install libkai
- yum install fluidsynth
- Installed kmididec (manually) - https://github.com/komh/kmididec/releases
- Installed - Ksoftseq (with minstall) - https://github.com/komh/ksoftseq/releases

I rebooted and it seems that something on the MMOS2 broke, because the startup sound keep looping the last part.
Mid files are not working by double clicking it.

I recorded a quick video with the phone: https://youtu.be/BhP1QGBHEQE

Now I have to know how to uninstall "Ksoftseq" to see it I get it back and keep trying.

Hi

I tried to uninstall "Ksoftseq" with minstall, by unselecting it, but it did not work.
I later removed the ksoftseq.dll file from MMOS2/DLL, but on the next reboot I still have the sound loop.

I can easily wipe the VM and start over, but I would like to experiment if there is a way to fix this issue. Suggestions are welcome.

 Hi Martin,

Unfortunately, I have no experience with OS/2 VM's, so can't help with the looping sound - maybe try a different sound device or driver? I know AN put out a fix for that years ago (should be included with ArcaOS) and I have not had it since on bare metal.

Make sure you install version 2.0.0 of libkai and at least version 2.1.5 of fluidsynth. Version 2 of libkai is still on the netlabs-exp repository.

You also need to install a sound font named 'ksoftseq.sf2' in the C:\MMOS2 folder. Fluidsynth installs one in C:\usr\share\sounds\sf2 - you could copy that one into the c:\MMOS2 folder and name it 'ksoftseq.sf2'. Or, you can search the net for 'eawpats.sf2' and use that if you prefer the Timidity sound (renamed ksoftseq.sf2 of course).

Check in the Multimedia Setup folder for a tab called 'K Soft Sequencer'. Make sure it is the default MIDI device (or only one). This will verify it really was installed.

 Regards,

Hi David

I confirm I got the 2.0.0 version of libkai and version 2.1.5 of fluidsynth from netlabs.exp.
But I don't find any thing on C:\usr\share\sounds\sf2. I don't have that directory. Maybe I'm missing some packages for fluidsynth.

I run a:
 yum whatprovides */ksoftseq.sf2
and no matches found.

 Hi Martin,

The fluidsynth soundfont is called 'FluidR3_GM.sf2'. You have to rename it to 'ksoftseq.sf2' when you copy it to C:\MMOS2. I can't imagine what else might have installed it on my machine other than Fluidsynth... If you just can't find it, get 'eawpats.sf2' from the internet and use that. Any soundfont will do.

Hi David.

I did not find any .sf2 on the /usr. But I found some generic .sf2 files around. The good thing is that now MIDI file sounds with a double click (WPSPlay).  So it works.
But the bad part is that after any sound file stops playing (MIDI or WAV), I still get the sound loop.

The good side is that I got it how to configure "Ksoftseq"
