Hi

Where do you think it should go "vCompat" (enhanced compatability for OS/2 VDM sessions) ? It is right now on "/pub/os2/util/system".
Should it remain there? or there is a better suggestion.

It is like I'm missing on hobbes something for the DOS-VDM system things like creating a "/pub/os2/system/DOSVDM", but I'm not complete sure about it, and if there are other files for that category.

I normally poke DOS stuff for OS/2 in a directory \MDOS under the OS2 files.  This is a sample of what's there.  These particularly work the DOS/OS2 interface.

2gbfix, denynone, dos5iso, doscall, dstart, dualdosc, endvdm, keydos, mscdex22, os2exec, pipdos11, run110, vcdr090

Code: [Select]

Volume in drive L is l-tera02     Serial number is 7e1c:4e6c
 Directory of  L:\newapps\os2\mdos\*

[.]                [..]               [deu]              [files]
[treibe]           2gbfix.zip         bio.btm            bootdisk.bat
changdos.zip       ctl3dxx.zip        d014103.zip        denynone.exe
dos5iso.zip        dosbox_small.exe   doscall.zip        dosrx10b.zip
dstart.zip         dualdosc.zip       dynalink.zip       econfig.zip
endvdm.zip         extdisk.zip        fdisk.zip          FINDDOS.ZIP
FINDER.ZIP         ibmbasica340.txt   ibmbasica340.zip   KEYDOS.ZIP
lniview.zip        mscdex2.zip        mscdex22.zip       NEWSTRG.ZIP
os2exec.zip        OS2HDD2.ZIP        os2hddfx.zip       pcdv.exe
pipdos11.zip       run110.zip         sfrename.zip       so100.zip
srun.zip           startd.zip         STARTDOS.ZIP       STRTDM.ZIP
syspart.zip        tktos2.zip         tntfxos2.zip       treeview.zip
unstuf.zip         vcdr090b.zip       vCDROMv090b.zip    vcompatv032b.zip
VDMAv09b.zip       VIEWHLP1.ZIP
4,949,865 bytes in 49 files and 5 dirs    5,070,848 bytes allocated
      84,076,138,496 bytes free

Most of this is for running under DOS, or DOS under OS/2 or DOS with OS/2.  pcdv.exe is the reduced version of the PCDOS help system, as a standalone viewer.

I know that this can be argued forever but I would NOT put "VCompat" under /pub/dos.

"VCompat" is a 32-bit OS/2 VDD (virtual device driver). It CANNOT be loaded by the DOS operating system. The same holds true for "VSound" and "VDMA" (from the same author and in the same directory as "vcompat").

"2GBFix" on the other hand is a DOS TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program that can be executed under a real DOS or inside an OS/2 VDM.

What might be reasonable is to have a new subdir "/pub/os2/system/drivers/vdd" to place these kind of drivers.

By the way: the "2GBFix" functionality is included in "VCompat". In short: it's easier and preferrable to use "VCompat" as it also has many additional DOS fixes.

I suspect /MDOS instead of /VDD.  It's the directory where the stuff ends up in OS/2.

The last "tame" that runs under OS/2 is one you can't register.  You can register later ones that runs under WinNT and Vista.

I know that this can be argued forever but I would NOT put "VCompat" under /pub/dos.
I agree with that, since I also have in my mind that "/pub/dos" is for applications that runs in DOS and also on DOSVDM, not for specifically OS/2 VDM system utilities.

What might be reasonable is to have a new subdir "/pub/os2/system/drivers/vdd" to place these kind of drivers.
I also think that is a good idea. I need to keep thinking about it as I check "/pub/os2/util/system" that seems to crowded.

Since there is "/pub/os2/system/x11", I was thinking we may have "/pub/os2/system/vdm" (Virtual DOS machine) and possible also "/pub/os2/system/win32" for the Odin based libraries (Instead of "/pub/os2/win32os2").

But I'm still in brainstorm since I haven't started updating the "/pub/os2/system/" directory.

Hi

I think that dialers software (to connect to a network) are more an utility than an app.  Currently they are in " /pub/os2/apps/internet/dialer", but maybe I want to move them to "/pub/os2/util/network".

What do you think?

Hi

Where do you think I should put "TIFF_1-0.zip" (TIIF is a replacement for PCIF/PCIFAST from Texas Instruments. Software for the PC-Interface between a TI74/95 poket-calculator and PC.)

Currently it is on "/pub/os2/apps/comm", but I think it should be over "/util" instead. But I'm not sure where to put it, or if a new directory should be create for that kind of utilities. Or maybe this is a good candidate for "/util/misc"? (I also have the "Psion" file there, which is the same category)

Both TIFF and Psion should belong to something like "/pub/os2/util/handheld".

Hi

Happy New Year. I haven't finished organizing "/pub/os2/apps" and "/pub/os2/util" this 2021, but I guess I have 2022 too.
- I still have no idea what to do with "/pub/os2/apps/comm". I'm thinking that many of those are utilities, and I'm also not a BBS guy, never use those.
- Suggestion on where to place the things from "/pub/os2/apps/internet/ppp" and "/pub/os2/apps/internet/uucp" are welcome

I spent some time to write file descriptions.
Here are *.txt files.

ppp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point-to-Point_Protocol
uucp - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UUCP (Unix to Unix copy)

Both come from the modem era and the contained files could just be added to the comm dir.

About the app/util question: I've already written before that I prefer to make no difference between them.

Hi

I finally started with the reorganization of the web browsers. They are now located at: "/pub/os2/apps/webbrowser"

Please take a look and let me know if I'm missing some key version of the web browsers we have for OS/2.
