Password Managers
« on: February 17, 2021, 05:01:52 am »
So I've been using the free edition of LastPass for a while. It works fairly well as a browser extension on both SM and FF with the old extension still supported. It also works well on my Android phone.
They're changing the terms next month so the free edition is only usable on mobile or desktop and I can't afford to pay for it.
So wondering what password managers people are using.

I mostly use SMs integrated password manager and share the profile (copied over from the main machine). I don't need more security on my private machines. On one Win machine I want to have better security I've my SM profile on an encrypted drive (VeraCrypt). Moreover I once exported my passwords and feed it into KeePassX (yum install keepassx). I've the KeePassX database on my main OS/2 box. But I also copied it to a stick together with the Win version of KeePassX so I've access even when I'm on another machine.

Of course keeping the main KeePassX file in sync with the main Seamonkey profile with the copies is additional work. It's manageable as long as I prefer different stable passwords for different accounts, but my method will not easily work if you like to have a lot of constantly changing passwords.

Btw. I don't use mobile devices for any serious tasks where I've a need for secure passwords.

yum install keepassx
That doesn't work for me. Is it in netlabs-exp?

I've found it on eCSoft/2.

I think so. It's listed here as installed. But in red color when exp is disabled.

Hi Thomas

Works good.  Thanks.

Create a directory for it in the Programs folder on your hard drive

Need to download, extract and copy the files to your Programs\eAccounts folder

ftp://cyberia.dnsalias.com/pub/filebase/gfd/app/misc/EACC11.ZIP

Download, extract, and copy EACC12 exe to the eAccount directory replacing the eacc11 exe.

http://www.os2site.com/sw/apps/database/eacc_upto12.zip

Download, extract, and copy blowfish to the eAccount directory.

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/encrypt/bfish163.zip

Run install.cmd

KeePassX sounds good and along with KeePassXC, were recommended to me on other forums as cross platform.
Thanks

Yes, KeePassXC is probably the best and safest one. Local storage only, no browser add-ons, no mobile versions, no telemetry, implemeted 2FA. It was recommended to me a from the data center of our institute a few days ago. I've read that it started as a fork of KeePassX. I'll start with KeePassX on OS/2 in the future.

BTW: KeePassXC uses Qt 5 and has no OS/2 port. KeePassX uses Qt 4 and an OS/2 port exists.

Yes, but with libgcrypt ported (Thanks KOMH), and the Qt 5 port coming along, it should be portable. There's a couple of other requirements, which are likely portable without hassle. The big one is having a cryptographic library with a good source of entropy for password and key generation.

You can also go to my Java pages, there are 4 Java programs which can hold your passwords. Have a look at http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6eB.htm or in Dutch http://joopn.home.xs4all.nl/os2ecs/ecs6nB.htm. Of course you need Java 6. If that is not enough, let me know, there are more out there for Java ;-)
