FAT Diskette with truncated long file name file
« on: October 30, 2021, 03:49:37 pm »
Hi

I'm using ArcaOS 5.0.6 on a Thinkpad L420. I attached an USB Floppy drive and started to read some old FAT diskettes that used to have some files with long names stored in Windows (possible Windows 98 or XP)

The filenames looks truncated (not sure which is the actual word) to 8.3.

Is there a way to see the full file name? I remember that I used to have this issue on the past but I don't know how I fixed it, or if it was fixable.

Regards

Search Hobbes for vfat, there's a few results that I haven't tested. Perhaps kc030.zip by KOMH or vfatmon12.zip.
Post your results.

If you use FM/2, in the directory container chose details view from the menu selection on the top right half of the directory container.  Then go into Details Setup and select Longnames..  See attachment.  I believe the long name is stored as an ea on the fat drive.

That will not work if the stick was written by Windows. Windows knows nothing about EAs. But it saves long names in "misused" directory entries which OS/2 knows nothing about. I suppose that the mentioned VFAT support for OS/2 is able to read these long names.

You might want to try the VFAT2EA tool (should be available on Hobbes).
That tries to read out the VFAT long names from the disk, and then creates OS/2-compatible .LONGNAME extended attributes from them. If it succeeds, you'll be able to see and use the long filenames from WPS.

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

I tried kc030.zip, vfatmon12.zip and FM/2 3.24 (thanks for the screenshot by the way). Those didn't helped, the didn't show the full names on the FAT diskettes.

VFAT2EA tool give me a different result. It worked for one diskette but not for the rest.
Code: [Select]
[X:\HOME\DOWNLOADS\VFAT2EA_V15]vfat2ea a: /B
VFAT2EA v1.5 - written by Doodle and OAX
* Convert back EAs to VFAT Long Filenames (EA2VFAT)
  -------------------------------------------------
Collecting .LONGNAME EAs...
* Working with a floppy disk
* Querying partition type from OS/2...
* Found a FAT partition: [FAT12   ]
Reading FAT...
Reading directory structure...
 New VFAT-LFN : \CALIDA~1.DOC -> Calidad  total.doc
 New VFAT-LFN : \ELPROC~1.DOC -> EL PROCESO DE MARKETING.doc
 New VFAT-LFN : \REINGE~1.DOC -> REINGENIERIA.doc
 New VFAT-LFN : \CALIDA~2.DOC -> CALIDAD TOTAL.doc
Rebuilding directory structure...
Writing new FAT...

Done!

It seems that it runs and recognize the full long name on the FAT diskette, but it does not transform it to the EA (OS/2) format. (The diskette is not write protected).

Code: [Select]
[X:\HOME\DOWNLOADS\VFAT2EA_V15]dir a:

The volume label in drive A is PLAN.
The Volume Serial Number is F0B5:8DCC.
Directory of A:\

CALIDA~1 DOC       205,312 10-27-05  9:59a
ELPROC~1 DOC       106,496 10-27-05  1:25p
REINGE~1 DOC       262,144 10-27-05 11:39a
CALIDA~2 DOC       211,968 10-27-05 11:40a
        4 file(s)     785,920 bytes used
                        671,744 bytes free

Maybe I'm missing something else.

CMD displays short names on FAT. I would use another app. E.g. FM/2 can be configured to show the .LONGNAME EA in an additional row in details view: Config -> Settings notebook -> DirView -> Include in detail view. After changing this, restart FM/2.

And of course WPS' details view shows both title and real name.

Hi Andreas

I tried again just to be completely sure.

- I attached I floppy with some truncated long name.
- Checked the WPS, truncated name appeared for a folder and file inside it.
- Run "VFAT2EA a:", it process normally
- Checked CMD, truncated name appeared.
- Checked WPS, truncated name appeared again, but I closed and windows and reopened it and suddenly it showed the long name correctly for the folder and file.

I tried with a second diskette with the same procedure just to be sure and it worked. But there is somekind of delay on the WPS to see the long name. Like some 5 or 7 seconds on playing around until the WPS refresh the name.

So VFAT2EA is working, I guess I was doing something wrong before.

Thank you guys !!!

Why not use fat32.ifs? It has full support of VFAT LFN's. And it supports all of these FAT variants: FAT12/FAT16/FAT32/exFAT.

PS: if there are some problems when using the IFS, please report me to Netlabs trac (http://trac.netlabs.org/fat32/), not
to ArcaNoae bugtracker, as I'm not working for Arca.

There is a thing called LFN Tools, which provide a number of DOS commands under ordinary DOS that reads VFAT long file names.

The LFN data is stored in the file-name table as hidden files with weird attributes.  They're present under plain DOS, but you need to load Windows usually to see them.  However, the LFN tools http://lfntools.sourceforge.net/ can read these under plain DOS.  Available in english and deutsch.

Hi Valerius. I didn't know AN stripped the LFN support from the driver.

I had installed FAT32 0.10 r384 (wpi) over ArcaOS 5.0.6. I rebooted and it worked, it shows me the long file names on the WPS desktop and on the CMD.

But a new problem appear. I insert one diskette and see everything fine, I switch to a different diskettes and it shows me the same files. It is not refreshing the diskette convent even that the floppy drive makes all the sounds of reading the different diskette. That happens on the WPS and CMD too.

I'm not sure if it is a problem of FAT32 0.10 r384 or the system. It didn't happened after installing FAT32 0.10 r384

Hi Martin! AN didn't stripped LFN support from the IFS. They stripped exFAT and FAT12/FAT16 support. FAT32 depends on LFN
support, so it's not logical to disable them.

And, you, probably, need to eject the previous diskette before inserting another one. So, if you don't eject it, it will be cached.

use "eject a:" command

PS: Also note that with diskettes, performance may be very low, because of lack of caching. With flash disks and HDD's it's acceptable.
