RDP Server for OS/2?
« on: June 06, 2022, 01:39:52 am »
Hi Everyone.

FreeRDP is great as a client. But I want to go the other way. I want a RDP Server for OS/2.

OS/2 server is sitting in a VM, and I'd like to remotely administer it from a Windows host (or I guess I could use the FreeRDP client to remote admin OS/2 from another OS/2, but that's not really likely in my case).

What are my options?

-Chris

Hey Chris,

What VM are you using? I'm pretty sure VirtualBox has a built in server that can be connected to. https://www.techrepublic.com/article/how-to-connect-to-a-virtualbox-vm-desktop-remotely/

Cheers,

Paul

VNC server and VNC client by Andrey Vasilkin.

The server is compatible with UltraVNC on Windows and does file transfer.

Hi Chris,

Long time no see/hear.
If you can, I would recommend VNC, thats what I use for my headless OS/2 server.
Can we assume you want RDP as that is what you are already using for everything else?

Hi Ian.
Yes, indeed, it has been quite a while.
To answer this, and all of the questions above:
<this will drive you nuts>
I am currently running my two WSeB servers in MS Virtual PC running on XP, which itself is running on ESX (under vSphere).  8)
So at the moment I RDP into the XP host to manage the two OS/2 VM's.
So even if it's a Linux host, xfreerdp works well :)
So I've avoided setting up/using VNC - for now.
The thinking was to move the two MS VirtualPC's to native ESX Vm's and remotely administer them directly.
<sigh>

Hi Chris,

Nothing to drive anything nuts outside of normal OS/2 users doing the standard nutty things :)
ok, I see why you are doing it that way.

Your options?
Finding a RDP Server that can be compiled under OS/2,
I had a quick look at Xrdp server a couple of years ago but it looks like a wrapper for a X Window Server.
I put it in the to hard basket and stuck with VNC.

If you could movethe VM's to Virtualbox - you can use RDP - seehttps://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch07.html

The Virtual Box approach might work, but it appears that it needs the VBox Exensions. But worth playing with. I've had enough fun with local virtualisation for now... (see my next post).

You want to install the additions anyways, mouse, video support (special gradd driver, not SNAP). Shared folders, IIRC, are a bit wonky but work. Just have to be careful about them downgrading libc depending on your setup.
