QT4 Problem - CoolReader 3
« on: December 30, 2024, 11:18:38 pm »
Since there has been a lot of traffic about QT on here I might as well add my problem.  Some time ago I had my computer messed up by friends trying to load windows programs on it.  I have almost got it back to what it was except for CoolReader 3 which requires QT4 runtime which I have.  Unfortunately, although it loads nothing is shown on the screen and since this is the program that displays all my e-books I am at a loss when I  want to relax with a good story.

Any advice that helps me get CoolReader3 back up and running will be very much appreciated.

Hi Ivan, I think the first thing to do is check if Qt4 is complete or lacks something.
You can try to launch coolreader via command line to see if it prompts some error message, like missing or mismatched DLLs or other wrong files.
You may also try to use PMDLL on CoolReader.exe (or whatever is the executable name), if you're more experienced, and see what DLL does it refer. IIRC, PMDLL warns about missing DLLs.

Hi Mentore,

Thanks for the suggestion, I have tried all that and everything is there where it should be - it does in fact load but not display and I have to kill it to remove it.  The annoying thing is that it worked  without problems for 13 years but it took someone playing with windows to mess it up.

Hi Ivan

Possible config file problem? - presuming coolreader has some sort of ini or conf file lurking somewhere on your system.

I also seem to recall having problems with a qt4 app in the distant past which were resolved by deleting %HOME%\.config\trolltech.ini

Hello Ivan

First, I wanted to check if coolreader 3 was still working in ArcaOS 5.1 with all the library updates we had since 2016 (last Coolreader compile update).

It works fine on my side and I was able to open some epub files. So I guess it is not a general problem of some update on any of the libraries.

Maybe it can help:
1) On the \Home\... directory it creates the CR3 directory with the cache. Maybe you can move it somewhere and run CR3 to see if there is a change in the behavior.
2) Move CR3.INI somewhere else and run again CR3 to see if the new .ini improves things.
3) Checking of other Qt4 apps works that bad.

Regards

Hi Martin,

Thanks for trying to help.  I have discovered that it is only on this my main computer that CoolReader 3 doesn't work - it works on all my other computers.  I have a nasty feeling that windows left behind something nasty since my windows using friend has admitted what she was looking for turned out to be a con.

I think I will get a new hard disk and reinstall everything from my backup NAS which uses a linux disk format.  Maybe I can reduce the number of disks in the computer by using larger capacity ones.
