VisualAge C++ 3.6.5 (+ Fix2) - WarpIn or RPM?

Hello

I want to have an easy way to install VisualAge C++ on ArcaOS and I found it annoying to install with with Netscape and Feature Installer.

I'm being tempted to create my own IBM C/C++ Compiler 3.6.5 (+ Fix2) installer. But I don't know if I should do it on WarpIn or on RPM.

Will it be too crazy to create an RPM package for the "C/C++ Compiler 3.6.5 (+ Fix2)" ? can the compiler work on the /usr/bin and all that crazy FHS paths?

Or I should stick to WarpIn and create a directory for "C:\PROGRAMS\IBMCXXO" ?

I would vote for WARPIN which is the OS/2 way rather than RPM which is trying to turn OS/2 into a sort of clone of Linux which it is NOT, also Warpin allows one to select an OS/2 directory structure.

I think Warpin would be better, it is designed to install in its own directory. Also there would be conflicts with the toolkit components installed by RPM. Even with OS2TK45, Bitwise decided not to install all of it as an RPM, namely the SOM stuff at least, likely as it would not be a good fit with UNIXROOT.
Also if making an installer, you should do some things a bit different, like installing stuff at the end of LIBPATH instead of the beginning or give a choice of installing a setenv.cmd instead of messing with config.sys

1) About the OS2TK45, I was thinking on not to include it at all, and just use the one from the RPM or the one provided by David Azarewicz (Os2Tk45-20240311.zip).

2) I will first check what changes on the config.sys with the regular installer.  And later see how to put the option of a "setenv.cmd"

3) I also noticed that VAC includes a different SOM.DLL of the one included in ArcaOS.

While I don't know about VAC 3.6, I know you should use the one from OS/2 for VAC 3.08.

By the way, what is the legal status of Visual Age C++?

It is "Abandonware" but I don't plan to make it public if I succeed, only the .WIS file and file structure for people to create their own.

Is there any good .wis sample around when I can see how to change a text file?
I want to be able to change "SET CXXMAIN=C:\programs\Ibmcxxo" from SETENV.CMD.

Can you run sed from the WIS?
To change all occurrences of C: to %ROOT%

I have created a CD-ROM that contains a few Rexx scripts that build upon the Feature Installer. No need for Netscape. I can bundle the changes in a ZIP and then you need to do this:
1) copy your cd-rom to a tmp dir
2) drop the zip content on top of that. Due to licensing issues, you will also need to get the fixpak and put it in a subdir
3) burn a new cd-rom from that

You can then just invoke the rexxscript that allows you to select a target location. The rexx script for the fixpak needs no additional info as it can locate the install location via feature install.

Dave, I haven't created a WarpIn installer that uses a REXX script. (and I had not done any serious REXX). What I need is something that grabs in WarpIn the install path that user putted there, and send it to rexx to change the "setenv.cmd" with that path.

For the moment I have a very simple WIS file.

There is no reason to package this as a rpm:
- it does not have any dependencies on other rpm packages;
- there will be no further versions, so there is no need for an automatically update mechanism (Furthermore you do not plan to redistribute the "abandon-ware" files, so there would not be a repository anybody could update from).

This is almost certainly incorrect. Over the years I've seen numerous warning that installing VACPP would backlevel SOM unless you took steps to prevent it. In any case, v3.65 (which doesn't include an IDE) makes no use of SOM, so it isn't even needed for this package.

The only "valid" version of SOM.DLL is the one in CP2/AOS5.x:  size= 92,009  timestamp= 99/06/30 16:33:04

Hi Martin,

If you are looking for a .wis example that modifies installed files, extract vboxadd.wis from the VirtualBox Additions wpi on your ArcaOS install media.

This .wis uses cube to do the file edits because cube is always installed by ArcaOS.  However, you can always write your own REXX script to do the edits.

Since you are newish to REXX, I recommend learning to use the TRACE statement and the RXD utility.  They will make debugging your script go faster.

Regarding the SOM DLLs, do not put the 3.65 SOM DLLs that backlevel the versions shipped by ArcaOS into the .wpi or you will be unhappy with the results.

Since you are supplying a toolkit for building the distro, rather than a distro. I would recommend using WarpIN, rather than rpm, only because more users may be able to use the toolkit.

That is why I recommend the one from OS/2 rather than the one from VAC.

Martin - Netscape and Feature install isn't THAT bad.  The only gotcha is you need to size the netscape window large enough to accommodate the install screen without resizing.  Size the netscape window to the size you need  - shut down netscape, then do the feature install stuff.  Otherwise the little icon at the bottom of the netscape screen that you click on to start the install can't be reached because there are not scroll bars.  If you can't see that icon/graphic at the bottom of the last screen - you haven't sized the window large enough.

And you probably want netscape anyway for the help system.  I know the help system runs with mozilla on Windows, but (according to my faulty memory) I don't think the help system runs with any later browsers on OS/2, so you need the legacy netscape anyway.  If anyone has gotten the help system to run with mozilla please correct me here.
