OS2World Site Update
« on: March 04, 2025, 04:11:47 pm »
Hello

I needed to update OS2World. Joomla was getting obsolete and it gave me a lot of messages that the version was insecure. Plus I also had the pressure that PHP gets updated and older versions became insecure in case a vulnerability is found. An old version of PHP can be a secure risk for a server.

The issue here is that to update Joomla I needed to change the design template of the site, since the older was incompatible, and also I needed to program in PHP the module to see the latest forum posts from the main page. So there are changes in both that may no work like the past version.

The disadvantage of the new design template is that, even that is functional on Dooble on OS/2, does not render exactly as other navigators (even the same Dooble) in different platforms. I tested Dooble OS/2 for Qt5 and Qt6 with the same results.

The forum script is also a old and discontinued version, but I will leave it this way as long as I can (or as long as PHP allows it) because the latest version of SMForum is not compatible with our version of Firefox and we will need to switch to Dooble.

Regards

Also.

I'm sorry I'm very bad with fonts, sizes, colors and I don't get CSS complete.

I need to standardize the "Latest Forum Post" section with the font and color of the rest, but I don't know where to get that information from CSS. I need to keep researching that.

Have to hope that qt/dooble become useable before the switch becomes necessary...

Hello Martin and all,

Now OS2World.com has been updated here are some notes about the site's main window:
  • Its "look" is less "compact" - unless I missed some well hidden user options to customize the Joomla interface
  • There's no way to check if a followed forum discussion has been updated at a glance (No "new" flag) - unless there's a way to do it by any other means
  • No customized icon for the bowser tab (I am sure David G can help!  ;) ;) )
I don't know if something could be done.

Have a nice one you all!

Hello GG

Thanks for the feedback.

  • Its "look" is less "compact" - unless I missed some well hidden user options to customize the Joomla interface
I'm not sure what I can do here. Was it more "condensed/crused" to the center before? This template has two settings, fixed size and flexible (which means will take all the screen resolution). Maybe the flexible size way is not something that we will like. I also think it changes according the screen resolution and font size on each computer.

  • There's no way to check if a followed forum discussion has been updated at a glance (No "new" flag) - unless there's a way to do it by any other means
Sadly I think I can not do much here. The script/plugin that showed the "new" icon the forum widget in the main page it's gone. It is not supported anymore and died with Joomla 3. I made a PHP script (with a lot of cursing :) ) that shows the latest forum posts to replace that script/plugin. But let me try the weekend, since I remember that SMForum had something to let you know if a post is "new", but I will have to test it.

  • No customized icon for the bowser tab (I am sure David G can help!  ;) ;) )
The favicon got broken. I need to see how to add it now in Joomla 5

Comparing the two pictures with the same resolution. Do you mean the line (and/or space) that is between each news, on each widget(square) showing the news?
Is that what you mean with "compact" ?

Yes! The favicon (I forgot the right term) is back! Isn't that prettier ?

Sadly I think I can not do much here. The script/plugin that showed the "new" icon the forum widget in the main page it's gone. It is not supported anymore and died with Joomla 3. It's sad to read that. This function was very practical and made it easier to consult ongoing discussions.

The current "Latest Forum Posts" content is indeed more condensed than the other sections. I see there's no line spacing between the items.
I don't know for the others, but I think it is still readable without the spacing lines.

Bye for now,

Same, the new icon now shows up. The menu is at the top of the page instead of on the left, that's fine.
Good work.

Hello *,

While I am at throwing weird ideas... I wonder if 'roll-up' sections could be done in OS2World?
This would allow to focus on the ones we want to follow...

Just a thought...

Have a nice one you all !

Bye for now,

Here I'm learning some CSS. I had removed the bottom line that showed behind each "article post" on the widgets/squares. Now I have to learn how to bring the lines a little bit together, and also maybe that will help me to give (just a little) extra space between the lines for "Lastest Forum Posts", just to get some balance. Not too much space, but not too little.

About the "'roll-up'", no idea how to do that. I find a site that hast that, I will try to check how he do that.

Ok

I had to learn to use the browser "inspect" and some CSS. And also learn how to overide the Joomla basic template.

The trick was:
Quote
.lnpd_item_wrapper .lnpd_item_without_intro {
    line-height: 1;
    border-bottom: none !important;
}

Now it looks more condensed.

I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks such a login form look ugly.
