DFSee fixes problems with 32GB Flash drives
« on: September 06, 2013, 11:54:51 am »
Hi!

Just want to inform you that DFSee fixes most of the problems with modern 32GB memory sticks. To work with them, it's necessary to delete all partitions on the drive, then select it as a raw source in DFSee (using "select disk" menu option), then create LVM-compatible partition and format it to FAT32.

For example, Kingston DataTraveler works with eCS 2.2.

Well, this is not exactly news. I have been using "large" USB drives for a few years now, and DFSEE has always made them work.

I use:
Lexar 64 GB
2x Kingston Data Traveler 64 GB
2x Lexar 16 GB

I also have a Vivitar SD card reader, which works fine with an 8GB, and 16GB, micro SD card, in an SD HC adapter (comes with them). The name on them is Core Micro.

FWIW, I always use DFSEE to properly set up USB devices (including USB hard disk drives), even my old 32 MB SD card is set up using DFSEE.

If I want to share the device with windows and eCS, it gets formatted as FAT32 (using DFSEE, but it can be done with windows too). If I only want it for windows, I use windows to format it as NTFS (but the DFSEE LVM info remains). If I only want it for eCS, I format it as JFS. I also have a couple of USB hard disk drives, that have two partitions on them. One is NTFS (for windows), and the other is JFS (for eCS). One of those disks is 1 TB, and the other is 250 GB.

I should have noted that the Kingston Data Travelers, and one of my disk enclosures, are USB 3.0 devices. They work fine with eCS, as long as I don't plug them into a USB 3.0 capable port (which automatically connects them to the "dead" USB 3.0 controller). The USB 3.0 port works with USB 2.0, or 1.1, devices because they get connected to a USB 2.0 controller (which also handles 1.0 and 1.1 devices).

You can try QSINIT for this task too ;)
But it depends on BIOS - if BIOS shows connected USB devices as HDDs even if you booting from other device - QSINIT can manage it: wipe disk, create partition with LVM in mind and format to FAT32.
Not sure about success, but who knows ;) I'm using QSINIT even for logical partition creation.

I need to correct this. The 32 meg card is FAT, not FAT32. DFSEE will format it as FAT32, but trying to insert the device causes a system crash. Even windows won't allow it to be formatted as FAT32, but windows doesn't crash, it simply claims that the device is write protected (it isn't)..
