GitHub Repository - Public OS/2 Source Code - Feedback
« on: July 10, 2014, 06:07:30 pm »
Hi

Like you may know I had been collecting all open source and public available source code for the OS/2-eCS platform on the GitHub Repository.  I'm still checking on hobbes for source code.... currently stuck on "/pub/os2/dev/mm" directory but when I finish the rest of "/dev" subdirectories I will complete this phase.

As next step, I want you to check and give me feedback on the "Drivers" that have public source code that I have stored:

Please check the list at: http://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Open_Source_Software#Drivers

Please let me know:
1) If I'm missing any other driver on the list which source code is publicly available.
2) If I have some wrong information about what does the driver does, it's license or any of the text of the driver list.
3) Any other feedback, but only related to the drivers part.

Help is appreciated.
Regards.

Hi

I'm checking autonic.sys, but I'm not sure if the file contains the source code for the driver, or only the source code for the tool.

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-viewer.php?dir=/pub/os2/system/drivers&file=autonic.zip

Can someone please give me a hint?

Hi Martin,

The file autonic.zip contains the source code of both autonic.sys (the device driver) and snifpci.exe (the program that it executes).

Regards, Wim.

Hi.

I just finished uploading the code from hobbes (only the games are missing... I know) on the Github OS2World repository.  By the way I contacted the Hobbes archiver and they are working to fix the problem with the server.

So, this marks one milestone on my project of uploading all the source code related to OS/2 I can find. Now I want to focus on uploading source code from other sources that are missing at hobbes.

Request and suggestions are welcome now.

Regards.

Martin, do you know how big the total os/2 github source rep is? I think it's a good idea to have one or more copies of all that stuff so it won't be lost in case of...) After all that work it's worth it to store a few copies locally.

Good question

Right now all the files are 4GB (non-zippped) and 1246 repositories.  I have one copy here in my machine and other on GitHub. So it is a good idea to have another backup since we never know how long GitHub will be there.

I'm thinking on packing it and upload it somewhere, but when I say I'm done I always find more source code to upload. I think I will make a total backup this weekend.

There are also ways to clone all the Git repos from a organization but I didn't try them yet.
For example:
1) http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19576742/how-to-clone-all-repos-at-once-from-git
2) http://www.aheritier.net/clone-all-repositories-from-a-github-organization/
3) https://gist.github.com/caniszczyk/3856584

But I haven't tried any of those. If anybody clones it and suceed please let us know.

It's pretty small compared to modern hard drive standards) You could upload the zip file to me by ftp so I can keep a copy if you want. If so, I'll email you login and password.

I will prepare the file for this weekend.

If anybody has more source code around that the repository is missing, please let me know.

Martin, with your involvement in OS/2 you should really be familiar with the name Kim Ludvigsen))) A lot more work nos, but on the bright side, you have struck gold)

Hi Martin,

There is some overlap with files on hobbes. But be aware of shortened file names used i.e. usbec10s.zip is usbecd10s.zip on hobbes. There is also an overlap with http://www.dreamlandbbs.com/gfd/devxmpl/index.html which includes recent source code too. Seems like using the same shortened file names.

Regards.

Thanks for the heads up, I will keep in mind that.

The good things is that GitHub has a good search, so I can try to find anything that I'm upload duplicated...but my searchs are not fail-proof, so if there is anything duplicated on Github/os2world let me know.

Hi.

If it is possible I will like to challenge the community to do this two things:

1) To make a complete dump of github.com/os2world. (using the scripts I pointed before)
2) To make a complete dump of the OS2World and EDM/2 Wiki . (It can be done with a python Dump tool from WikiTeam)

I will be happy if someone can take dumps of this sites every 6 months, but not several people at the same time :)

I really do not have time to test that python scripts, and the Github and the Wikis belong to all of us (so it is complete legal), that why I think it is important to have some independent  backups around.
