OS/2 Components / Architecture - Indentifying OS/2 Files
« on: May 08, 2015, 03:06:11 pm »
Hi

Sometime ago I discussed a graphic representation (high level / Interpretation) of OS/2's architecture.
I putted it on EDM/2 : http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Category:Components

Now I want to identify which files of OS/2 belongs each component. I'm stating with Presentation Manager here: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager.  At the end I want to identify the files for each component, OS/2 Kernel (as a package), PM , SOM, WPS and Control Program.

I will appreciate your feedback, since I'm doing this research almost blind and sometime Google does not have information about each OS/2 file :)

My first example is Presentation Manager. I had listed as files that belongs to OS/2's Presentation Manager this ones:
Quote
Name    Comments
OS2SM.DLL    OS/2 session manager dynamic link library.
PMATM.DLL    PM Adobe Type Manager dynamic link library.
PMBIDI.DLL
PMCLIP.DLL
PMCTLS.DLL    PM controls dynamic link library.
PMDDE.DLL
PMDDEML.DLL
PMDRAG.DLL    DLL Forwarder. PM drag/drop dynamic link library.
PMGPI.DLL    PM graphics programming interface dynamic link library.
PMGRE.DLL    DLL Forwarder. PM graphics engine dynamic link library.
PMMERGE.DLL
PMMLE.DLL    DLL Forwarder. PM multiline entry dynamic link library.
PMPIC.DLL    PM picture dynamic link library.
PMPRE.DLL
PMSHAPI.DLL    DLL Forwarder. PM shell APIs dynamic link library.
PMSHLTKT.DLL    PM shell's dynamic link library.
PMSHELL.EXE    Presentation Manager Shell Program.
PMSPL.DLL    PM spooler dynamic link library.
PMUNIF.DLL
PMVDMP.DLL    PM virtual DOS machine private dynamic link library
PMVIOP.DLL    PM VIO calls private dynamic link library.
PMWIN.DLL    DLL Forwarder. PM dynamic link library.
PMWINX.DLL

But I still need to know which other files belongs to Presentation Manager.

I'm also wondering if "SOFTDRAW.DLL" can be consider part of Presentation Manager. It is called by PMGRE.DLL and PMMERGE. And SOFTDRAW uses PMGRE.DLL and PMMERGE.DLL too.

Hi Martin

Sometimes you can open a file with a text editor to find out a little about the file:-

-  PMCTL.MSG  -  contains what looks like error messages; probably for PMCTLS.DLL

-  PMCTL.REP  -  contains what looks like the title
                         ' P M  C o n t r o l  T e m p l a t e  f i l e '
and is related to displaying messages from PMCTL.MSG

The text editor trick does not really help with DLL files though

-  PMMRGRES.DLL  -  contains the current "window theme"; this url may be of interest http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0802H/vnewsf6.htm

-  PMVDMH.DLL  -  I could only guess at this; and my guess would probably be wrong...   :-)

Pete

Thanks Pete

I updated the page with the info you gave me.
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Components

Now I have my doubts if PMWINX.DLL belongs to PM, since it references (calls) PMWP.DLL...uhm..

There exist forwarder DLLs to PMMERGE.DLL for compatibility with older OS/2 versions. Most likely you can be sure that DLLs starting with "PM" have an impact on PM.

strings is another command that is good for extracting text from a binary file, often best to pipe through a pager such as less,
Code: [Select]
N:\OS2\DLL>strings pmwinx.dll | less
I think that pmwinx is part of the subsystem that IBM added to allow recompiling Win9x apps for OS/2 (Open32) which has evolved to Odin. It can be classified as PM and Open32. It's hard to compartmentalize some of this stuff as it serves multiple purposes or ties different sub-systems together.

Thanks Dave. I understand that it is hard to classify some files, but let's try our best :)

I'm also wondering if "BDIME.DLL" and "BIDIPM.DLL" should be consider part of PM. It references PMBIDI.DLL, PMWIN and PMGPI.

BDIME.DLL is the "Bi-Directional Input Method Editor (IME) for OS/2 PM" so I guess you could call it part of the PM but really it is more like a PM application.
BIDIPM.DLL seems to be where support for Bi_directional support for the PM lives so could call it part of the PM or perhaps the Presentation Manager section needs some subsections.

PMMRGRES is the resource library for PMMERGE.  Run RDC from Resource Manager on it to see what's in it (from an empty directory, preferably, because it creates a ton of files).  I'm not sure if it contains code as well.

I assume PMVDMH has something to do with VDM support.

Thanks for the replies. I updated the list. http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Components

Alex, can you give me some examples on how to use RDC?  I just tried it but it is not generating anything for me, maybe it is because I don't know how to use it.

Regards.

Hi Martin

Have a read through http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL0802H/vnewsf6.htm for an example of using rdc.

Thanks for the replies.

Any other "Presentation Manager" file that I'm missing on this list:
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Presentation_Manager#Files

A little help to know what does the file does on the ones that has a blank comment is also appreciated. If we do not know for sure, we can take our best shot.

You should probably define "Presentation Manager".

Didn't OS/2 1.2 have Presentation Manager?

My OS/2 2.11 has a couple of floppy disks labeled "Multimedia Presentation Manager".

Was Presentation Manager in OS/2 Warp Version 3 the same thing?
