My problem with the time in NV 4 and oprnjdk6 is that no matter how many times I set it it always reverts to GMT the next time I start NV 4.  Everything else works as expected, even down to a customised location.

The file nvj.ini can be found, and includes lines like this?

DST = A
TZOffset = 1:00

If Openjdk6 may parse the TZ incorrectly, then have you tried "Auto DST" and other DST options (Set --> Set location, and of course File - Save location to ake it stick)?

Hi Mark.

My problem with the time in NV 4 and oprnjdk6 is that no matter how many times I set it it always reverts to GMT the next time I start NV 4.  Everything else works as expected, even down to a customised location.

I am assuming it is something to do with openjdk6 rather than NV 4 but I don't run any other java programs that are time critical to check that.

Good Evening, Ivan! (at least my time)

I don't run any other time critical Java programs myself, but I know that the time on NVJ remains as I set it about two months ago (IOW, in exact sync with the date and time of this computer) everytime I open it.

It may be a problem with openjdk6, as I know it is not perfect (at least 160GA5 isn't), but, being the troubleshooter by profession, I always ask - if something is working perfectly somewhere, but not somewhere else, what is the difference?

Assuming for the time being, and for arguments sake, it is something related to NightVision, not JDK the only two culprits I can think of are:

- It is setting DST (Daylight Savings Time) for some reason - under Set Location, I have checked "Auto DST" when I saved the settings - as our DST in North America doesn't kick in until March and November every year (spring forward, fall back) I haven't seen yet whether it will automatically change the time (and in that case the change would only be one hour, not two)

- the saved time zone setting is wrong for the location, or can't be understood, so everytime you start the program it reverts to GMT instead of GMT plus two (as a default perhaps?).

When I created the user location file and edited nvlocation.txt for Edmonton, I needed to enter location, Latitude / Longitude  and time zone, listed for me in the file as "America/Edmonton".

Heres the reason, the text taken directly from nvlocation:

- Timezone - Represented as either a numeric value or a text string.
#              Numeric values are hours:minutes for eastern timezones
#              and -hours:minutes for western timezones.  For example
#              Denver, Colorado, USA can be represented by -7:00, which
#              is the standard time difference between Denver and Greenwich,
#              England.  Numeric values may range from -13:00 to 13:00.
#              Minutes must be between 00 and 59.
#              However, it is recommended to use a text string to represent
#              the timezone, if possible.  Text strings allow Night Vision
#              to automatically adjust for daylight saving time (DST).
#              They must match one of the strings that your Java environment
#              uses to describe the various timezones, and are listed below.
#              For example the zone for Denver, Colorado, USA is
#              America/Denver.

That last sentence above, Ivan, may have some bearing on your problem - Not being a programmer, I don't know how our openJDK6 environment describes various timezones, but I know there is a list of them at the top of nvlocation - perhaps for you it can't find the descriptor it understands for your time zone, and as such defaults to GMT - it lists 438 Java environment descriptors for time zones which could be used in the nvlocation text file - I just happened to find one that was exactly for my location, but it is an unwieldy process (but necessary for Java?).

Position is also important for the information

Night Vision reads the location data according to column, so it is
# important to keep information in the following columns:
#  1 - 30    Location name
# 32 - 38    Longitude
# 40 - 45    Latitude
# 47 - ...   Timezone
# Columns 31, 39, and 46 must be blank.  Do not use tabs.
#

None of that may help above, Ivan, but I think I've outlined the potential problem ............... whether you wanted to explore it further is another matter!

But Best of the day and week to you, Sir!

Mark

If "Europe/Paris" won't work, then the default North Pole and South Pole entry show that a time like "1:00" should work too.

Cosmos/2: Brussels,_Belgium                +1:00   04:21  50:50
NVSN v2.6: Antwerp, Belgium             4:25  51:13   1:00
NVSN v4.0: Antwerp, Belgium                  4:25  51:13 Europe/Brussels

This should be a full, unverified, unofficial list of all known default locations, NVSN v4's file format. In America I couldn't always be arsed to find a perfect TZ string, so NVSN v4's Auto DST may not work (to fix: modify the line in nvlocations.txt). Do not forget to insert your own town if you're going to use this whole list, and perhaps make sure that NVSN v4 can still find your default town.

Hi André,

Are you saying that actual time differences from GMT can be used rather than the text pair?  If so I will give that a try because using Europe/Paris just gives GMT, not the one hour advance of it that it should.

Hi Ivan!

I had a chance to go right back to the beginning of this topic in your first post, and noted you said you were on summer time.

I was searching the internet and noted a link to a discussion about a bug reported in various versions of Java 5:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sun-java5/+bug/49068

It seemed to occur as I understand it, only when Daily Savings Time (DST) (which I assume is the same as what you describe as "summer time" is in effect . The bug created time offset problems.

Is there anyway you can try to see if you still observe the problem when not on "summer time"?

I'm not on DST at the moment (Mountain Standard Time) so perhaps that is why with OpenJDK6 GA5 I'm reading correctly, but your not.. It was being reported as a bug in Java 5, but perhaps it crept into our version of Java 6?

Don't know if it was solved, but from reading about time/date stamping in Java, it has been a headache through various versions, related to relative vs. absolute time stamping and non conformance in many cases with ISO 8601 (the international date/time representation standard). This is supposedly fixed in Java 8.

There is also a very interesting discussion of Java Date / Time Stamping and the problems involved at:

Best!

Actually the quoted comments are saying that, and the sample file doesn't use Unix' text pair for the North Pole.

Apparently "Europe/Paris" (or a Unix text representing 2:00) is required for Auto DST, so using a number may introduce manual adjustments twice per year. So you may have to append NVSN 4.0 to a list of apps with a manual DST setting.

My earlier list of cities, a combination of several default OS/2 lists, always used the text for France.

If you weren't loving Unix solutions yet, then surely you must love Unix solutions by now... :)

Correct. In Europe "DST" may represent the whole system of using winter time and summer time, instead of one specific period with an adjusted time. Over there you have to know that "summer time" is DST, and that "winter time" is the normal time.

Hi Mark.

At the moment we are on standard Europe time (GMT +1) and NV4 still shows GMT even when I change the place to Paris.

My assumption is that it is a Java problem with our openjdk6 port and not one of NV4.  It works if I remember to set the time at the start of NV4.

Hi Andre!

Actually that is the same here - we are currently on Mountain Standard Time (MST) - we change to Mountain Daylight Time (MDT - one hour forward) in March.

Perhaps I misunderstood Ivan's first post, but I thought it may have some bearing on the problem, at least for test purposes.

After reading the linked information in my previous post, there seems to be potential problems with certain Java Date / Time classes, so I would tend to agree that its worth exploring - the question still remains though as to why the time zone setting works here, in setting and retaining correct time and not with you, Ivan. That is whats puzzling me.

Does anyone know of any other Java programs that have a time sensitive or time specific component, and works under OpenJDK6? I'd be interested in trying to reproduce the problem, if possible, just for experiments sake (I'm a great experimenter  :) when I have the time).

I also may, on one of my test machines, switch the date and time to somewhere within Daylight Savings Time, and see whether it does anything to NVJ's date / time properties.

This may sound like an extremely stupid question, but would the "set TZ" variable in OS/2/eCS Config.sys have any bearing on what Java 6 sees, time wise, when its running? More for interests sake on my part, as I'm assuming, Ivan, that everything is set correctly in whatever incarnation(s) of OS/2 / eCS you are using at the moment (and considering you stated NVJ works fine under the OS/2 / eCs version of Java 4, based on your first post).

Best!

The SET TZ is correct (it is the same on all of our workstations) and our daily check with 'europe.pool.ntp.org' using timeset only changes the odd tenth of a second.  It also changes the Daylight Saving Time at the correct time.

The attached is showing the time that NV4 has at startup, a short time ago, which is GMT  when it should be GMT+1.
