I haven't used IRC seriously since... 2007? Haha, there just really isn't a point to it, other than real-time chat between multiple people.

And this is exactly the point of it, real time chat for multiple people, with similar interests. Multiple channels a just going to further split the users though, I believe it's better to focus on a single one (netlabs?)
