OS/2 - eCS - Blue Lion - Wishlist 2015
« on: October 31, 2015, 02:03:34 am »
Hi All

I'm happy to start a wishlist:-

ACPI support - (AMD990/SB950 specifically)
USB3 support
SATA3 support
Wireless NIC support
Updated SNAP with support for current/recent ATI/AMD/nVidia chipsets

I'm sure others can add to the above  :-)

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete

I slipped this topic so we can discuss the wishlist / Santa's list :)

Let's remember last year Wish List that we discussed on this forum.  I think that some of that wishlist remains valid.

Hi

I will like quickly list Jan-Erick suggestions:

System Apps.
- A GUI (or Wizard/SmartGuide) front end to diskinfo.exe would be interesting.
- File recovery tool paired with an optional setting for JFS to always write .LONGNAME EA's or special inode filename info.
- QT4 ODBC DataBase Manager + unixODBC backend
- TCP/IP configuration tool.
- New Image/Icon Editor.

Service
-  Online software catalog. (Maybe Yumie will cover this).

Installer
- Live CD and Installer on the same media (DVD or USB)

Drivers
- which can read more temp sensors, like that embedded in modern CPUs.
- which can drive more fans like ones, which aren't announced via ACPI.

TeX Live and friends
We have an excellent TeX-IDE: TeXStudio.
We need a modern TeX-Distribution: TeX Live.

I tried that. It should build.
But at the moment, I have problem with their FreeType build.

Hi.

I have another things on my wishlist, not critical, but more related to a service for the user community.

Having a "Labs Zone" for Blue Lion customers to share files and allowing customers to contribute to that space.
The idea is that there are some projects and experiments around that can not be shared because that projects contains/requires/uses IBM OS/2 copyrighted binaries.
Ex:
- Sigurd UpdCD Warp 4.5x - Having an "AS IS / Not Supported" file beta zone where Sigurd (if he wants, this is only an example) can share his full ISO for testers to other Blue Lion customers, so he can not worry about distributing IBM files since all "Blue Lion" customers has the legal right to use IBM OS/2 files.
- OSFree for example did some experiment with RAMFS and can not share the demos because it contains IBM OS/2 files.
- My experiments breaking OS/2 VMs, so other users that want to experiment can help me breaking OS/2 VMs too.

So the idea is to have a place where people that have the rights to use IBM OS/2 binaries can share them to their own OS/2 experiments.

Freetype should be easy. Does the network build test for existing libraries? If so, you should install already ported versions of whatever has already been ported. Easiest with yum/rpm. Yumie should be out soon, at least a rc which makes things easier.

Yes, FreeType is easy, I can build it. But since TexLive has its own build system, it has its own patches and that's what's broken.
I used a precompiled FreeType. Doesn't work as well.

Getting back to the idea of this thread for requesting possible additions to Blue Lion.
I would like to see the input/output filters of Describe updated to read/write ODF documents.  Failing that a stand alone word-processor like AbiWord could be ported.

I'm a little late to the conversation. ;D  But here's my 2 canadian cents:
  • OS/2 (Blue Lion) official support under glorious Hyper-V.
  • And regular communication from Arca Noae.  Not every week but something like in between 2~3 months.
