General Discussion / Re: OS/2 in VirtualBox

Hi Travis

You need further tweaking to your VirtualBox settings and OS/2 Warp 4.52 machine.

I recommend installing Valery's VirtualBox Client addons also.

And some time ago I wrote this about configuring ArcaOS for a VM. maybe it can give you more hints.

General Discussion / Re: Future death of the personal computer?
« on: February 16, 2020, 03:11:41 am »
Hi

My point of view on this subject (PCs vs Phones) it is kind of different. To me both are personal computers and the difference of those is the input method for the device and the how they are used.

Smart phones had been a revolution for people that believed that PCs were too complicated and smartphones allowed a lot of people of the world to communicate and have access to the Internet. But the smartphones are focused on consuming content, like reading books, webpages, videos and basic communication. But smartphones are a very limited tool to create content.

To create content the traditional PCs is still required, and more specifically the keyboard and mouse input devices are still required to create things. It is still too hard to create some kind of content with a phone using the screen keyboard and the touch screen.

I don't personally think on the death of personal computer, maybe it is more that the people that only consume content/information no longer needs a full PC for it, they only require a smartphone (with no mouse or keyboard) to do that today. But people that requires to create content like documents, videos, images, etc, still require a better input device like a keyboard and mouse.

Just an observation but is it wise to post drivers for equipment that is no longer manufactured and, I suspect, no longer working?

Hi Ivan.

I already talk about it on "Martin: please do not upload outdated drivers to Hobbes" (very direct subject).

Try without the ".zip" ie just "aic7870"

I seem to recall that hobbes search does not want the ".ext " bit of a filename - works for me.

Hi Pete. I think that without the ".zip" finds the file because it is on the name of it, not in the "longer description". the idea will be that hobbes can also search inside the "long descriptions" so people can find things easily. On the files I uploaded/reorganized, I also tried to include the file name of the driver (like aic7870.add) on the long description to help people that are looking for that specific file.

Hi

I also got the feeling that search inside "Long Description" are also not working (the "Long Description is not getting indexed).

For example I try to search for "aic7870.add" and get no results, while this "Long description" has it.

Hi

I had been trying to move forward with some of the "OS/2 API Documentation Project" on the EDM/2. I had been trying to complete the "Presentation Device Driver Reference" documentation, but I found this two functions which I can not find specific documentation or details:
- GreSetCursor
- GreRealizeString‏‎

If someone can help me with documentation or at lease recreate the documentation based on what they know, it will be great.
The idea is to document those functions like.. for example... GreArc. To have the page with the same structure, like a description, syntax, parameters, etc.

Hi Martin, do you mean that upgrading to virtualbox 6.1.2 is just enough to get new gengradd.dll version working, or should be then copied/replaced in someway before changing that config.sys line?
Sorry if this is a very basic question, but nothing seems to be simple for me, even if after your suggestions I can mostly apply any solution I need  :D

Hi, just to put it clear.

If you are using a Windows host, VirtualBox 6.1.2 comes with it's own "addons" image that you can mount on the VM as a CD-ROM. Use the gengradd.dll of it instead of vbxgradd.dll. And make the change of the config sys back to gengradd.

Valerius: Maybe the mouse driver can also be updated in your package since you are using oracle's one.

Thanks

I tried again with "set c1=gengradd".
No video section freezing issues, it seems to work fine.

Hi

Just in case I changed to the Oracle's provides GENGRADD, and I no longer have the issue.

This is is the one that came with VirtualBox 6.1.2
gengradd.dll -  1-13-2020 -   65,728  bytes.  (no bldlevel)

I changed the config.sys to:
SET C1=GRADD

Can you give it a try?

Hi Valerius

I'm experiencing an issue with your Vbox vbxgradd.dll video GRADD.

When the pointer change it icon on some parts of the desktop, the image get "partially freeze" and I need to do a fresh, like "maximize the window" to restore the normal looks. I hope the attachments explains my issue in a better way.

If I change the driver to Panorama I don't get this issue anymore.

Random thoughts:
How does the Amiga crowd do it?  I was watching some footage of a conference they had, and there was a surprising amount of young faces there, considering how old the platform is.

I also think it is good to make friends with other communities, like Amiga, Qt communities, or even general open source development communities. Like when Roderick went to REXX LA to find a common ground between the two communities (Since in OS/2 we use REXX a lot). Maybe we should always try to get a little space to talk on different communities on how we use OS/2 and ArcaOS.

If I was to advocate for conversion of the os to an opensource format, I'd do it the same way the haiku folks did it.  Start with the Desktop.  Tracker was rebuilt as Open tracker.  Heaven knows the WPS could use some updates.

I like both approaches, if someone want to make a kernel and try it with the IBM's close source compoments on top (like PM, SOM, WPS) is great (Like from bottom to top). Or the other approach, trying to clone things from the WPS and going down (something like a top to bottom approach). Both ways are good to me while they produce open source things.

Maybe it can apply some crazy idea to try evolve XWorkplace into a full WPS class replacements instead of a child of IBM's WPS classes. (or at least go little by little with that goal in mind)

Hi Ian

I don't know if you have a direct contact with the hobbes archiver, but I'm experiencing an issues that affects me a little bit on posting the news on OS2World.

1) I usually link hobbes files not directly, but with the search URL. Why? because when I post the news the files are on the incoming directory and later moved to a different location. I prefer to put a link to the search so the link don't get outdated with time.
Now I have the problem that the files inside the hobbes incoming directory does not get indexed for the search as it used to work on the past. The search is no longer working for files on the incoming directory.

2) The search link URL has changed from the old hobbes to the new one.
It used to be something like:
now it is:
I think the new one is better (shorter) but it automatically broke the links of the older news on OS2World.com.
It is not a big deal since I can adopt the new URL without problems (and I prefer the new one), but maybe some "forwarder" can be set for links that goes the old search way.

I think it is time for a good old fashion summary.
These are the ideas on what the OS/2 community can do to support and help with the platform on 2020

1) Support Arca Noae and Bitwise works.
2) More reports and list of supported hardware.
3) Articles, reviews and reports of useful OS/2-ArcaOS applications. Like "Suggested Programs for ArcaOS" article.
4) More documentation on installing ArcaOS (USB stick) and features of every new release.
5) Keep improving EDM/2. More software development related articles.
6) More Instructions, articles on how to build a development environment.
7) RPM installers for OS/2-ArcaOS software. Maybe a campaign to also distribute OS/2 software on RPM packages on available or new servers for the community.
8 ) Supporting any open source cloning of OS/2 close source components.
9) Porting open source software to OS/2-ArcaOS.

I just included 9, since it was kind of obvious.   :)

Hi Travis

....Since IBM likes to keep OS/2 in the rearview mirror, our only option is do do something like Haiku has done for the BEOS.

I could not agree more and it had been an ongoing discussion on the past.

I saw BEOS and ReactOS progress and I also dream about that for our community. Finally ditching IBM and embracing open source will finally reduce the risk of getting dump again by another vendor and will allow everybody to download, modify and improve OS/2 (or the OS/2 clone) for profit and non-profit, just like Linux OS is doing today.

But sadly we don't have enough resources like money, people and skills (or even a business case) to pull a full OS/2 open source clone. Resources are basically set on Arca Noae creating drivers to allow OS/2 run on today's hardware. But there is not a longer term strategy to became an open platform and try to clone it to have a high level of compatibility with native OS/2 software.

My personal opinion about OS/4, is that is a research, educational and non-profit project, but it is not open source. The people behind OS/4 has very good skill level understanding the OS/2 kernel, but they do not believe in open source software and copyleft software. They think that if they open source OS/4, they will allow other people make money with it. I see it in a different way, selecting a copyleft license (like GNU GPL) will force the big corporate developer to share the source code with the little developer and both will work with in the same ground.

What about a different crazy dream... what if HaikuOS, ReactOS and an OS/2 clone can share the same microkernel someday and share drivers between them? too crazy :)
