Utilities / Air Boot problems
« on: September 07, 2018, 04:12:45 pm »
Yesterday I got a new Samsung S24E650XW monitor (16:10) to replace an old 17" unit.  Today I discovered that it does not like the AirBoot selection screen. All the monitor displays is a message that the video is out of range of 1920x1200. Air Boot still works but it is pot luck on which OS starts when I hit enter (depends on time).

I know that AirBoot interface is rather rudimentary (rather like the very old DOS games) and the monitor is set to auto screen resolution and will display lower resolutions than the optimum 1920x1200 but AirBoot has one that is too low to display.

As a test I borrowed a friends Philips 223V5L (16:9) and it is not happy with the AirBoot interface and give a rather distorted rendition, the monitor is 1920x1080 optimum but will auto range down.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Internet / Security Certs
« on: July 19, 2018, 04:42:58 pm »
Is there a way of updating the security certs in firefox 17.0.11?  I am now encountering some problems with some https sites that are asking for newer certs.

BTW, I know that version is old but it works on my old dell laptop and I don't want to mess with OS/2 that I managed to get working on that machine.

Setup & Installation / USB 3.0 /3.1
« on: June 23, 2018, 05:53:58 pm »
Since most of us that visit here are not plugged into the the testing network and therefore never hear how essential updates and drivers are progressing, or even if they are being worked on.  I am now working on the principle that if you don't ask you never find out so I'm asking 'is there any progress on USB 3.0 and 3.1 drivers and if there is have those creating them thought to test them on the ASMedia chipset as used on most AMD Ryzen and A series CPU motherboards?

Applications / Microsoft takeover of GitHub
« on: June 05, 2018, 11:42:42 am »
Just wondering what effect the Microsoft takeover of GitHub will have on any of the OS/2 applications hosted on there knowing the MS mantra of 'embrace, extend and extinguish'?

Setup & Installation / Panorama v Snap Video
« on: May 10, 2018, 08:03:36 pm »
I am a little mystified at the moment.

I have one computer that has been running OS/2 Warp 4.52 CP2 since CP2 landed.  Video is provided by a Radeon X550 card, Snap drivers and a 28" 1920x1200 LCD monitor.  Everything works as expected.

Since the computer is getting old I am thinking of replacing it with one of my ArcaOS mini ITX units but I still need my large monitor.  Rather than crawling about to change cables I used the maintenance partition on this computer to install ArcaOS.

Found out a couple of things.

ArcaOS install does NOT play well if there is BOOTMANAGER installed - at first reboot after installing files it says there is no operating system, getting round that is a fiddle.

The default Panorama video driver does not recognise the video card or the resolution of the monitor.  Is this normal or some bug?

By looking at the ArcaOS DVD I see there is a modified (updated??) Snap driver.  Will that work with large monitors and Radeon video cards - I am considering getting a 30" 2560x1600 monitor if it will work at that resolution with ArcaOS or OS/2.

Does anyone have experience using large high resolution monitors with Panorama or Snap?

I know that Snap v3.1.8 works at 1920x1200 with the Radeon cards I have, I have also found out that Panorama does not but would like to hear other peoples experiences.

Programming / Templates
« on: April 18, 2018, 04:52:15 pm »
I hope this is the right place for this question.

How does one create a template?

I am now moving everything from one of my old computers over to a nice new one I have just built and now I want to create the program objects for the large number of java apps that I use.  What I would like to do is create a template with the Path and File name for java already filled in to save retyping it 50+ times, the other fields can be copied and pasted from a text file.

Another thought

Since I have a text file with all the details, including icon name would it be possible to use something like a rexx script to do everything in one run and if so does anyone have such a script?

Networking / Samba Server
« on: March 15, 2018, 03:59:05 pm »
For some strange reason, it may be a senior moment, I am totally unable to add new users and/or groups to any of my samba installs.  It was bad enough that nothing would happen the first time I tried to use it until I discovered that I needed to hand produce a master.password file (something not mentioned in the readme.os2) one would assume that would be included in the 'Simple Samba Configuration Center' gui but it isn't.

Anyway, having passed that 'test' I got things up and running and has been since October of last year.  I did a new clean install of ArcaOS 5.0.2 and did the hand produce the master.password thing and got smbd.exe and nmbd.exe up and running BUT when trying to add users and groups via the 'Samba Users and Groups' gui I get an error (see screen grab) and SMBUSERS.err gives the following

Line 42 of _Login in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++               Msg.Text = substr(loginLine, pos('NT_STATUS', loginLine));
*** Error 40 Incorrect call to routine
Line 51 of Main_Create in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++         Call _Login;
Line 50 of Main in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++       Call Main_Create;
Line 50 of Main in SMBUSERS.VRM:
+++     Interpret _VREEvent;

What is going on and is there a way to get round this problem because al long as this exists I am unable to connect to any of the shares (all machines give the same 'SYS0065: Network access is denied.' error message) which rather defeats the reason for using Samba.

I am trying to get ArcaOS to install on a Ryzen based computer.  Yes, I know we don't have the usb 3 drivers yet but there are enough usb 2 ports for what I need.

So far all I can get to is the splash screen after the initial selection of keyboard etc. and it hangs there forever.

If I use a disk with a working ArcaOS install on it it starts to boot but then hangs with os2aspi showing (altf2on.$$$ in boot partition).

I remember someone said they had managed to do it but there were very few details given. I that person, or anyone else that has managed to get ArcaOS / OS/2 running on a Ryzen or A12 APU could post the details it would be most appreciated. Even suggestions to try to get past the hangs will be tried and reported on.

Hardware / Touchpad use with OS/2, ArcaOS
« on: February 15, 2018, 05:59:02 pm »
Are there any special drivers in OS/2 that can be used with touchpads and will allow the switching off of tapping?

At the moment I have a stiff plastic sheet taped over the touchpad of my Acer laptop and use a usb trackball because the slightest change in pressure on the touchpad is seen as a click of the mb1.

Setup & Installation / Printer advice.
« on: November 25, 2017, 09:21:20 pm »
I have been trying to get my Brother HL-3150CDW network laser printer to work with OS/2 and ArcaOS (at the moment if I want to print I send the print jobs through an XP VM).

There are a set of Linux drivers available for both CUPS and LPR but so far I have not been able to get either of them to work directly.  CUPS says it has created the necessary settings but has never produced a print, not even the test print.

I assume that I have missed some step in the process but having tried several times with slightly different results obtained depending on how I put the Linux drivers relative to the PPD but the final result is the same - no print.

Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Edit:
I forgot to add that I put together a Linux box and it prints with CUPS from there.

Setup & Installation / Spell check in EPM on ArcaOS
« on: November 14, 2017, 04:37:28 pm »
I assume it is just me but when I went to spell check a document in EPM the proof/spell check section of the 'Options' drop down menu were missing as were the 'Dictionary file' and 'Personal dictionary' entries in the 'Paths' section of the settings notebook - very strange since they are in EPM on all my pre ArcaOS machines.

After a bit of investigation I found that my installing IBMWORKS way back in the early Warp 4 days gave me OSLEXAM.DLL in \os2\dll and UK.DIC and USER.DIC in \os2.  These are required for EPM to do proofing and spell checking (the UK.DIC is country specific and I assume there is a US.DIC as well as the other countries supported by IBMWORKS).

I don't know if there is supposed to be the OSLEXAM.DLL (or its equivalent) installed in ArcaOS or not, it wasn't on my install but I now have proofing and spell checking back on EPM.

Setup & Installation / Samba server on AOS
« on: November 05, 2017, 02:00:50 pm »
Has anyone managed to get samba server working on ArcaOS?  If so can you please give me the correct incantation and number of chicken entrales I must sacrifice to do so.

OK, the last might be a joke but it does not change the requirement in any way.  The readme says nothing, the samba-howto-collection might but I think it would be better to have it as a pdf document and the Netlabs instructions seem rather irrelevant to what gets installed on ArcaOS at initial install time.

So far no matter what I do I cant get smbd.exe or nmbd.exe to run therefore samba server is not running.

I would normally assume that when software is installed it will be in a working state, maybe not at full potential but at least working.

I have tried reinstalling ArcaOS several times just in case I had missed something - still no working samba server yet the ArcaMapper samba client works without problems which allows me to connect to the samba servers of my NAS boxes (setting up the SMB on the NAS boxes involved just ticking a box to activate it and another box to indicate user/s - if it is that simple what is wrong with our version?).

Setup & Installation / USB questions
« on: October 03, 2017, 10:28:48 pm »
Today I was able to try a couple of high end Corsair USB keyboards, K55 and K95, on my ArcaOS ITX build and an older WSeB build plus a win7 laptop for comparison.

The K55 is seen by USBRes and gives a device report BUT does not work - no output at all. The corsair-K55-keyboard.txt is the USB data from a windows computer and the other is the device report from USBRes.

The K95 is seen by USBRes and partly works if set to legacy mode - the 18 extra function keys are not seen on os2.  The corsair-k95-keyboard.txt is the USBRes output (couldn't get the win USB output not enough usb ports on the laptop).

I was also able to see a Mini ITX board that takes an AMD Ryzen CPU/APU but it has a problem - only USB3 ports.  I also noticed that all the laptops available likewise only have USB3 ports.

All this raises the question, just how compatible are our USB drivers?  I don't want to shell out several hundred euros for an ITX board and processor only to find it can only be used with windows.

I have a couple of AMD based ITX boards that have both USB2 and USB3 ports and am prepared to run any tests should they be required

Applications / Windowed win 16 session
« on: September 26, 2017, 04:36:00 pm »
Has anyone got a windowed win 16 session to run on ArcaOS with the panorama driver?

I have no problems on my Warp 4.52 installs with SNAP but I just can't get it to work on ArcaOS/panorama.

Utilities / PCL6 Printer driver
« on: March 20, 2017, 01:56:25 pm »
I am wondering if anyone has a better memory than I.

Do we have a PCL6 printer driver in OS/2?  I have vague memories from way back in the days of Passport Advantage that there was such an item and my notes from that time are long gone.

If we do I will have saved a local charity some money and they will have a couple of reasonable laser printers for nothing.
