Mounting a drive to your NAS could be "problematic". I never got it to work against my QNAP but others here have had success. You'll need to install either IBM Peer for OS/2 or IBM LAN Requester for OS/2 in order to get the actual "net use" command which is what you need. And you'll need to crank down all the security on your NAS since Warp Connect only supports SMB1 and NTLMv1.

You may find it easier to simply connect via FTP - you should have command line FTP and PMFTP with Warp Connect.

Personally I tend to run FTPd on Warp Connect as a background service and "push" files onto my Warp Connect PC from my modern Windows desktop using FileZilla or equivalent. If you need instructions for that (where to find the settings) then just shout.

Hi Mark,

I know from experience that the 3C589D drivers are very buggy so you did the right thing to swap to a Xircom. I've got a few Xircom PCMCIA and CardBus cards and have never had problems with OS/2 Warp Connect with them.

They definitely don't need any additional PCMCIA card/socket drivers so you definitely want to make sure that all of that is uninstalled (disabled might not be enough).

Fire-up Selective Install and make sure PCMCIA support looks like the photo below. This is how I have it on my IBM ThinkPad 390X with a Xircom R2BE-100BTX and you can see it's pinging away quite merrily over TCP/IP.

Make sure too that you're using exactly the right driver for your Xircom PCMCIA or CardBus NIC. They have very similar model names but the right drivers aren't interchangable. For example the driver for an RBE won't work for an R2BE and vice versa.

Best,
Richard.

ClearHDD is another great tool to clear a drive - I use this all the time to quickly wipe a drive before installing OS/2 and it works great.

Here's the Vogons thread:
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=27285

And here's the direct link to ClearHDD:
https://www.vogons.org/download/file.php?id=8595

Pop it on a DOS boot floppy, boot with the disk and run the following to clear drive 0 (the first IDE drive in the system):

Hi Martin,

Here's the English UK special bundle of OS/2 2.1 with WordPerfect 5.2.

If you'd like me to send you the unedited high-res original images by email just let me know.

Best,
Richard.

It would be great if yours could get on there though, better provenance.

Now uploaded!

I also had an OEM release of OS/2 2.1 at one time that I did install and for the hell of it, for a while had it on my Warp V4 system. I'll zip it up. Goes in \OS2\INSTALL and my config.sys had this close to the top,
Code: [Select]
DEVICE=E:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\PREL_IMG.SYS E:\OS2\INSTALL\PRELOAD\WELCOME.RGB 5
Adjust drive letter as needed. Can't remember much else, might have been a tutorial.

Thanks very much Dave, I'll install that and see what it is!

There's been a small amount of discussion in one of the other sections about OS/2 2.11 on CD-ROM and it reminds me that I'm still trying to track down a genuine copy to add to my collection. I know it's available on Archive.org, and by way of a very long winded and manual process I actually made my own CD-ROM version from my floppy disk version. But I'm still really keen to get hold of a genuine OS/2 2.11 on CD-ROM at some point. Ideally the full boxed product, but in the mean time I'd be happy to make do with just the CD in a jewel case or cardboard case.

I can see from this forum history that I made a similar post/request in March 2024!

So if anyone has OS/2 2.11 on CD-ROM that they'd be happy to part with please do get in touch and let me know what you want for it. I live in the UK so I accept that that might add a fair bit to the shipping costs  ;)

Thanks,
Richard.

I think the WinOS2 fix is so that you can run either Windows 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on OS/2 2.11 without needing to upgrade to OS/2 Warp (which supports Win311 and WfW311 natively). I have the same fix downloaded as a zip file but I've never gone to the effort of actually installing it on any of my OS/2 2.11 systems.

I'm very happy to be corrected but my understanding of the fix is that, despite what it says in the README, it doesn't actually patch OS/2 2.11 to work with Win3.11. It actually applies some corrective code to WinOS2-3.11 to essentially downgrade it back to WinOS2-3.1.

And speaking of OS/2 2.11 on CD-ROM - I have a couple of boxed copies of OS/2 2.11 on floppy disk but have been trying to track down a CD-ROM variation for some time now. Even though I made my own version by way of the massively over-complicated text file I uploaded, I would still like a genuine one for posterity's sake. So if anyone is interested in parting ways with OS/2 2.11 on CD-ROM, even if it's just that CD-in-a-cardboard-sleeve version, I'd be keen to hear from you. I'll make a similar post in the Marketplace section as well.

Best,
Richard.

There has been a German OS/2 2.11 CD-ROM which needed if I rember right two floppy disks (1,44) for starting an installing. I think it has been part of a computer magazin. I guess I could find these CD-ROM in my cellar if digging through the huge pile of old software CDs.

Do you know if that one supports IDE CD-ROM drives? There's a copy of the English language CD-ROM edition of OS/2 2.11 on Archive.org but I think it just supports a very limited set of (non-IDE) CD-ROM drives:

...along with the recommended updated IBM IDE/ATAPI drivers as a zip-file

And here are those updated IBM IDE/ATAPI drivers.

These actually came from Bogdan in another post here:

By any chance did you produce some instructions on how to update the installation diskettes for OS/2 2.11 ? I'm trying to get IDE CD-ROM support on Virtualbox.

Yes! But it's horrendously complicated. Nevertheless the steps definitely work, it just takes quite a bit of effort to work through them.

I've tidied up my notes in Notepad (i.e. TXT format only) and attached them here, along with the recommended updated IBM IDE/ATAPI drivers as a zip-file (I think that will need to be in another forum post as it looks like it only allows one attachment per message).

If you get tired of trying to work through the instructions then let me know and I can send you private links to a WinImage of the modified Diskette 1, and an ISO of the resultant OS/2 2.11 CD-ROM.

Best,
Richard.

In addition to the ones listed on os2site.com, CA-Realizer was a basic interpreter and development package released for OS/2 and Windows, but it is hard to find. You might find one on ebay.

I archived and uploaded CA-Realizer to Archive.org a while ago. Jean-Yves (from these forums) was also playing around with it a while back but he had some trouble installing it on his system.

Personally I'm hoping to get into VX-REXX now that I (finally!) got hold of a boxed copy of VX-REXX v2.1 from eBay a few months back. I should really get that uploaded to Archive.org as well - I guess that's tomorrow's to-do list sorted!

Hi Martin,

Thanks, yes, I use one of these, it's an IDE to Compact Flash Adapter
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000T9QQP0

This particular device (StarTech.com) definitely works perfectly happily with OS/2!

Best,
Richard.

Hi CalYY,

A very belated "thank you"! I apologise, I didn't see this post for some reason, someone else pointed it out to me just recently!

That does help, thank you. It's not quite what I'm looking for as it still causes the mouse to be quite jittery but I'm going to try and get used to it since it's definitely an improvement over the stock speed.

Best,
Richard.
