That did it, I outputted the yum list install>yumlstinst.lst and there were a lot of entries.
Deleting ANPM.ini and rebooting got it working again. I installed a bunch of missing packages for firefox and now I'm back on the internet with firefox45.9.0 daily.
Thank you all for your help and input.
Don't know what deleting the old etc, usr and var did to my system, but I should be able to reinstall anything that is not working.
