Hardware / Re: PCI Parallel Port card install -- need info
« on: February 14, 2014, 11:49:56 pm »
Hi Klipp,

I don't know if this applies with PCI cards but the old multifunction cards used to have jumpers that set the IRQs for the various ports.  If I remember correctly the OS/2 drivers that support the the printer ports require the IRQ to be below IRQ15 and your PCI output shows the assigned IRQ to be 22.

How you get round this I don't know but I think it should be possible.  The windows inf file might give a clue as to how windows does it or you might have to reserve an IRQ in the bios for the card.

Hi Alex.  That works IF the print server (nas) is awake.  It does not wake up the print server.

We might be getting somewhere with this, thanks.

More testing later to see if a print to file raw file prints.

Eirik, that sounds interesting but does it work with a password protected print server?  I ask because the print server we use is built into the NAS we use to store the data from the test equipment and client information and so had to have password protection.

Thanks Doug and Herwig.  That is exactly as I have it (see smb-prn.jpg).  The problem is that it does not work.

Although the print server is on 24/7 it goes to standby after half hour of no use as does the HP laser printer, but that shouldn't be a problem because it isn't for windows running in the VM on the same machine.  I even went to the trouble of moving the computer over to the room with the printer and did a direct connection with a USB cable just to check the drivers do work - it does print that way.  There is no way that I am going to move the 38kg printer into my office especially when our test instruments are able to print to it over the network, which is its main use.

Now the question is does samba printing actually work on OS/2 eCS?  If it does, what versions of the various components are needed and where should they be placed - root directory, boot partition etc.?

Herwig, do you have a how-to to get SMB printing working on OS/2 over a network to a password protected print server?

I have tried many times and failed every time - usually with some message about connecting to a password protected print server yet I can print to the same password protected print server from windows running in VirtualBox on the same OS/2 machine.

I agree with Sigurd, the lack of information is not doing the platform any good.

On Tuesday I told a client not to even think about getting eCS because of the uncertainty and gave them pointers as to where they should look foe OS/2 licences instead.  We are only a very small organisation but word does get passed around the industry and when the main supplier does not say what is going on people become very concerned about doing business with them.

The new branch of Mensys appears to be aimed at the banking sector and if they play the same game there they will be told that they are not wanted in no uncertain terms.

Storage / Re: Using a 1 TB USB hard drive
« on: February 05, 2014, 10:06:11 pm »
I agree with Doug.

I have three computers with two or more 1.5TB drives each in them (all running WSeB CP2).  All of these drives are SATA and I am using the latest Dani driver in each case.  The first drive on each box is internal (one has a second internal drive) and the remainder of the drives are in removable SATA caddies.  I also have several 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB drives that get slotted into a USB/SATA adapter for use as necessary.

In no case have I had anything than the standard OS2DASD.DMD line in config.sys and, like Doug, all I did for the USB drives was to clear the MBR region with DFSee and use DFSee to make the partitions.  They just work!

I do remember several years ago that we had a client that added a 650GB IDE drive to one of his systems then brought it to us because they were having problems.  All we did was replace the IBM1S506.ADD with DANIS506.ADD.

As far as I know the IDEDASD options only apply to IDE drives and when using the IBM1S506.ADD driver.

Hi Dave,

I was having problems with some web sites and ended up using http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ to find out if they were in fact down or if the problem was somewhere between me and them.

You might try that first and only dig deeper if you have to.  In regards to OS2 World I too have seen a few time-outs but not long later I can connect without problems.  I've put this down to bandwidth problems at the server farm.

Neil, is there any reason that you need NTFS on that drive?  If not then just use DFSee to blank the drive and then create a JFS partition.

I have several 2TB drives that I fitted into SATA/USB drive holders that I formatted as JFS and use to make image backups of our servers - no problems at all with WSeB seeing the full capacity or writing to the drives.

Setup & Installation / Re: USB Keyboard Wedge Device
« on: January 22, 2014, 07:40:51 pm »
From what I have been able to find out it would appear that it needs more software than just the usb keyboard driver .

The keyboard driver is just the interface between the device and the reader software and as far as I know there is no reader software for OS/2 eCS although IBM might have the software for some of their very large OS/2 clients.

The simple way to put the usb keyboard driver into your config.sys is to cut this DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS  and paste it into your config.sys with all the other usb lines.

If you were using OS/2 I would say that you should get a copy of usbres.wpi and usbhcd196.zip from hobbes, install usbres and update usbresmg.sys from the zip, but I understand that eCS has something that replaces usbres and is supposed to do the same job - giving details of attached usb devices.  Because I don't have eCS here I will have to leave that to others to say what it is [see Doug's reply]

Martin, is it possible to delete the second copy of this thread?

More details please, for example;

List the USB statements from your config.sys.
Does HCIMONIT show the same USB controllers as config.sys?
Do you have USB keyboard.sys active or is it like this REM DEVICE=C:\OS2\BOOT\USBKBD.SYS?
What are you using to detect and show your USB devices?

By giving answers to most of those questions we might be able to help resolve your problem.

I use two years old Pasha's unimac, it works with it.
Not sure about OS/4 kernel dependance, he removed it in one of revisions.
Driver can be broken under heavy network load (never seen it, but Pasha seen - when virus occupied office network), and it works only if all USB drivers installed (something with interrupts?).

walking_x, do you have a URL for that driver or could you post it here please?

Andi, that looks very interesting.  Could you say what it is and who the manufacturer is and where can I get specifications and manuals for it?

It would be nice if there was a list of the URLs where all these parts are kept - including the updates.
