Title: TAME/2 (OS2 Warp 4.52 on Virtualbox)
Post by: mauro on March 10, 2019, 02:35:13 pm
Hi, have installed Tame/2.
On Virtualbox devices menu I have activated the usb connection to my Canon Lide 100 usb scanner.
Runned Tame2 for first time, it asks for scanner model selection, and among Canon models it goes up to Canon Lide 60 wich seems the nearest to my Canon Lide 100 (not in the list). Selected it, then I begin scanning preview or scan to file which take to the same output: a 0 kb tif file = non file scanned.  And I expect such result, as during the scanning interface displaying  the progress bar, which means that the scanner is doing the job, I do no not hear any working noise from my scanner, it is not active.
Could it be a usb port connection matter or what else?
Thank you

My experience with Tame on real hardware with a USB scanner was that it worked well with the old USB drivers but stopped working when something was changes with newer drivers and Sane.

Now all the scanning I do is from my Brother colour laser via ftp.

Hi mauro

Open a command window in the directory containing scanimage.exe

Then run scanimage with -L to list devices it finds and -T to test the backend driver. I suggest this as it seems the scanner is not being found

I have not used a usb attached scanner for a while but seem to recall that problems arose if libusb.dll was not current.

Hi Mauro, Ivan and Pete
Mauro  After reading your post, decided to give tame/2
another try on a new install of arco 5.0.3
with same results as you and as I had some time before

Ivan, sounds like a usb problem

Pete  I did try scanimage -L  and my scanner was correctly identified
HP7400C flatbed

then tried       scanimage _T with the following response
scanimage: received signal 15
scanimage: trying to stop scanner
sane-find-scanner replied with : no usb scanner found

a libusb problem????  and is there a solution

Hi mauro & Phil

I had a hunt for some emails I exchanged with Paul, sane porter, the last time I set up a usb scanner which I had some problems with. In fact, I had it working as a wirless scanner before I got the usb connection working.

Paul did build a version of sane 1.0.24, dated sometime April 2015, for me to test which worked fine with usb and it still seems to be here http://smedley.id.au/tmp/scanimage.zip

Might be worth trying...

There's a couple floating around including one that can be installed with ANPM IIRC.

Hi to all and thanks for all the input.
Last night looking for an unrelated item, ran across
an old posting I had printed, posted on this forum by Ivan
dated march 25 2016  Topic: Problems with Tame.
Several replies.  Perhaps digging into the archive and reposting
would be helpful.

Hi mauro

This result shows no scanner available:-

[C:\APPS\TAME]scanimage.exe -L
device `test:0' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `test:1' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device

If I had to guess the problem I would go with ivans suggestion of usb driver problem...

You could try the later sane (scanimage) package.
You may also need the later libusb package - check date of any installed libusb10.dll against package date. If I remember correctly libusb handles usb without using usb drivers - apart from, possibly, the usb controller.

When installed retry the scanimnage -L command.

I would also suggest the later sane package.

1. Have a look at what I had to do to use my LIDE 210 (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,974.msg11025.html#msg11025) scanner.

2. Add your LIDE 100 scanner to your GENESYS.CONF as follows:

usb 0x04a9 0x1904

Hi Paul, using the latest scanimage, exe version did not prudiced anu change.
Then replacing the libusb10.dll whit the latest suggested version, took many output lines on prompt command scanimage.exe -L and -T,  I paste here just the last ones as I cannot scroll up the previous lines on the command window:

Wish I could get my scanner - wireless connected Canon PIXMA MG7550 - working with TAME as that would be a bit easier than playing command line cowboy to get a scan using scanimage.exe

Hi all

Mauro, good you got your tame issues resolved,  wish mine were as well.
started all over again with a
fresh install of arcos 5.0.3and usb works fine including printing to a
usb cups printer Epson Stylus Photo 1400.
Installed Tame/2.  Tried every suggestion still no scanner
and in the effort I lost ability to print
in command line (tame folder), ran sane-find-scanner--result
was no usb scanner found
ran scanimage -L-- result correctly identified my backend  "avision"
and scanner  HP 7400C flatbed
ran scanimage -T-- result was blinking curser, onexiting command line
rec this msg  Scanimage: received signal 15
                    Scanimage: trying to stop scanner
Considering tha I started with the abilityto print, I searched the computer
usb and found in D:\user\lib\cups\backend\usb,exe
Is it possible that this usb,exe could be the cause of this conflict (version
differance)???

Any coments, thoughts, advice or help would be greatly appreciated

regards  Phil

Hi Phil

I think that sane-find-scanner was used for scsi attached scanners - may be wrong.

scanimage -L seems to have delivered the correct result.

How long did you wait for the scanimage -T command to run? - takes a few seconds here, maybe 15.

D:\user\lib\cups\backend\usb,exe is the backend needed by cups to print to a usb printer. If this is not a duplicate leave it alone.

To check out printing problems you need to load the cups interface in your browser - http://localhost:631/ - and check the error log for clues. You may have to set the error log to debug and retry a print job to get detailed report.

Pete

Hi Phil

I think scanimage should find a connected, powered on scanner but I read somewhere that it may be an idea to make sure by editing the .conf file.

You are using the avision.conf file so probably want to uncomment 1 of the usb lines:-

# usb libusb:002:003
# usb 0x03f0 0x0701

It may make a difference...

Hi All

Well, that is a surprise.

Having tried to help in this discussion made me decide to try getting Tame/2 to work with my Canon PIXMA MG7550 again.

The scanner does work with scanimage.exe - although I have to "reboot", ie power scanner off/on after every scan, due to a bug that, hopefully, will be fixed in the next release of sane - so, in theory, it should work with Tame/2.

My 1st step was to locate and download the latest build of Tame that I could find which seems to be available from
 here https://os2ports.smedley.id.au/index.php?page=sane-for-os-2

I then deleted the contents of my \programs\tame directory and ran the downloaded tame package tame20080426.exe which is a self contained wpi installer package.
NOTE: This package contains Tame/2 plus other packages. I deselected all packages except Tame/2 which I then installed.

I then copied my scanimage.exe and pixma.conf files from my sane installation to the Tame directory - being hopeful that no other sane files are required.

Having tried to get this scanner working previously I was aware that the scanner needs an entry in the Tame file scanner.dat and that I had a backup of this file containing the, possibly correct, entry data so copied the modified scanner.dat from my backups over-writing the just installed scanner.dat file.

NOTE: scanner.dat is a binary INI file and can be edited using INI Editor from INI Tools or any other capable ini file editor. I seem to recall that to add my scanner to this file I created a new Application, Canon PIXMA MG7500 series, then simply copied another similar scanner Keys entries - possibly a Canon LiDE30.

With, hopefully, everything in place I started Tame/2, selected my Canon PIXMA MG7500 series scanner, saved settings, exited Tame/2 and restarted Tame/2.

I checked the printer/scanner was powered on and then clicked the "scan to file" button.
The attached Captured1.jpg is the result  :-)

Just hoping the next release of sane does cure the "end of scan" problem that plagues the scanimage.exe I am using.

Pete

Thanks for your suggestions

Wim,  tried yours and did not work

Pete, I followed your work around and went so far as to update
usb stack.
results were Tame would not scan
then opened command prompt window to tame folder
ran scanimage -L  scrolled very fast  through what
look like many pages of debug info and then correctly identified
backend and scanner

ran scanimage -T same scrolling action  at end of scrolling appeared to
be running test and gave same end of page error you received

will have to do more research

Hi Phil,

Which usbresmgr do you use ?
The one provided by ArcaOS or the one installed by TAME ?
The latest TAME build should be compatible with ArcaOS usbresmgr  (this was told to me in 2017).

I didn't go forward to the TAME issue due I installed a ADS-1600W scanner which allow scanning doc and send them through ftp on my disk. Of course, I use default scannning option or I have to change parms on the scanner it self (not an ideal option)

Hope You'll get a solution

thanks for your help.
to answer your question,  I have tried both as well as usbcalls.dll
or comb's of both.  now, I have followed Petes example and installed
only Tame/2 and copied over those files from arco os install and
copied over remaining files (hopefully all necessary files) from the
most recent sane
I will keep on with researching to solve

Hi Remy,

Regarding your Brother ADS 1600W, I have one of those and so far I haven't had to do a document setup on the touch screen because I used the web setup to define the options for the various documents - I also duplicated those options on my Brother DCP-9020cdw printer.

Hi Paul
Here is my latest attempt at Tame/2
Fresh install of ARCO OS 5.0.3
Downloded and installed latest usb stack for sane
Downloaded latest lib10 and installed xxx:\os2\dll
Downloaded and installed Tame/2(only Tame/2)
Downloaded latest sane and installed to Tame/2 folder
Downloaded and installed iniedit,  on running iniedit
my scanner was in the list,  so I assumed no change necessary
I see usbresmg in config.sys
I see usbcalls.dll in libpath
instructions does't specify, but considering  libc066 is a dll
I put in config.sys libpath
Rebooted after each install
Opened command prompt window to /tame
ran scanimage -L and got this result after scrolling thru several
pages of what appears to be debuging info:A non
recoverable error occured.  the process ended

Paul Hope you received the debug file I sent
This was my recent attempt at tame
Any thoughts or corrections to my procedure
would be most welcome

Hi Paul,

Since the old SANE I was using (that came with TAME) no longer works with the current USBRESMG.SYS, I tried this new build.

The good news is that scanimage -L detects my scanner successfully.  (So does sane-find-scanner, actually, in spite of what the readme says.)

The bad news is that it only works when the executable resides in a directory called 'sane' (not necessarily off the root).  Unfortunately, TAME/2 requires scanimage.exe to be in its own program directory, so I cannot use it from TAME/2.

Hi Pete,

Yes, I've tried that.  scanimage simply will not detect the scanner unless it's in a directory named 'sane'.

Code: [Select]
[E:\PROGRAMS\TAME]scanimage -L
device `test:0' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `test:1' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
Code: [Select]
[E:\PROGRAMS\TAME\sane]scanimage -L
device `plustek:libusb:001:005' is a Canon CanoScan N1240U/LiDE30 flatbed scanner
device `test:0' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `test:1' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device

scanimage.exe and all conf files are in both PROGRAMS\TAME and PROGRAMS\TAME\sane\etc\sane.d

Have you set:
set sane_config_dir=\sane\etc\sane.d
to point to an appropriate directory? afaik that's the only hardcoded path. I could probably work around this for tame purposes.

Have you set:
set sane_config_dir=\sane\etc\sane.d
to point to an appropriate directory? afaik that's the only hardcoded path. I could probably work around this for tame purposes.

I just tried this. No dice, unfortunately.

(I tried with both forward and backward slashes, and with \sane both in the root and not in the root.)

Code: [Select]
[E:\programs\tame]set sane_config_dir=\sane\etc\sane.d

[E:\programs\tame]scanimage -L
device `test:0' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `test:1' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device

Hi Alex

scanimage.exe and all conf files are in both PROGRAMS\TAME and PROGRAMS\TAME\sane\etc\sane.d

The .conf file *must* be in the Tame directory not a subdirectory. Here is what happens for me:-

Code: [Select]
[J:\PROGRAMS\TAME]scanimage -L
device `test:0' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `test:1' is a Noname frontend-tester virtual device
device `pixma:MG7500_192.168.1.252' is a CANON Canon PIXMA MG7500 Series multi-f
unction peripheral

[J:\PROGRAMS\TAME]

I am using

Code: [Select]
[J:\PROGRAMS\TAME]dir *.conf

The volume label in drive J is Apps.
The Volume Serial Number is C642:65BE.
Directory of J:\PROGRAMS\TAME

22-03-19 12:13a           647    344 a---  pixma.conf
.
.
[J:\PROGRAMS\TAME]dir scanimage.exe

The volume label in drive J is Apps.
The Volume Serial Number is C642:65BE.
Directory of J:\PROGRAMS\TAME

21-03-19  9:54a     4,817,128    481 a---  scanimage.exe

and only the Tame package from the tame/sane package available here https://os2ports.smedley.id.au/index.php?page=sane-for-os-2

Hi Alex

Just to correct my last post: scanimage.exe seems perfectly capable of finding my scanner without needing a .conf file handy.

Do you have any sane/tame lines in the config.sys file that may be interfering?

hi all, hope to give a useful indication consisting -this is what I did- in placing libusb10.dll in  /usr/lib , (not in  /OS2/dll) .

Interestingly, it looks like this package is actually about three months newer than the one I had installed.  OTOH, the TAME binaries seem to be the same, only the sane programs were newer (April 2008 instead of January 2008), but they actually work with the current USBRESMGR which the latter did not.

Anyway, what I did was rename my whole TAME directory, then install the above package, then replace scanimage.exe (only) from Paul's latest build.  And now scanimage works just fine, and so does scanning from TAME.

I wonder what made the difference...

Hi Alex

Glad tame/2 is working with latest scanimage.exe for you now.

My best guess is something in the tame/2 binaries makes the difference... maybe compile/make options...

How I installed SANE and TAME for the first time on my ArcaOS system. I used a two step approach.

1. First of all I tried and installed the latest version of SANE on my ArcaOS system. For that I downloaded "sane-backends-1.0.27-os2-20190321.zip" from Pauls website. I unpacked it into the root directory of my g: drive. My ArcoOS system resides on my h: drive. I prepared some command files to try and test if I could detect my scanner and scan with my LiDE 210 scanner and that works.

2. Once I got SANE working I tried and installed the latest version of TAME on my ArcaOS system. For that I downloaded "tame20080426.exe" from Pauls website and installed it into the h:\Programs directory. NOTE: Select ONLY the "Tame v1.05 (V1.0.0, 4,901 KB)" package! Then I added the line "SET SANE_CONFIG_DIR=G:/SANE/ETC/SANE.D" to H:\CONFIG.SYS and I rebooted my ArcaOS system. After that I copied scanimage.exe from the g:\sane directory into the h:\Programs\tame directory. Scanning with my LiDE 210 scanner works.

xfind.cmd:
Code: [Select]
@echo off
setlocal
set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
g:\sane\sane-find-scanner 1>xfind1.txt 2>xfind2.txt
endlocal

xlist.cmd:
Code: [Select]
@echo off
setlocal
set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
set SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS=255
set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
set sane_config_dir=g:/sane/etc/sane.d
g:\sane\scanimage -L 1>xlist1.txt 2>xlist2.txt
endlocal

xscan.cmd:
Code: [Select]
@echo off
setlocal
rem set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
rem set SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS=255
rem set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
set sane_config_dir=g:/sane/etc/sane.d
g:\sane\scanimage -v 1>xscan.pnm 2>xscan.txt
rem g:\sane\scanimage --mode color --resolution 75 1>xscan.pnm 2>xscan.txt

rem g:\sane\scanimage --mode color --resolution 1200 1>xscan.pnm 2>xscan.txt
endlocal

xtest.cmd:

setlocal
rem set SANE_DEBUG_DLL=255
rem set SANE_DEBUG_GENESYS=255
rem set SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255

Hi Wim

The "SET SANE_CONFIG..." line does not seem to be needed - not set in config.sys here, not used in a cmd file, scanimage simply works without it.

Hi guys,

I'll try and remember to check the same code, but if I remember correctly, it will either look ok ./conf or /sane/..../ Or in the directory specified by sane_config_dir

Hi Pete,

The "SET SANE_CONFIG..." line does not seem to be needed - not set in config.sys here, not used in a cmd file, scanimage simply works without it.

The way I installed SANE and TAME does require CONFIG.SYS to contain that "SET SANE_CONFIG_DIR=G:/SANE/ETC/SANE.D" statement.

Running those cmd files when these are e.g. present on the desktop does require those "set sane_config_dir=g:/sane/etc/sane.d" lines as well.

Regards, Wim.

Hi All

Clearing up some confusion I may have caused regarding the sane scanner.conf file:-

scanimage.exe when run from sane directory does not need SET SANE_CONFIG_DIR in config.sys

To use Tame requires either a copy of the scanner.conf file in the tame directory or SET SANE_CONFIG_DIR in config.sys
