Virtualization / Re: something on ArcaOS 5.0 in Virtualbox
« on: Today at 02:57:36 pm »
Hello Mauro

1) Windows dragging. On my VM I still have something similar to your video.

2) About the "dirty tracks". I remember I used to have that long time ago. I think it got resolved by using a newer GENGRADD from the VirtualBox Addons.

Just as a personal note, I stopped using "Valery's GA 5.0.51 r218" when the official VBox starting shipping the VBox OS/2 Addons with WPS support for shared folders. But at this moment I recommend only version 7.2.4 and not upgrading the addons to 7.2.6.

Just in case, ArcaOS 5.1.1 comes with VBOX Addons and does an specific install procedure that had saved me time and works fine.

If someone else has anything to add I will include it to the ticket. Fell free to include anything else.

Virtualization / Re: VBox Guest AddOns 7.2.6

Hello

I updated VirtualBox host (Windows) to version 7.2.6 and updated the extension pack. No issue here, ArcaOS 5.1.1 BIOS keeps booting fine.

But on the guest ArcaOS 5.1.1 I also updated the addons to version 7.2.6.

Now I'm experiencing some issues:
1) The SharedFolder drive is not auto mounting. If I run "vboxcontrol sharedfolder use d: OS2TEMP" (in my case) it will mount.

2)  The worst issue is that the bidirectional Clipboard sharing is no longer working. (The copy+paste between the guest and host)

Do you suggest something else I may be missing on the configuration?

If someone confirm the same issue here, I will open a ticket.

Regards

Thanks for giving it a try. Maybe it is some limitation with the VirtualBox mouse. I will give it a try on real hardware and post back.

Hello Jochen

Windows 98 runs, but I can not control the mouse.

I just switched dosbox-x.conf that comes on the package to connect to the .img.

Thanks Jochen.

Thanks Jan-Erik your software runs fine to get Red Alert, it is very interesting. I'm only missing the icon in PNG format since I use a "Dynamic Icons" template. (Check image)

Article Discussions / Adding an extra thing to the ArcaOS strategy ?
« on: February 09, 2026, 04:30:47 pm »
Hello

Today I feel like brainstorming, so I'm sorry, and please don't get mad if the idea is not good.

I want to talk to Lewis about adding an additional thing to the ArcaOS strategy. The idea is to start replacing (when possible) IBM OS/2 close source components (binaries, .exe) with open-source alternatives as part of their strategy.

The idea is to embrace, when possible, every little replacement for OS/2’s EXE, DLLs, and even MSG files, etc. in favor of open-source alternatives that does the same, and possible the user will not even notice the difference.  This will be following the idea of Lynn Maxson (ex SCOUG OS/2 member) trying to get each component replaced little by little instead of big changes in architecture.

Yes, Arca Noae are already doing it, they replaced view.exe with newview for exampre, but it is not part of their strategy. The idea will be that if someone comes with a replacement of “bldlevel.exe”, Arca Noae can took the time to evaluate the technical and legal aspects, and if it is approved to be included in ArcaOS.

"Don't fix what it is not broken". The advice is good, but we are still having the dependency on close source that can not be improved. They idea will be to have fully tested replacements so the user doesn’t notice the change, or even get new features.

I think that as a community we can provide suggestions of what to replace, testing of the software and even creating documentation. While some other with higher technical level can even create the little replacements.

Please notice that the idea is to add this extra thing to the Arca Noa strategy, I don’t mean it is the only thing to do, it is just to add something else to what they are already doing.

What do you think? Should we try it?

Applications / EmTec Network Suite 5.0.8a
« on: February 07, 2026, 01:51:20 am »
Hello

I contacted Markus Schmidt from EmTec and he made a recompile of his "EmTec Network Suite".
It has USENET, FTP and Gopher software, now freeware. FTP does not has SSL. Markus told me it can be open sourced if I get permission from Thomas Bradford. I sent him an email, but I'm not sure if he still has that one.

The idea is to test the software a little bit and I will upload it to hobbes as the latest version.

FYI:

The RPM Tickets should be open here: https://github.com/bitwiseworks/rpm-issues

Just as a note, usually users post their issues on users forum to see if other user share the same issue. Once the issue it is confirmed the procedure it is to open a ticket or contact the developer.

Applications / Re: Software Port Requests

Hello Remy.

Looks interesting:
- upnp (The Library): The core C++ framework that handles the networking and protocol logic.
- AIVCtrl: A ready-to-use "Remote Control" application for users. It acts as a GUI to browse servers and play music/videos on networked devices.
- chupnp: A small utility for developers to test the framework’s functionality and explore discovered device actions.
- Google Drive Plugin: An optional module that allows you to treat your Google Drive files as a UPnP media source.

Let me ask around

Hardware / Re: Serial Port Shenanigans - ArcaOS 5.1.1 on a Lenovo M920t
« on: January 29, 2026, 05:26:38 pm »
Hello AmbulatoryCorpse, welcome to the forum.

I always wanted to interact with someone that has more knowledge on OS/2 BBS, since I want to organize the stuff on HobbesArchive:
and
- http://hobbesarchive.com/?path=%2fpub%2fos2%2futil%2fBBS
...and even if it is possible document you journey to serial-model BBS in ArcaOS.

Like Roderick said, type "mode com1" on the command line to see what it shows and let us know.

Your "ThinkCentre M920 Tower" seems to have serial port, and the external USR Sportster 33.6k should work there. It is also interesting that this is the first ArcaOS UEFI installation that I seen with someone trying to make a serial modem to work on it.

Hello

Does anybody knows how to use an Apple I ?? just to see if this emulator works.

http://apple1.chez.com/Apple1project/Emulation/Pom1-0.70b-JAVA.tar.gz

It runs with "java -DECHO="N" -DROMFILE="6502.rom.bin" -cp Pom1.jar pom1.Exec"
, but I'm not sure if it works fine.
