Virtualization / VBox Guest AddOns 7.2.6
« on: Today at 12:33:15 am »
Hello

I updated VirtualBox host (Windows) to version 7.2.6 and updated the extension pack. No issue here, ArcaOS 5.1.1 BIOS keeps booting fine.

But on the guest ArcaOS 5.1.1 I also updated the addons to version 7.2.6.

Now I'm experiencing some issues:
1) The SharedFolder drive is not auto mounting. If I run "vboxcontrol sharedfolder use d: OS2TEMP" (in my case) it will mount.

2)  The worst issue is that the bidirectional Clipboard sharing is no longer working.

Do you suggest something else I may be missing on the configuration?

If someone confirm the same issue here, I will open a ticket.

Article Discussions / Adding an extra thing to the ArcaOS strategy ?
« on: February 09, 2026, 04:30:47 pm »
Hello

Today I feel like brainstorming, so I'm sorry, and please don't get mad if the idea is not good.

I want to talk to Lewis about adding an additional thing to the ArcaOS strategy. The idea is to start replacing (when possible) IBM OS/2 close source components (binaries, .exe) with open-source alternatives as part of their strategy.

The idea is to embrace, when possible, every little replacement for OS/2’s EXE, DLLs, and even MSG files, etc. in favor of open-source alternatives that does the same, and possible the user will not even notice the difference.  This will be following the idea of Lynn Maxson (ex SCOUG OS/2 member) trying to get each component replaced little by little instead of big changes in architecture.

Yes, Arca Noae are already doing it, they replaced view.exe with newview for exampre, but it is not part of their strategy. The idea will be that if someone comes with a replacement of “bldlevel.exe”, Arca Noae can took the time to evaluate the technical and legal aspects, and if it is approved to be included in ArcaOS.

"Don't fix what it is not broken". The advice is good, but we are still having the dependency on close source that can not be improved. They idea will be to have fully tested replacements so the user doesn’t notice the change, or even get new features.

I think that as a community we can provide suggestions of what to replace, testing of the software and even creating documentation. While some other with higher technical level can even create the little replacements.

Please notice that the idea is to add this extra thing to the Arca Noa strategy, I don’t mean it is the only thing to do, it is just to add something else to what they are already doing.

What do you think? Should we try it?

Applications / EmTec Network Suite 5.0.8a
« on: February 07, 2026, 01:51:20 am »
Hello

I contacted Markus Schmidt from EmTec and he made a recompile of his "EmTec Network Suite".
It has USENET, FTP and Gopher software, now freeware. FTP does not has SSL. Markus told me it can be open sourced if I get permission from Thomas Bradford. I sent him an email, but I'm not sure if he still has that one.

The idea is to test the software a little bit and I will upload it to hobbes as the latest version.

Applications / IRIT - Modeling Enviroment
« on: January 19, 2026, 03:54:32 pm »
Hello

This is a little subject I want to share with you. It is not important as far as I can tell, but I want to let it documented just in case.

"IRIT is a freeform geometric modeling environment that allows one to model general freeform surfaces' based models as well as polygonal objects, and use Boolean operations on both."

The IRIT modeling package is free for noncommercial use and it is copyrighted to Gershon Elber. It is not open source under one of the common licenses.

Long time ago (1997), someone ported IRIT 7 and shared the binaries with the source code. I have the source code that contains an OS/2 makefile here: https://github.com/OS2World/APP-GRAPHICS-IRIT

The modern source code is still available (free for noncommercial use) here: https://gershon.cs.technion.ac.il/irit/irit-sm.zip

I got a request to delete the source code since it is old. (Current version is 13)

I have to comply to that, since it is not traditional open source software. I will turn the repository private. I'm just notifying this, just in case someone think there is something useful on the source code OS/2 port.

I don't know how to use IRIT, I just can tell it is a command line tool, but it has some PM app to viewing 3D models (I guess).

Networking / Can not connect to TCP/IP - DHCP Client
« on: December 25, 2025, 06:57:37 pm »
Hello

I have a x64 tablet that only has wifi, so I installed ArcaOS 5.1.1 without network. I added "Null" when it asked me for network devices.

Now I finally got my hands on an USB to Ethernet device with an ASIX chipset.  (ASIX AX88772).
On Network Adapters I added the USBASIX.OS2 driver, added IBM TCP/IP and rebooted.

The USBASIX.OS2 loads at boot, the lights of the USB Ethernet device blinks. But I get no IP on ArcaOS.
TCP/IP Settings are on LAN 0 Enabled and Automatic, using DHCP.
No IP to the router. (192.168.10.1)

DDNS Configuration tells me: MSG07. Configuration Failed: DHCP Client has not been initialized by a DHCP Server.

Any ideas what else can I test to find my issue?

Applications / Reading .BOO online
« on: December 22, 2025, 11:24:39 pm »
Hello

The people at dexvert have a project to read a lot of file formats. I ask them to include the .BOO IBM book format and they updated it and it's supported.

dexvert is used by Discmaster, a web page that stores the content of .ISO CD-ROM files and let you surf inside those.

You can read the .BOO files of the "OS/2 Online Book Collection" CD here:

Applications / OS2VOICE RPM - ...and MMOS2 Updater
« on: November 12, 2025, 11:24:30 pm »
Hello

At Warpstock Roderick formally announced the OS2VOICE RPM. I asked Roderick for a formal email announcement, but I can not wait for more people to try it out.

Visit: https://rpm.os2voice.org/
Include the RPM and WarpIn repository into AN Package Manager.

I want you to give me some feedback about: https://rpm.os2voice.org/warpin/release/ArcaOS_MMOS2updater-1-0-0-01.wpi
I really like it a lot, it installs MPlayer, the MIDI stuff, CODECS very easy and for me it is working great.

« on: November 02, 2025, 03:36:45 pm »
Hello David

Here I have a request. I think we need a new logo for the EDM/2 wiki.  I want to give an idea to Adrian to see if he approves the change.

Here it is the latest logo for reference. Do you think you can please help me out with some ideas. If you can generate the logo in vectorial (SVG) format it will be desirable.

Applications / BrainStorm: Best Classic OS/2 Software
« on: October 16, 2025, 11:18:20 pm »
Hello

This is my typical brainstorm question where there is no right or wrong answers.

The question is: Which OS/2 software that is close source (Shareware, Freeware, Commercial, Abandonware, etc) do you think it is so good we should offer money to the author to open source it ?

Let's do not worry if it can be possible to open source it, or we have or not the money to offer something, just dream away on the brainstorm.

Applications / New Ports Testing
« on: September 15, 2025, 12:50:11 am »
Hello

Tellie was kind enough to port Drawpile 1.0.6 to OS/2.

"Drawpile is a free software collaborative drawing program that allows multiple users to sketch on the same canvas simultaneously. Open Source Software."

Requires Qt5 - "yum install qt5-qtbase qt5-qtmultimedia qt5-qtbase-gui"

Please give it a try and let me know.

Article Discussions / OS/2 Package Boxes - Collection Items
« on: August 26, 2025, 05:28:52 pm »
Hello

I started to create this gallery of OS/2 box packages in the OS2World wiki some time ago. Call it craziness if you want, but I think it will help collectors and general OS/2 fans to know what was out there.

I wanted to document the part number of the packages and if possible trying to list all the content with the part numbers too.

If you want to check it out I think the best way is to surf under this wiki category.
https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:IBM_Product_Package

If you want to help me, if you have an OS/2 box and can share your pictures and list the contents of it with the part numbers, just contact me or post here the pics. I know I'm still missing a lot of languages.

Regards
