Setup & Installation / Re: 5.1 and Samba/can't make it work!
« on: October 13, 2023, 02:00:01 pm »
O.k. Now I understand, Thanks Alex, you put a lot of work in this new version thanks for that also.

 8)

In the next version I'm hoping to make it pre-select one of the already-logged-on credentials in that dropdown, if there are any.  I still need to work out the logic though.  (You can already do this manually from the command line, using e.g. "connect /user:WORKGROUP\alex".)

Another possibly non-obvious feature is that if you set specific credentials for browsing in the Network Browser (under the Network->Authenticate menu - it offers any credentials which are already logged in), it will pre-select that user by default when you connect to a share from within the Browser. (This doesn't apply if connecting outside the Browser, though.)

By the way, I always welcome suggestions for improving the help (both the individual program help or the ArcaMapper Guide). Some of the concepts are admittedly a bit convoluted.

You're only prompted for a login if you leave "New logon" selected for authentication on the connection dialog.

I agree this could be a bit more obvious.

I'm trying to find out if this software runs for you, I get a Japanese error:
- WRUMIN (DBCS-Ruminator) 1.0
- From A.Y.DAYO
- https://www.vector.co.jp/vpack/browse/person/an023499.html
It's Japanese, it translate as:
- DBCS input assistance utility
- Supports DBCS input in overseas-made applications that cannot input DBCS (full-width characters)

Looks like it requires PMNLSSSC.DLL, which is only included in DBCS versions of OS/2.

Programming / Re: shared memory value - Odin win32k or DosQuerySysInfo???

It may be appropriate to point out my memory-reporting tool:
https://github.com/altsan/os2-mem
which also breaks down memory regions when the /v switch is used, although it lacks the ability to identify "unassigned" like Rich's.

One feature it does have, on ArcaOS systems (and possibly also on systems with QSINIT) is the ability to report the full amount of physical RAM, and any PAE-exclusive region available for use as a memory disk, even if OS/2 can't access it as system RAM.

(It's installed by default as mem.exe on all ArcaOS systems.)

Setup & Installation / Re: Adding system components on existing installing

Everything is greyed out accept of samba server. 'IBM File and Print Client' is greyed out and checked; The Folder IBMLAN has only one File IBMLAM.INI.

Evidently your IBMLVL.INI profile thinks File and Print Client is already installed.

In a command prompt, go to <bootdrive>\sys\install and run
Code: [Select]
netinst /debug
The console window should tell you where it's (allegedly) installed to.

If it's not installed there, you may need to delete the IBM_LS -> PATH key from your <bootdrive>\IBMLVL.INI file (using your preferred INI file editor).

If it helps, here's a photo of an old OS/2 Extended Edition v1.1 package and contents...

My library doesn't have good information about this either. Could you take a few more photos?
I'm interested in photos of the following components (with legible text):
–Back side of the box
– Photos of the disk label (P/N information is important to me)

Ideally, I would like to see disk images so that I can make a file-by-file comparison to see if there are any differences with the UK version.
But not all participants have the opportunity/desire to provide disk images, therefore, I will not insist on this request.
However, if you have a copy of the files, I can describe a file-by-file comparison algorithm that does not require effort and painstaking work.

Unfortunately it's no longer in my possession.  I might still have a backup of the files somewhere; let me know about this comparison algorithm of yours and I'll see if I do anything.

IIRC, that error frequently indicates a routing misconfiguration. I think it can also occur if inadvertently trying to configure the same interface with both static and DHCP settings.

Are you using DHCP or static addressing?

Applications / Re: ArcaOS 5.1.0 and cups
« on: September 16, 2023, 03:12:56 pm »
If I recall, you did an upgrade install?

FWIW, the CUPS RPM doesn't install cupslpr.exe, but the ArcaOS installer does that if CUPS is selected during installation.

However, the philosophy of the upgrade install is not to make any non-essential changes to your system configuration -- that includes optional installed components. So if you didn't have CUPS installed before the upgrade, the upgrade won't install it for you.

Applications / Re: Installing VisualAge C++ 3.0 on ArcaOS 5.1.0

As a compiler, 3.65 is generally to be preferred over 3.0. Not only is it a newer iteration of ICC (and has more recent fixes), it supports more recent language features like (like 64-bit integers, as noted).

I suppose you might prefer to use VAC3.0 would be if you need some component that 3.65 lacks or does poorly (ISTR hearing that SOM/WPS programming is better supported in 3.0).  Also, 3.65 doesn't include the IDE from 3.0.

That said, one big point in 3.0's favour is its INF formatted compiler documentation.  3.65 uses the NetQuestion HTML documentation system, which is bloated, intrusive, and in general a pain to use.

FTR, I have both installed but I generally use 3.65 unless a project specifically requires 3.0.

Applications / Re: Sharing drives
« on: September 02, 2023, 07:39:20 pm »
FWIW, there are two separate components in question.

  • ArcaMapper is a client tool that uses components of both Samba and Netdrive to allow ArcaOS to access shares on another computer. It does not allow sharing ArcaOS resources out to other computers. ArcaMapper is not the same thing as Samba, although it makes use of a specialized subset of Samba.
  • Samba (generally referred to in ArcaOS as Samba Server) is an actual port of Samba which does allow sharing of local resources out to other computers. This seems to be the functionality you are asking about.

Both are included with ArcaOS, although Samba Server may not be installed by default depending on the installation personality you chose. (It can be installed after the fact.)

You should have a folder called "ArcaMapper Network Connections" somewhere, probably in your Network folder.

ArcaMapper consist of a whole set of programs and drivers, it isn't a single program and doesn't have a single location on drive. In ArcaOS 5.1, the GUI component of ArcaMapper was replaced with a modular system that is more reminiscent of the old File and Print Client.

Setup & Installation / Re: Multiple installations of AOS?
« on: September 01, 2023, 01:48:42 pm »
Then there is the question of whether I need the Personal or Commercial AOS.  If I, a sole person, write a novel and flog it to a publisher (hey, one can dream), that's commerce, right?  But if AOS helps make a communicable form of the novel from a version previously fashioned in my mind...?

I'm not speaking for Arca Noae, but...

TTBOMK, "commercial" use of software means any of:
  • Using the software as part of running a business (whether incorporated or not)
  • Using the software to directly earn income (e.g. doing consultancy on it, reselling it as part of an integrated product, etc.)
  • Using the software to support an income-generating infrastructure (e.g. using it to develop commercial software, running an income-generating website on it, etc.)

Your novel question gets into fuzzy territory.  If you use word processing software to write a novel, which you then publish and earn income from, that would likely count as commercial use of the word processor.  Anything at a further remove from the activity is more ambiguous IMO.  Does it count as commercial use of the OS you run the word processor on?  (That isn't quite the same as the developing-software example above, because most likely neither the word processor nor the published novel depend on that particular OS to function.)   Commercial use of the computer you run the OS on?  Commercial use of the home where the computer is located?  Commercial use of the electricity you use to power the computer?  I think the answer to all of those is "maybe, but it depends".

Maybe a simple rule of thumb would be to use your local government's definition of what qualifies as a business expense.

Some interesting (though not very conclusive) discussion on the topic.  There isn't really a cut-and-dried answer.

General Discussion / Re: Firefox or Dooble for the OS2World Forum

I generally use whatever browser I have open, on whatever system (OS/2, Linux, or Windows) I happen to be working at.  Most often that's some version or other of Firefox.
