Programming / Re: programming in Java with netbeans
« on: June 13, 2015, 10:22:06 pm »
Hi

It will be interesting to try this and document which is the latest Netbeans that can run on OS/2-eCS with OpenJDK 6.

Here are the old Netbeans archive:
https://netbeans.org/community/releases/old.html

Version 6.9.1 says it requires Java 6. Since version 7 it requires Java 7, I guess Oracle tried to sync the release numbers with Java.

If you have any luck let us know and post the script.

Applications / Re: USBLib (USBCalls, USBResmg, USBJoy) license?
« on: June 12, 2015, 02:14:07 pm »
The way I see it. First of all the first lines of the LICENSE file clearly state:

Thats Wim, I already removed the non .h and IBM copyrighted files from the repository.

Will this mean also that your "USB Resource Manager" (that you already share with source code) should be under "Aladdin Free Public License", or your USBCalls is a different thing and do not uses Markus Montkowski work?

Do you think I can mix your USBCalls.C on the USBLib github repository, or not ?

It does (once again) raise the question of whether header files are copyrightable as often they are just listings of facts, namely the API. The American courts have been looking at this in the Java case between Google and Oracle and at least one Judge, who happens to also be a programmer, ruled that they are not. It may be going to the Supreme Court though the Obama administration is hoping that they are ruled copyrightable. And of course whatever the Americans decide, they will bully everyone else to following.

I think that the answer it is simple for the moment.  Right now, in the US, the answer is no, it can change with the Oracle Vs Google case.

I liked this comment about the subject "Given that the court cases so far have ruled against copyright, it would be very hard to argue willful infringement anywhere. (US)". But Oracle can screw up everything if the US court rule that APIs (and header files defining the APIs) are copyrightable.

Hi.

It seems I got stuck with SOM. I can not find more information to complete the table: http://www.edm2.com/index.php/System_Object_Model#Files

For the moment I'm moving on Workplace Shell:
http://www.edm2.com/index.php/Workplace_Shell

Comments about this subject are welcome. Let me know if you think I'm missing to list files that should be part of WPS on that page.

Thanks for the feedback.

So, I think that most logical thing to do is:

1) Remove the code that is suspected to be from IBM DDK, which says "licensed by IBM"
2) The rest that is left, will remain under Aladdin public license.

Hi Roderick

I forgot to post the link: https://github.com/OS2World/DRV-USBLib

If you do a search you can find the source code that is from IBM: https://github.com/OS2World/DRV-USBLib/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=IBM

It is not much and it is not hard to see which ones are the one that says "IBM Copyright".

I want to see if I should:
a) Remove the source code from github  (if applies).
b) Talk to the original developer (if I can) to see a way to fix the licensing (if applies).
c) Try to divide what can be public and what can not from the source code repository  (if applies).

I can not validate if this source code was part of the IBM DDK (since USB is not located on the 2004 CD), but I can not remember that if the last DDK web pages was the one that provided these source code under the DDK license.

I can not know by looking to the source code if it is from DDK or if it was EWS which are a different license types.

Regards.

Hi Roderick.

This was an experiment I was doing with OS/2. Thanks for your comments (which now seems more constructive), but this is not a project or a thing will go on production, it is an experiment for my home and nobody wants to know what I'm doing (there is no interest), do not worry, be happy.

Please Roderick,  do not contact me in private to tell me that X or Y effort is a waste of time (In your Humble opinion), I'm not asking you to do it, don't take any of my crazy ideas I post personal. This is my hobbie and I choose how to waste my time.

Events / Buy at Amazon and Help WarpStock
« on: June 10, 2015, 07:47:51 pm »
Hi.

There was a formal announcement long time ago, but I think it is a good time to remember the community this topic.

You can help WarpStock (USA)  to raise funds for the event by buying things at Amazon. It will not cost you anything.

1) The only thing you need to do is visit the link:
http://www.amazon.com/ref=as_li_wdgt_ex?&linkCode=wsw&tag=warpstockcorp-20

2) Shop everything from there.

Please, if you have someone on your family or friends that shops a lot at Amazon, please share the link  :)

Hi.

I may be over sensitive since on my last experiment (moving the OS/2 paths) the some opinions was to try to stop me and do not waste time on that. And I needed to pull harder until some more people help me out to finish that experiment.

When I dare to post about my next experiment on a VM, that will really freak some out to a higher level. But I need to complete the EDM/2 Components page first.

Peace :)

Hi Andi B.

I understood from the first day that there is a risk to have back leveled binaries of this drivers and that was not what I was requesting on the first post. I was asking for something experimental, and not for anybody to use under their freee will.

My issue is that the negativism of important people of the community is scaring/stopping people to assist me on my request for help. Please remember that I also need help like anybody on this community, and having people on my back that see only the negative side of what I post is not helping me.

On this case I thanks Andy for helping on this subject.

So, I will like to know if someone is interested to create/build some "test-beta-AS IS- no support - under your own risk" drivers for "screen01, kbdbase, clock01, print01" and turn them freeware for all use. I want to test a "non-IBM" produced drivers on my experimental VM.

Sorry, I keep reading my first post and I don't see the "monstrosity" that can be interpreted that I'm going to put a gun on the OS/2 community to use drivers based on old code.

Maybe some people thinks that releasing a driver as a freeware for all use (individual and commercial) is a crime on these days.

Hi Dave

I already got help and Andy sent me the compiled the drivers that I'm going to test happily on my experimental VM. Sadly I do know have the knowledge to do that myself for the moment.

You'd also maybe get a better reaction from the community if you started a thread "How to compile screen01" or such and it could be an interesting learning experience.
I agree with you on this, but I don't see anything "extreme/intimidating/" on my first post.

What is bursting out my nerves, is that when I ask for something, there are people that do not want to help and just want to discourage you to do anything by saying "it is not a priority" or "why do you want to do that, it is opening a can of worms". Like a told before to everyone, if it does not interest you, if it is not your priority, if you don't have anything to add, you are not forced to reply everything that shows up, just move to the next thread.

It is not like I said on my first post "THIS PROJECT SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1 TO THE COMMUNITY", no. Does it says "I WILL FORCE EVERYONE WITH MY MAGIC POWERS TO USE AN OLDER RELEASE OF THIS DRIVERS" ? no.  :) Let the people have stupid ideas, if you think they are stupid just ignore them, move on and be happy.

Applications / USBLib (USBCalls, USBResmg, USBJoy) license?
« on: June 10, 2015, 02:17:57 am »
Hi

I need to solve this mystery (little mystery). I need to know which is the license (terms of use) of USBLib (USBCalls, USBResmg, USBJoy).

For what I read on netlabs ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/snapshots/usb/usb_20070121.zip the original author is Markus Montkowski and he released it under the "Aladdin Free Public License"

FYI:
Quote
Aladdin Free Public License

The license was derived from the GNU General Public License, but differs on two key points:
- The source code must be included with any software distribution.
- The software may not be sold, including any fees involved with distribution.

From Wikipedia.

But checking the source code under /drivers/ directory there are code that is licensed by IBM. (It does not specify an IBM license, only AS IS).

So, I honestly do not know if the USBLib project should be under "Aladdin Free Public License" the whole package, or it is a project with different licenses.  I want to know if there had been license change with time approved by the author, or other authors by any chance.

Comments are welcome, but please don't ask "why do you want to know this?" it is obviously that I want to know which license applies to this project. I had a discussion some months ago with a community member that told me that it should not be "Aladdin Free Public License" but he failed to explain why.

Roderick.

Change to other thread, discuss your priorities on other thread. This is not a priority, I'm not saying it is. This is my request for an experiment that I'm running that nobody cares and Andy already replied.

Go ahead and move on, enjoy your vacations.

Regards

Hi Ian.

Sorry, but the discussion is shifting away.  screen01, kbdbase, clock01, print01 are important drivers for the platform. The code may be old on the DDK, but it is the only thing we got. There is no way to port "screen01, kbdbase, clock01, print01" from other platforms like it was network drivers.

Again, this is a experimental stuff on a VM that I'm making, I'm not forcing anybody to accept it or use them. But for the moment I take the following from this discussion:

1) There is a taboo about IBM DDK, everybody is scared about a license of use which nobody read.
2) There is a negative force on this forums when someone talks about device driver development and the IBM DDK.
3) We can make "Close source" collaborative projects on netlabs with IBM DDK code, Lars is doing it.
4) Drivers based on IBM DDK code can be turned into "Freeware", that is demonstrated for years on the OS/2 market and community.

I'm still looking for someone to compile screen01, kbdbase, clock01, print01 and send it over to me to experiment. Those drivers are key for OS.

Regards
