Events / Warpstock 2025 USA - The end of my journey with ArcaOS
« on: November 08, 2025, 07:44:19 am »
Translated with Google from nativ German:

ArcaOS is dead to me.

The final nail in the coffin was Lewis's statement about the Wi-Fi driver in the latest Warpstock post. Of course, I knew it was unlikely to be released, but what really mattered was the way he explained and presented it.

The gist of it, as I understand it, is: "Who needs a Wi-Fi driver? We have LAN-to-Wi-Fi solutions, mini routers, etc. So what?"

I call that—excuse my language—pathetic!

ArcaNoae has been working independently on this for almost nine years. Drivers were developed for the eComstation even before that, and they've always pointed out, albeit with decreasing intensity each year, "We hear you, the Wi-Fi driver is on our list, etc., etc." It's perfectly legitimate for you to decide what you develop, but pretending for years about a development that was never seriously intended (there's no other conclusion to be drawn) and will never come to pass is one thing; quite another is that those who hoped for it are now being dismissed in an obsequious manner with a "What do you actually want?" attitude. Brilliant, it doesn't get any better or more customer-oriented than that!

Many laptops no longer even come with a LAN port, meaning that Wi-Fi might mean: USB to LAN to Wi-Fi, i.e., two or three adapters. In principle, this works, but practically speaking, such a solution is utterly worthless for "mobile use." Just try setting something like that up while traveling on a train or plane.

The same old arguments—that there are more important drivers, because the system has to run first before you can even use Wi-Fi—don't help here either. Because without a decent internet connection, I don't need native ArcaOS anyway, and in a VM I'm not interested in all the driver fuss around it.

Ultimately, this type of internet access is obsolete anyway, since there's no current browser for OS/2, and—Dimitry, please forgive me—probably never will be.

I'm just glad I didn't renew the subscription; not another cent is going there.

I'm also very happy with version 5.11 in German on my ASUS ROG Zephyrus. The only possible improvements would be a Wi-Fi driver (0% chance), a Bluetooth driver (0% chance), a decent SNAP graphics driver (0% chance), and—admittedly very specific to this notebook—an enhanced sound driver (0% chance—Paul Smedley has already done a great job here; the sound itself works, but only very quietly, since the six internal speakers are controlled by an additional chip that isn't supported by UNIAUD. But even Linux Mint needed a few kernel revisions before it worked). Likewise, the chances of utilizing more "lower RAM" are exactly 0%, but the 2.4GB available on the Zephyrus is sufficient for the fastest OS/2 I've seen so far. Since I don't have any use for it, I never have more than one memory-intensive application open anyway.

So, for me, ArcaOS is history, OS/2 is definitely dead, but I'll keep ArcaOS looking like OS/2 Warp 3 and 4 running in their current state as long as they still run natively on newer hardware, just for fun.

Otherwise, I can only recommend looking into Linux. To my surprise, I was able to recreate my entire private Windows environment relatively quickly with Linux Mint Cinnamon, and all for free. There's also a large community behind it that can help with almost any problem.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

As announced in the UNIAUD thread I created a video about Paul Smedleys great success so far with bringing Sound on the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 2024 alive.

Thanks Paul!

YOu can watch it here:

I tested 86Box for Windows on ARM 64 on my Surface Pro 11 (Snapdragon CPU) and it runs wonderfull!

I have three complete virtual PCs running at the same time, and do not even have to change the Surface status, it is still in Power Safe Mode.

Almost perfect!! What a fun!!

Hardware / OS/2 on ARM64 CPU - No Problem! - Surface Pro 11
« on: November 24, 2024, 11:17:57 pm »
If you want to follow my notes, how easy it was to install OS/2 in a virtual Machine with 86Box at an ARM64 Device, please read here:

https://www.os2.org/viewtopic.php?t=4197

(German, Online Translator needed)

So, the Thesis: ARM can not emulate/virtualize x86 is proofed to be wrong. ;)

All the best!

Setup & Installation / OS/2 Warp 4 Tutorial on ArcaOS 5.1
« on: October 24, 2024, 08:06:30 pm »
To full fill my attempt of turning ArcaOS 5.1 in OS/2 Warp 4, I try to get the Tutorial to run.

I copied all the necessary files etc. like I did so many times before, beginning with some ( I do not know exactly wich ) Version of ArcaOS the Tutorial does not work as designed.

It creates the Training Folder on the desktop, but instead of showing the application it opens teh help file with the viewer, please see attached picture.

I guess this is the problem: the files must be connected to the viewer in some way.

Is it possible to turn this back for the tutorial program?

What do I have to do to get it up and running?

Thanks in Advance!

I want to install the WSeB Server parts on Top of ArcaOS 5.1, as I did several times before, using the great tool of Alex Taylor.

Unfortunately I missed the point to NOT install Samba/Network parts during the initial ArcaOS Installation. So I do get an error code (I think it is something like X1604, do not have it around yet) when trying to install the WSeB parts.

As I do not want to reinstall everything from scratch (it is a bit of a special installation, what would lead to a lot of work), what components do I have to deinstall, and how, to get the Server Tool from Alex to let it do what it is supposed to do?

Thank you very much for hints!

I will attach a screenshot of the error code in a few hours.

EDIT: added Screenshot

Setup & Installation / How to get rid of the second boot menue?
« on: September 04, 2024, 09:55:25 pm »
I created a second UEFI ArcaOS Type 1 JFS partition to store Data on it. Everything worked as expected, it is visible and usable.

Please see picture one.

But, on every boot, after choosing ArcaOS via rEFInd Boot Manager, the OS/2 Logo appears on the upper left corner, and next some kind of second Boot Menue.

Please see picture two.

As this is some kind of anoying, I would like to get rid of this menu, booting straight into ArcaOS, as it did before I created the partition.

Any ideas?

Help is really appriciated, thank you very much in advance!

Applications / WSeB Pictures for Martin
« on: March 26, 2024, 06:20:42 pm »
Hi Martin,

I noticed missing WSeB Pictures at your Wiki. I can offer you here (as far as I can see you already have pictures of the WSeB CD Set) :

- Pictures of the WSeB Box, English, Upgrade - PN: 31L1710
including Picture of the HPFS386 License - PN: 41L0427

- Pictures of the WSeB Preview, English - PN: ?

- Pictures of the WSeB Convinience Package I - 4.51 - Deutsch (German) - PN: ?

You can manipulate, publish, use these pictures in all the way you like.

Hope the Quality is OK for you as it is a bit difficult to take a picture of this mirroring and reflecting CDs.

Just to open a seperate topic on this: As I mentioned here:

https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,3537.msg42909.html#msg42909

the ArcaOS UEFI Bootmanager is very small on some devices, due to the Screen Resolution - on my Z13 Gen 2 the boot screen displays 2.880 by 1.800 Pixels.

At our User Meeting in Cologne 2022 Keith Merrington showed up with the rEFInd Bootmanager. This is really a great software! It is very customizable (Screen Resolutions, Backgrounds, Icons and so on) and looks therefore very modern.

I just attach my pictures from the other Thread here again.

In my case I have to disable Secureboot but to activate Pluton/TPM in BIOS to have the result I wanted, Windows 11 Pro and ArcaOS side by side. Next is to add Linux Mint Cinnamon. I added customized symbols for this.

Some Links:

rEFInd can be downloaded here:  https://sourceforge.net/projects/refind/

All the information one need and troubleshooting can be find here: https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/ - really a marvelous page!

Best of all: it is free of charge!

All the best!
