Programming / IBM APL2 for OS/2
« on: January 26, 2024, 01:48:27 am »
I recently obtained a copy of IBM APL2 for OS/2

The previous owner gave me a load of books, magazines and notes on APL. (see photos)

If any APL enthusiast wants these, let me know. I'm in the Santa Cruz, California.

Applications / Running Converseen
« on: October 22, 2023, 03:18:26 am »
I saw Tellie has made a port called Converseen, which looked like it could convert those HEIC files that the iPhone creates when you take a picture. I love PMView, but it doesn't support that format.

Unfortunately, I can't get it to run.

The readme.os2 instructs me to use yum

yum install libraw

Yum fails, but helpfully suggests installing LibRaw.

yum install libzip

Yum fails here, but does not make any suggestion.

At this point converseen does not have the needed libraries, and fails with SYS0002: The system cannot find the file specified. "RAW_R23"

Interestingly, PMDLL cannot make anything of converseen.exe. It puts up "Building tree", but never any other information.

I'm using netlabs-rel repository.

Networking / Samba Users and Groups
« on: October 17, 2023, 04:51:49 am »
I'm running Samba server for OS/2 on ArcaOS 5.1. I am trying to understand how Users and Groups work, and also how the kLibc User Manager works along with Samba.

When ArcaOS 5.1 installs Samba, it makes a user named User, and password is Password. It also makes a password for the user I named during the install, Warp30. I don't know the password for this user, either.

The first time running Simple Samba Configuration Center (SSCC), the icon has the parameter /install. After that, the parameter is changed to /config. I'm not sure what actions /install takes. It takes a root password at that time.

It would be nice to be able to snapshot the users and groups, so that I could preserve a working set. It's too easy to make Samba stop functioning.

Ironically, I made a presentation on Samba at Warpstock 2015. I'm not sure how to get good information on the topic. I've somehow preserved my one working set of users since then, but I don't really understand in depth how to maintain users and groups.

Applications / Drag and drop printing
« on: September 14, 2023, 12:42:35 am »
So, if I have a group of Lotus WordPro files selected, and I drag them to a printer, they print. But they don't seem to print in the order they were in the folder.

If a group of files are dropped on a printer, what determines the order in which the files will print?

Applications / Registry editor

I'm using \OS2\SYSTEM\REGEDIT2.EXE. If I open the HINI_USER_PROFILE, then all is well. But if I open the OS2.INI file on another drive, then the REGEDIT2 closes with a new entry created in POPUPLOG.OS2.

I can recreate this by accessing the same INI file using REXX function SysIni, although the exception location is different.

Programming / Where does OS/2 store the screen resolution?
« on: June 23, 2023, 06:26:36 pm »
I'm interested in knowing the screen resolution that OS/2 will use. The program needs to read the information from disk for a volume that is not currently booted, for example, if the computer is booted from CD, but wants to show the resolution that a disk volume will use if it is booted.

Applications / Rsync and eaclean
« on: March 31, 2023, 01:53:25 am »
I keep my data on a single JFS drive, including my PMMail test mailstore, which has over 1 million messages. I back up this drive (2 TB) to several other drives on other computers using Rsync in client/server mode.

Due to a drive failure on my main computer, I had to use Rsync to transfer the entire drive, which took 30 hours. This seemed long to me, so I experimented with things and found that the PMMail mailstore was taking most of the time. Not only that, but the server was so loaded down that I could not use it.

Further experimentation showed me that it was the Extended Attribute (EA) processing that was taking so long. I used eaclean, by David Azarewicz to remove the EA from my mailstore message files and the time to transfer the mailstore using rsync changed from 9 hours to 45 minutes. The server was no longer impacted and the user interface ran normally.

You can obtain eaclean from David's Software Download Center

https://88watts.net/software.html

eaclean was able to remove unnecessary EA over one million files in a few minutes.

Applications / Thunderbird hang
« on: February 13, 2023, 04:09:57 am »
Someone suggested this experiment, and I tried it. I configured Thunderbird to not check for new mail. Then I opened Thunderbird and left it open, but doing nothing. With the build of Thunderbird in ArcaOS 5.0.7, dated March 23, 2020, the computer will hang after three or four days. By hang I mean no response to mouse or keyboard input, no response to network.

With the thunderbird-45.8.0.en-US-i686-06-06-22.os2.zip  build, dated June 6, 2022, no hang occurs even after eight days.

Utilities / dmidecode and UEFI
« on: November 24, 2022, 08:44:39 pm »
When we look at hardware, one of the tools we use is dmidecode.exe (version 2.12) This tool displays a wealth of information about the system, and we use it to fill out hardware reports for the wiki.

https://www.os2world.com/wiki/index.php/Extracting_Hardware_Information_from_ArcaOS_and_OS/2

With UEFI support coming in ArcaOS 5.1, our port of dmidecode isn't working any more. We need dmidecode v3, apparently, which uses the UEFI to display the system information. I'm curious to know if anyone has looked into what would be required to port dmidecode v3.

Hardware / Turn off Laptop Display
« on: October 17, 2022, 10:29:36 pm »
I'd like to turn off the laptop display. Actually the screen saver ought to do it, but it doesn't.

Is there any way to turn off the display. Can it be turned on again later?

Test machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad T450s, in case it matters.

Applications / printing from Lotus SmartSuite WordPro
« on: October 10, 2022, 01:10:54 am »
I'm looking at a computer that has a bit of trouble printing from Lotus SmartSuite Word Pro. I ask for three copies, collated, but none at all come out.

On a nearly identical computer and printer, it works perfectly. I can't get at the failing machine, so I'm attaching testlog of the machine that works.

I'm not really expecting an easy answer, but I'd appreciate advice about solving printing problems like this. I'm actually kind of expecting that it is significant that it is WordPro trying to print. It's a short document with an image or two, and the spool file is 50 megabytes.

It seems to take a long time for copies to print. And yet, on my regular desktop machine, printing starts in a second or two.

Multimedia / recommendation for KVM
« on: September 23, 2022, 06:04:11 pm »
KVM stands for “Keyboard, Video (monitor), Mouse.” The main function of a KVM switch is to control, switch between, and manage multiple PCs or servers via a single keyboard, monitor and mouse (also referred to as the 'console').

I also share audio. I use an analog VGA KVM today, but I'd like to upgrade to a digital 4K monitor. An HDMI KVM sounds attractive. Has anyone got one that they like?

Does HDMI audio work in uniaud?

Applications / New builds of Thunderbird and SeaMonkey
« on: June 09, 2022, 04:28:47 pm »
I see the posting of new builds for Mozilla apps. The prerequisite list looks shorter now. What compiler was used to make the new builds?

(Thanks Dave Yeo, for supporting us with these new builds.)

Setup & Installation / Lock in place hides a printer
« on: June 03, 2022, 07:11:38 pm »
This is a bit of Workplace shell weirdness. I have a printers folder with 8 printer objects in it. The window is neatly sized to show all 8 printers in a 2 x 4 grid.

I created shadows of 4 of the printer objects on the desktop. So far, so good.

I then checked "Lock in place" for the 4 shadowed objects on the desktop. When I open the printers folder, all the icons are gone.

(After a little investigation, I see that if I make the printers folder very large, some of the printer show up. By very large, I mean bigger than the desktop.)

Applications / Password manager
« on: May 31, 2022, 06:02:47 pm »
Password managers are a good thing. But now we need them to work on our computers, phones, tablets, watches, etc. Is there any solution for ArcaOS users?

Some password managers are open-source? Can any of them be (easily) ported?
