For everyone using the (lousy) OS/2 DHCP client (dynamic IP address served by a DHCP server instead of static address), you need to add this line to %ETC%\dhcpcd.cfg:

ifconfig_options "mtu 1492 -trailers"

Adjust to your needs. "-trailers" promises some speed improvement, I don't know if that helps.

Is this equivalent to:
option 34 on
or
option 34 off
?

Setup & Installation / Re: RAM disk and temp folders...what else?
« on: May 14, 2018, 04:53:48 am »
I made speed tests on my new current AM4 system with ArcaOS 5.0.2. I copied three files with together 550 MB with Larsen Commander which shows the average speed in MB/sec, SSD is JFS, RamDisk HPFS:

SSD -> SSD: 142 MB/sec
SSD -> RamDisk: 235 MB/sec
RamDisk -> RamDisk: 390 MB/sec

Anyway, the main benefit will be sparing the SSD with its limited write cycles.

To save the write cycles on my SSD, in Mozilla browsers I set:
browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
so that it writes to my RamDisk.  I also set the swappath in config.sys to use the RamDisk as it gets recreated at every boot.  I also set the temp, tmp, tmpdir to all be on the RamDisk for the same reason.

Yes, wptools is a very useful and important software for OS/2. The Assocedit program is very important to make the right default program associations (double clicking to data files).
<snip>
I have described theses programs on my Homepage:

I see on your homepage you point to an older version of assocedit... I made a couple small updates to it a few years ago:

Hardware / Re: Lenovo External Monitor
« on: May 10, 2018, 01:44:56 am »
If it is like my W530, it will only give the option for external monitor when the Nvidia video is selected in the BIOS.  Of course, then, the screen resolution options are really poor here.

My T420 BIOS:
Config - Keyboard/Mouse - Touch Pad [Disabled]

Right above Touch Pad - TrackPoint [Enabled]

I didn't use ramdisk.ifs much because it used otherwise valuable memory.  With the ramdisk in AOS, I have a 20MB ramdisk used from otherwise unused memory.  I have my swappath set to it as well as temp and Mozilla temp space.  My primary reason for using it for these is to limit writes to my SSD.

I generally just use the command line:
format x: /fs:fat32
pmformat also works for GUI.

That error has been there since a database crash a few months ago.

If booting with IFX still hangs, please try something for me...
with ifx in the config.sys, please start the boot process and when it gets to the point that you see chkdsk kicking off, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del which should kick off a reboot and then let it just go through the boot process and see if it still hangs at ifx.
I've seen it stopped where the last line was that IFX was running and the above got past it, in my case I do not think it was ifx that was the culprit but this test may let us know if we are seeing related issues or not.

Applications / Re: SDL on the Netlabs RPM Repository

All that really needs to be done is to change (or add to) the new packages "replaces" line so that it points to the lower case.  I haven't looked at the spec file, but either it does not show that it replaces anything or it shows it replaces SDL vs. sdl.

Storage / Re: Extended Attributes - OS/2 only thing?

There are Linux filesystems that support 64KBs of EAs or more, the obvious example being JFS, which is what I usually use on Linux (except /boot where I stick with ext3 as grub has had problems reading JFS) as it is considered one of the best all around file systems. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JFS_%28file_system%29#JFS_in_Linux
EAs do have to be enabled in the kernel and mounted correctly to support them.
On Win NT, EAs have always been supported by some file systems, first HPFS and then NTFS, which has one stream purposely to support EAs (uses codepages rather then unicode IIRC). I'd assume the support is still there in the latest versions but don't really know.

I don't know that EA support is still in Windows but there is a good chance as Windows used EAs in one way that was the same as OS/2, in the printer subsystem and there is a reasonable chance they have not changed that.

You put my HLT driver up on github... I had never written a driver so I used the HelloWorld driver to build it.

I have only tried one video that I had had issues with and it worked.  However, the menu bar is changed.  The menu items appear to be highlighted (for want of a better term) such that I just see grey boxes unless I run the mouse over them and then I can see the words.

That's strange. Do you have layout.frame_rate set to something besides zero? I see something similar in the profile manager where the person icon doesn't display until I mouse over them but once my profile loads, things are fine.
I did revert menu.css to the version from 38ESR to try to fix the menu check icon, see https://github.com/bitwiseworks/mozilla-os2/issues/252
I use layout_frame_rate set to 59 or 60 (have used both with the same results with the menu bar).  The menu items are only visible while the mouse hovers over the specific item and then it goes grey again after removing the mouse (unless the menu bar is dropped down and then it stays while the menu is open).
When I get a chance, I'll look at the menu.css and see if something stands out.
Somehow, I had gotten switched to Metal Lion SeaMonkey theme... I don't remember doing it but must have been playing with it at some point, Seamonkey Default Theme works fine.
