Virtualization / ArcaOS 5.1 on Apple Silicone
« on: May 16, 2024, 01:15:59 pm »

I've been away from ArcaOS for a while, although I'd occasionally take a look here to see how things are giong. Anyway, I've been meaning to get back into it for a while as it always drags me back into its orbit when I've been away too long ;)

I'm looking at buying a 5.1 license (upgrade from 5.0) and wondered whether anyone had got that working on the UTM in Intel emulation mode on an Apple Silicone Mac? UTM is effectively QEMU with a pretty front end plus a few extra bits.

My laptop is a MBP M3 if that has any bearing. A bit of a beast so the emulation should be zippy enough I think, assuming I can get it running.

If not I'll get it set up under VirtualBox on my Intel Linux laptop instead, so all is not lost.

A couple of questions:

1) for an ArcaOS installation in VirtualBox (64-bit OS X host), which git-all package should I use - there seem to be several with very similar version numbers.

2) I need to set up ssh so that I can create keys to communicate with my gitlab repos. However, unlike with Linux and OS X where ssh is baked in, I am not sure how to set this up under ArcaOS? I'd also be very grateful for any advice on what are the best client tools currently available.

Many thanks.  :)

Applications / ArcaOS - Dell Inspiron 1300
« on: May 19, 2017, 03:36:30 pm »

Having almost managed to get ArcaOS working completely on VirtualBox, I now have almost got it working on real hardware. So close...

Has anyone managed to get the Broadcom BCM4401 driver working with ArcaOS?  I just installed on an old Dell Inspiron 1300 and everything appears to work bar the networking.

I tried plugging it in straight into the back of the router, but no joy.   Any thoughts on how to proceed would be welcome. Thanks.

Applications / ArcaOS - program compatibility list
« on: May 18, 2017, 01:50:08 pm »
Hi Martin, I thought it might be useful to list any apps that we know work / don't work with ArcaOS 5.0? Please move / merge this with another thread if you have already got a similar discussion going recently.

So to start, these work (superficial testing):

  • VisPro/Rexx Gold 3.1.1  (db elements not tested)
  • VX-REXX 2.1d (db elements not tested)
  • Visual Prolog 5.1 Community Edition (I only installed the OS/2 elements)

I have a few more apps to install today, will update this list as and when I have done so. Please feel free to add your own findings.

Applications / ArcaOS 5.0 on VirtualBox
« on: May 17, 2017, 04:06:15 pm »
I wondered whether anyone who has successfully installed ArcaOS on VirtualBox could provide the settings that they used here?  I could not see this in the Arca wiki

I am getting loads of errors on boot to do with drivers being ignored in CONFIG.SYS as they were not loaded.

Before I restart the installation process, I'd be grateful for the following info:

  • Sound card , both in the VBox settings and in the ArcaOS installer - I picked Universal in ArcaOS and SB16 in VBox, this failed - I got a message about the uniaud32 driver failing and the UNIAUD16.SYS not being loaded
  • which of the USB controllers options to pick in the ArcaOS installer (I picked all first time and had loads of errors, eg USBEHCD.SYS not loaded)*
  • In the VBox settings, how much RAM and storage (I initially set this to 256Mb and 4GB respectively), but I see in the Wiki that Firefox wants 2GB RAM and 8GB Storage.  Seems a lot?
  • What Mouse/keyboard types to choose? USB or PS/2 - I can't recall the intaller options off the top of my head right now
  • C:\OS2\MDOS\VCOM.SYS is also ignored ?
  • As is PSCOM.SYS (I forgot to note the source folder)
  • Anything else you can think of

* Speaking of USB - does ArcaOS support USB in VBox - do the OS/2 guest additions need to be installed, are these even compatible with ArcaOS?

On the positive side:
  • the DANI drivers appear to work without issues
  • Graphics - I assumed SNAP and this works very nicely

VirtualBox Version: 5.1.22 r115126 (Qt5.6.2)

Any help most welcome!

Along with the Dell mini 1012 that I was given by my in-laws came a venerable Dell desktop (venerable indeed, it uses PS/2 keyboard and mouse!)

Spec wise I think it would suit eCS well (dual core Celeron, 2GB of RAM, 40GB hard drive), so I had a go at installing eCS 1.2R on that after cleaning out the internals of the copious cobwebs and dust.   It currently has XP on it and I ran a full checkdisk using that - all came back fine

However, when I get to the eCS Create Volume step in the setup, it keeps reporting a corrupt partition 0 and won't let me do any changes, i.e. I cannot create Boot Manager, cannot rewrite MBR, cannot add a new volume

I can boot back into XP and again no errors reported using checkdisk.

I had the same problem with an old Dell laptop a few months back - ran XP fine, Linux installed fine if sluggish, but eCS complained of an error in partition 0

Is this a known eCS 1.2R bug? Is it fixed in 2.1 or is there a way around it? Would a bootable DFSee be the way to go - is there some step I need to do to make a hard drive eCS friendly?  I don't recall any such thing when I last used eCS several years ago, but it could be that I've forgotten

Any advice gratefully received, otherwise Linux will be going on there instead!

PS - I don't get this error when installing under VirtualBox, it only seems to be with real hardware

Setup & Installation / Dell mini 1012
« on: October 25, 2014, 07:09:50 pm »
I've just been given an old Dell Inspiron mini 1012 laptop. I was wondering whether anyone had had any chance installing eCS on one of these and if so what the procedure is as it has no CD drive. Does an external CD drive work at boot time?

Many thanks for any help.

Marketplace / Wanted: ObjectVision 2.0 for OS/2 (not the Windows version)
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:54:58 am »

I asked this in another thread but I thought it best to have a marketplace request too. If anyone has a copy of Borland's ObjectVision 2 that they would be willing to part with, please get in touch.

I'm looking for the OS/2 version, not the Windows version.  I now have the latter (including a CD version which I got from eBay for £1.50!) but I'd like a native version as this can be scripted with rexx unlike the Windows version

I wonder whether anyone has seen this behaviour with containers in VisPro Rexx:

I have a container (details view) within a notebook page.  I can load up data into it no problem.  However, no matter which row I select, the VpGetItemValue (using index) always returns me the last row's values, even though the index returned does change as I click through the rows .

The container has a symbol of CNT_CGI and I have an Edit button who's When Clicked/Selected event code is as follows (this is test code to just show some message boxes: I have commented out the fuller version but the same bug of the last row's values returned persists):

Code: [Select]
Arg window self

/* Get index of selected item */
index = VpGetIndex(window, 'CNT_CGI', 'SELECTED', 0)

if index = 0 then
    response = VpMessageBox(window, 'Error', 'No CGI item was selected')
else do
    value = VpGetItemValue(window, 'CNT_CGI', index)

    cgiName = value.1
    message = 'You selected the' cgiName 'CGI entry'
    response = VpMessageBox(window, index, message)

value = ''
index = 0

The initial VpGetIndex() call seems to work as when I click through entries, the 'index' variable is shown to change and returns consistent values for the rows I click on (eg if row 1 is 1234567 and row 2 is 567879, I always get 1234567 for row 1 and always get 56789 for row 2)

But the cgiName value is always the last row's value

The problem seems to be with the subsequent VpGetItemValue() call.  For some reason it seems to disregard the value of index.

Any ideas?

PS - I tried using a list box as thses use the same methods, and it works fine for those (ie always returns me the correct row's single value).

General Discussion / 1.2R vs 2.1
« on: October 09, 2014, 08:43:51 pm »

Is there a list somewhere of all the changes since 1.2R up to 2.1?

I'm trying to decide whether the £90 asking price is worth it given that there may not be any further updates.

I must say I've really caught the eComStation bug again since installing it the other day!

Applications / My lost apps...
« on: October 09, 2014, 11:44:32 am »
Digging through old backup CDs, I found screenshots of some apps I built for eCS in the early 2000s. Alas, no source code remains and I only have the executable for one of them (also on hobbes)

All apps were built using VisPro Rexx.

Felix/2, a simple file manager. From memory this never got very far beyond basic file operations (copy, move delete)

QLayConfig/2 to manage the QLay Sinclair QL emulator config file (QLay is a DOS based emulator that runs very well under OS/2). The executable is available from hobbes

Admin Tool for Web/2 to manage the Web/2 webserver config files. I'd completely forgotten about this one! :)  I am quite annoyed about losing the source code for this as it seems pretty feature complete but I never got around to uploading it to hobbes (or if I did, I cannot find it there)

Actually, I may have a pop at re-creating the Web/2 admin tool  as a nice little project to re-learn VisPro Rexx

Programming / ObjectVision

I don't suppose that Borland ObjectVision 2 for OS/2 is available for download anywhere?   I've just found some OV files on a floppy disk that I must written in the 1990s but I can't for the life of me remember what they relate to!

Programming / VisPro Rexx printed manual
« on: September 10, 2014, 04:38:46 pm »
Hi there,

If anyone has a printed copy of the VisPro Rexx manual that they would like to donate or sell at a reasonable price (inc postage to the UK), could you let me know?

I have the manuals as inf files but I prefer to use books on the whole.  I know that the manual is probably out of date compared to the last released version but that would still be fine. It's mainly the overall approach/architecture and workflow I want to remember. As far as I can remember, I never had printed manuals, just an electronic download direct from hockware.

I have some app ideas I'd like to try out and it's been a while since I've used either eCS or VisPro so I need to do some bedtime reading to refresh my mind

Alas, I've lost all my old Vispro source files for the programs I wrote years ago. I notice one of the program binaries is still on hobbes though so that was fun to find!

Web applications / Web/2 and PHP5
« on: September 10, 2014, 04:23:28 pm »
Firstly, hello everyone.  I've been following these forums for years (I believe that I may have had another login at some point in the dim and distant past but I've no idea whether I posted or not)

I used to be a major OS/2 and eCS fan until the delights of OS X drew me away. (Sorry! :) )

I recently got a major nostalgia rush and decided to install eCS (1.2MR) on an old Dell laptop. Well, eCS installed but I could not get networking to work at all so I had to abandon that. I have however managed to install it onto VirtualBox and all is working nicely.

Now, I'd like to get Web/2 (WEB2BETA4 file from hobbes) and PHP (php5.exe CGI version from Paul Smedley's site) working together

I know that this should work - others seem to have succeeded and I remember that the last time I had eCS installed I had the same setup working (with PHP4 at the time)

I have copied the php.exe file into the cgi-bin folder and written a very basic test file, phpinfo.php that I have popped into the html folder:

Code: [Select]

However, when I open the file in either Netscape or Mozilla (I have not got around to getting Firefox installed - that's another story! ) nothing happens: Mozilla reloads the current page (directory listing) immediately, whilst Netscape states that there was an empty response.

When I place Web/2's sample cgi examples into the two folders, these work fine.

Anyone got any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help :)
