Hardware / Re: ArcaOS 5.1 UEFI support - GOP?
« on: Today at 01:07:55 am »
Rich explained it better. Anyway in Arcaos 5.1 beta the bass video handler dll bvhsvga.dll has been replaced by bvhefi.dll for uefi boit. The uefi loader provides an extremely minimal video bios. And vsvga.sys for dos sessiobs is replaced by vefi.sys.

All this info you can find in youtube presentations from alex taylor he did for warpstock europe.

Its not any statements against anybody or OS/4. You should not recommend to swap key system files to get an application to work. I think we should rather start to learn how to analyze the issue at hand and see if we can fix possibly. If you put an old version of PMMERGE.DLL, what can then be broken ?

What can we do with popuplog.os2 Entry ? How can we analyse a crash and see if we can fix it actually. Sometimes the exceptq.log provides SOME information so you can see what goes wrong. But since popuplog.os2 has registers. How can you analyse this ? If we could learn that togheter we can help possibly BETTER analyse crashes for people as team. BTW That is not always easy, but if we can learn it to an extend...

I tried to load this version on ArcaOS 5.0.7.
https://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/apps/misc/AHD_Patch_2-02.zip
It opens but no crash occurs. Anyway I would need your popuplog.os2 entry. And if that does not work maybe procdump can help to figure out WHY its crashing. You could load that up in PMDF and with the PMMERGE.SYM file give a hint why its crashing.
Its not easy but it could give a hint.

Hi all, when trying to run the good old American Heritage Dictionary (published by DUX) on ArcaOS 5.0.7, I get a SYS3175 with PMMERGE.DLL, the app does not start. Googling for that error gives many results with people mentioning similar problems. There are also patched versions of PMMERGE.DLL but all much older than the current ArcaOS version, that may or may not have integrated this patched version. IIRC this problem happened with eCS too but not with the original Warp 4.

Was there a known solution / workaround to be able to start such programs on current versions of the OS?

From my perspective this way of fixing stuff is the same as throwing mutt at the wall and see if it sticks.
I think everybody is putting Glenn on the wrong foot to make him replace pmmerge.dll. It might fix the crash the but nobody even knows why the crash occurs in the first place. So if you backlevel the last version of pmmerge.dll with an older one. The program might start to work, but then what is broken ?
I mean its all well intended but what is causing the crash in the first place ? PMMERGE.DLL is pretty important system dll and not something that should just be swapped out like spare tire from the trunk of your car.

Glenn can you put back the original version of pmmerge.dll and run the program ? Post the popuplog.os2 entry and then I might be able to tell why it crashes. Maybe a font that is installed ? I have no clue but then we MIGHT be able to trace why it crashes.

Gop is supported yes.

If it's a crash in PMMERGE.DLL, have you tried the OS/4 team's patched PMMERGE.DLL?

Obviously it won't be supported by Arca Noae in any way, so backup your current .DLL first!

http://os4.team/os4/pmmerge/pmmerge6111.zip

Where is listed what it fixes ?

Setup & Installation / Re: UEFI Boot Manager for 5.1
« on: May 18, 2022, 08:29:39 am »
Hi

I have a related doubt here. From what I understand on GPT partitioned HDD, AiR-BOOT will no longer work. AiR-BOOT is only for MBR, right? or did I get it wrong?

Regards
AIRBoot also depends on the BIOS (CSM) to be present on an MBR boot with UEFI airboot will also not work. I am also not certain how well MBR/UEFI boot is supported by other operating systems.

Is AN going to provide a UEFI capable boot manager with the upcoming 5.1 release?  While one of my ArcaOS/Linux computers will continue using GRUB 2, I have another computer where I would like to boot into two different GUID ArcaOS system partitions.

Being on the testteam of Arca Noae for ArcaOS 5.1. and seen Alex Taylor his presentation off ArcOS 5.1. I can say the following.
You can install ArcaOS on an MBR disk layout with UEFI boot. But this is approach has a lot technicall drawbacks. MBR I consider dead with all the limitations. It has GPT support and any dual boot with Windows 10/11 will require GPT support because WIndows 10, when installed on system booted in UEFI mode, Windows will only accept GPT disc layout.  If you have a current installation with Windows 10/7 with an MBR disc layout that can remain in that way.

With the arrival of GPT support a lot of old problems are wiped out for OS/2 users finally. And one of them is that you can basically use any disc editor on hard drive or any boot manager. And a bootmanager on UEFI is nothing special. Its  a menu that tells which OS you want to start. This means that old issue's with bootmanager no longer apply. No more primary partition needed and Airboot is also gone.

On a GPT hard drive you have a so called ESP partition. Every partition has its on so called GUID ID, which means that each partition has its own type. The ESP partition is a special type and ArcaOS or Windows puts its EFI file on this partition.  And via a UEFI bootmanager you select simply which EFI file gets loaded.  The AN bootmanager is called AN launcher.

If you have such an issue I think its best if you open a ticket at Arca Noae on mantis.arcanoae.com. This will require you to upload a testlog. Do not backlevel pmmerge.dll to an older version as that will introduce other issue's.

If you are lucky then based on the popuplog.os2 entry and with the SYM file of pmmerge.dll somebody might be able to determine what function it crashes it. That might give a hint. But this trick does not always work.

The Dooble RPM file has been released. This is preview. It in rpm.netlabs.org when I write this and it will be moved from th EXP repo to the normal user repo Stable repo. This is what is normally active in ANPM (Arca Noae Package Manager).

Readme is attached for some more information.

Hey guys,

I'm many have read posts of a build of dooble existing and is waiting on an rpm.

I couldn't understand why a zip wasn't being provided, so I spent a little bit of time this morning building it myself, the result is https://smedley.id.au/tmp/dooble-2022.04.04-os2-20220424.zip

Note I've had the browser close on me a few times, no idea yet if these are dooble or Qt5 related. There is nothing in popuplog.os2  not in the exceptq folder

I have exceptq logs in \var\log\app\

edit: I would like to add that this wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for the work that Dmitry has put into the port of Qt5.

Enjoy!

Cheers,

Paul

The rpm for dooble is now on rpm. Netlabs. Org exp and will be moved to
production as we speak.

The rpm was created so all depencies are done correctly.

Hi Dmitry,

Glad to hear you made it  out of Russia and that you're safe.

I appreciate your post  and update. My comment about 'doesn't smell right' was specifically in relation to Roderick's last update, where he implies that 'others' were behind the switch to Dooble -  you now seems to have confirmed that you/bww chose  to switch to Dooble.  I'm not sure why Roderick was so unclear. Or perhapsI misread and the development is done by bww and the rpm  by  volunteers?

In relation to "updates having «little to do with the browser»."  I'm clearly not talking about toolchain updates - there have been plenty of non-toolchain updates in recent bww updates (libusb, libuvc as examples  from the most recent bww update).

The fundamental issue is the lack of transparency.  Why not be clear  where things stand? If you read Roderick's post, the browser has been coming in a few weeks for what seems like years  now.  Your post actually sets out some of the technical limitations blocking progress.

Cheers,

Paul

A lot of the reasons for the delay and some of these technicall blocking limitations where described in the browser updates on https://articles.os2voice.org did you read these over time ?

The Dooble browser was compiled by Elbert Pol orginally. After Dmitry had to get out of Russia I talked to Dmitry via Telegram app to consider doing a RPM file for the Dooble Browser. Gregg Young started working on the RPM package. The text of the last posting I send out was not clear., but the Dooble RPM was discussed with Dmitry. At the time the message was send out it was unclear WHEN Dmitry would be able to do ANY work on Otter or OS/2 even...

He is currently (as time permits) working on the Dooble RPM package. As everbody now understands he a lot of stuff to deal with after he left Russia.
