Its not any statements against anybody or OS/4. You should not recommend to swap key system files to get an application to work. I think we should rather start to learn how to analyze the issue at hand and see if we can fix possibly. If you put an old version of PMMERGE.DLL, what can then be broken ?

That's my fault and I apologize. I saw mention that the trap was happening in PMMERGE.DLL and I remembered that the OS/4 team had squashed some bugs in that, so I figured it was worth a shot to try.

Hardware / Re: ArcaOS 5.1 UEFI support - GOP?
« on: May 24, 2022, 08:58:04 pm »
I'm curious why UEFI GOP would be of any interest unless you plan to write or run a UEFI Boot Services app. Once you enter the runtime environment (i.e. the OS/2 kernel takes over), all that remains is the GOP-created framebuffer. And that is something you can't (or at least, shouldn't) touch because it's the basis of 5.1's VESA-emulation "video driver". Lacking any code to manipulate the video hardware itself, the driver relies on the bootloader to set the video resolution and mode while in Boot Services, then uses the pre-configured framebuffer for its operations.

Mainly because the bhyve hypervisor in FreeBSD (and its derivatives) and also Joyent's SmartOS/SmartDC products use GOP for their VNC support for graphics support. Anything else is serial(-port) console only. I believe in FreeBSD -CURRENT they now have CSM VNC support using traditional VGA emulation, but I don't believe that's made it to real releases yet.

Hardware / ArcaOS 5.1 UEFI support - GOP?
« on: May 24, 2022, 07:54:02 am »
I have support so I was going to ask this in Mantis, but the ArcaNoae Wiki makes it sound like Mantis should only be used for bugs and not questions.

Since I'm not on the testing team, I'm curious if the upcoming 5.1 UEFI support includes the UEFI "GOP" (Graphics Output Protocol) support? I know there is some sort of NDA, so if the answer is "we/I can't say", then I understand. The "VGA services" part of https://www.arcanoae.com/uefi-support-in-arcaos-5-1-update-for-february-2022/ makes it sound like "yes", but I couldn't find any Arca Noae UEFI page anywhere that explicitly says GOP (or at least Google couldn't!).

If it's a crash in PMMERGE.DLL, have you tried the OS/4 team's patched PMMERGE.DLL?

Obviously it won't be supported by Arca Noae in any way, so backup your current .DLL first!

Programming / Re: Desktop Apps from JavaScript - Electron?

Dooble is Chromium based, so Blink or Webkit and V8 are available. What we would need is a framework. Looking quickly I don't see what

Duh, brainfart. I knew it used Qt WebEngine, I just forgot that Qt WebEngine switched from WebKit to Blink. Teach me for replying before my morning caffeine, sorry!

As far as I'm aware, Electron uses Blink & V8, which are the Chromium/Chrome rendering engine and JavaScript VM.

So it would basically require porting Chromium to OS/2 :(.

Has anybody figured out how to add a certificate to the trust store in Dooble? I'm trying to use AdGuard as a proxy in Dooble to help with the ads. I'm pretty sure I added the AdGuard certificate to OpenSSL's trust store correctly, but Dooble still complains about HTTPS connections, so obviously it is looking somewhere else for the trust store.

It should be possible to edit the gcc specs file so that -pthreads automatically enables -lpthreads. That way you don't have to hack every app separately.

It's manpower, IBM took years to port OS/2 to PowerPC (32bit), with lots of money and manpower. And they had the source and access to some of the people who wrote it.

It’s really sad that all of that PPC work never made it to the x86 version. I’m assuming IBM couldn’t give the changes to AN in source form, as MS still co-owns the source?

Maybe it'll eventually be like the Inktomi/Yahoo! Traffic Server code and somebody will eventually find it sitting on a shelf somewhere...

A dumb question..

Are the OS/2 Additions even really changed that often, or does their build system just automatically bump the release version every time they cut a new one?

I’m basically wondering if it’s even worth updating them, really?

About 16 bit apps: Except some few system apps, I don't use 16 bit apps.
I don't understand why 64 bit code can't support 16 bit code, but that seems
to be the case. Note that for systems with 64 bit addressable RAM
virtualization is always an option.

When AMD designed AMD64, they figured nobody would want segmented addressing and VM86 while in “long mode” (64-bit mode), so they took it out of that mode. They’re both still there in non-long mode (32-bit mode) for backwards compatibility, of course.

I think AMD-V / VT-x work around that by letting you run a virtual 32-bit environment within your 64-world and use those features in there.

Okay, so I guess on the following line in the patch, they also added a field for IOMMU type, which needs to be added. So to make it easier, I'll just spin a new patch for the latest versions of VBox with the typo fixed.

You have to use a USB stick and copy the driver to the USB stick and then use the install in the pre boot install menu. ( I am not usre of the correct name but detailed directions are here https://www.arcanoae.com/wiki/nvme/.

Yep. I figured since the idea was to make it easier for people, however, defaulting to a setting where they have to do that isn't exactly user friendly :).  That and since VBox won't be able to boot it in BIOS (CSM) mode anyways..

Okay, here's an updated patch.

Since Lars was worried about Lewis's reaction to using os_os2ecs.png I changed it to os_os2_other.png :).

I defaulted to 1GB RAM (that seems to be what Arca Noae is recommending). It's default to SATA, and not NVMe, since:

- ArcaOS 5.0.7 still doesn't put NVME in the boot image
- VBox doesn't seem to support booting from NVMe when using legacy BIOS booting, only UEFI booting.

So maybe when 5.1 is released we can change it :).
