Applications / Re: ANPM database error
« on: August 05, 2024, 04:47:29 pm »
I think the problem is upstream as if you look at the VLC 3.0.21 not starting thread, a few of us are getting the same error.
Thanks Dave, I don't run VLC on ArcaOS, so did not check that thread. I am relieved the problem is not on my side.

Applications / ANPM database error
« on: August 05, 2024, 04:19:04 pm »
Hello all, I "regularly" check for updates with ANPM, but today it does not want to display me anything (see screenshot as attachment).

I tried the options to clean and to redo the rpm database, to no available. I could find some old web mention of that error on os2.org (dating from 2019 IIRC) but without definitive solution (I tried what was suggested there).

Anyone has an idea on how to fix that problem?

Thanks for any idea !

Applications / Re: More WinOs/2 troubles
« on: August 05, 2024, 03:57:38 pm »
Hello all.. among the few other Win 3.1 programs I tried installing yesterday, to evaluate how competitive OS/2 could have been in the early 1990s for productivity apps, Mathematica (v2 I think), Matlab 4.2c, Fortran Powerstation 1, PharLap 6 (as the Matlab wanted these libraries). WinOS/2 restarted after Mathematica and Matlab installs.
Problem is: WinOS/2 does not start anymore. I removed in win.ini / system.ini the lines referring to Fortran (nothing related to PharLap in those) but still does not start.
I guess that one of those replaced more recent system libraries, but which ones ??
Any idea ?

On an DOS command prompt type winos2 /b /? (I forgot) or win /b. Windows can be started to created a bootlog and give you a hint what went wrong.

Roderick

I tried win /b. I think the attached bootlog.txt is what it produced. Apart from failure to load some fonts, I do not see any specific error message.

Why not run the OS/2 version from Archive.org?
1. I got SS173 through eCS years ago, so I would not need to get the one on Archive except if losing my CD (which has happened through an act of God..) and losing my backup ISO.
2. Curiosity: I'd like to see if there were large differences in usability and functionalities. I have SS173 installed on ArcaOS and wonder how different that earlier Windows version is..

Applications / Lotus SmartSuite 4 on WinOS/2
« on: August 02, 2024, 06:33:43 pm »
Hello all,

The internet archive has a copy of Lotus SmartSuite 4 (last to run on Windows 3.1). On WinOS/2, I can start the installer, but as soon as it should start copying the files, the process goes to 100% CPU and nothing happens, not a single file gets copied.
I tried on a JFS drive, and on my C: (HPFS) after running spacehog (to remove space above 2GB temporarily). Nothing helped.

Did anyone try that successfully ?

Applications / Archive tool problem
« on: May 05, 2024, 07:31:12 pm »
Hello all,

I have a problem with Archive Tool: it does not start anymore. No error message on command line either, no error in popuplog.os2.

I looked in the package manager and the reinstall option is grayed out. Only uninstall cannot be chosen, which I prefer not to (the wpi list of available packages appears empty, which is was not last week.. so something may have messed up my installation).

Any idea how to fix that problem?

Applications / WordPro issues
« on: May 05, 2024, 07:27:44 pm »
Hello all,

Somehow, WordPro started having some issues, without my touching any setting nor doing any update:
- When creating a blank file, it complains that it cannot open the default.mwp (that, I checked, is in its folder, and I copied one from another installation, to no avail)
- The icons at the top have all disappeared.Ctrl+q (or the equivalent menu) does not change anything, that menu never gets selected.

Any idea how to fix that?

Do you have 2 network cards installed in the VM? Can you post your x:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd?
I even have 4... First one I keep for NAT, the others for bridged mode - second one for docking station wired, third for laptop's wifi, fourth for laptop's internal wired. I swap second and fourth when I have wired ethernet on the go, without my docking station.

Contents of setup.cmd:

route -fh
arp -f
ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
REM ifconfig lan0 nil metric 1 mtu 1500
REM ifconfig lan1 nil
REM ifconfig lan2 nil metric 1 mtu 1500
ifconfig lan3 192.168.1.200 netmask 255.255.255.0 metric 1 mtu 1500
REM ifconfig lan4 nil metric 1 mtu 1500
REM ifconfig lan5 metric 1 mtu 1500
REM ifconfig lan6 metric 1 mtu 1500
REM ifconfig lan7 metric 1 mtu 1500
dhcpstrt -i lan1
REM ifconfig sl0
ipgate off

Virtualization / ArcaOS in VirtualBox and mouse.
« on: April 04, 2024, 09:29:57 am »
I have a strange behavior from the mouse with ArcaOS 5.1 installed in VirtualBox (with standard properties of the VM / of the installation).

The pointer moves everywhere, but on the desktop, icons located in the bottom-half part of the screen cannot be clicked on. I have to click on other icons above then go with the keyboard to the folder I want to open/the app I want to start and open it with the enter key.
The xCenter at the bottom is working fine, so it seems to be specific to the desktop; it also affects full-screen win-os/2 sessions, in which nothing in the bottom-half of the screen is clickable. On Win-OS/2, the pointer also moves more randomly, sometimes it becomes difficult to click on a button even in the top half of the screen, because the pointer will go too high (or too low) and moving it towards the place to click on moves it too far.

I remember problems with VBox extensions in version 7 so I kept the version of extensions that come with VBox.

Are these known problems? Are there any known ways to solve these problems?

You should have a line like,
Code: [Select]
CALL=X:\OS2\CMD.EXE /Q /C X:\MPTN\BIN\MPTSTART.CMD >NULin config.sys with MPTSTART.CMD calling X:\MPTN\BIN\SETUP.cmd
The line is there, and yet the DHCP monitor has "DHCP client is not running".. When I run DHCPSTRT, the first line in the monitor is "initialized interface lan1"...

Yes. You can install it in parallel but you may have to redirect the settings in config.sys and tcpexit/b4... or whoever ndctl.exe is started from.
Thanks Andi. Is there somewhere a page that explains how to get NetDrive working on ArcaOS, whether side-by-side with the Arca stuff or just by itself ?

Starting DHCPSTRT by hand after getting to the WPS works, but why the heck is it not started during boot-up time? Could anyone tell me exactly how their DHCPSTRT line looks like in their config.sys ?[/li][/list]

dhcpstrt is not in config.sys but inside ?:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd:

    dhcpstrt -i lan0 0d 0

That is weird, because dhcpstrt is indeed present in this setup file... yet if I do not start it manually once the WPS has loaded, the DHCP monitor is empty with a message that DHCP has not been started..

    Networking / Netdrive and ArcaOS

Is the version of NetDrive included in ArcaOS the full version, in which many different plugins may be installed?  If yes, what is the name of the program that controls all of that (I have been out of the OS/2 ecosystem for a while, just getting back from time to time..)? If no, can one install the conventional netdrive without creating conflicts?

I do not know if this is related, but after installing tons of programs onto a virtual ArcaOS 5.1 that I just reinstalled, I found the two following problems:
    • The PATH and LIBPATH, still limited in size in config.sys, quickly go over their maximum length. It has been the same for ages, but I would be grateful if a good programmer (which I am not) could make a program into which one enters folder names that should be part of libpath (especially), then another folder for collecting all libraries, and then the program picks up all these libraries, copies them to that collection folder, favors newer versions when two files have the same name, or even prevents some files from being copied if they are known to create conflicts. But that is an entirely different topic.
    • As mentioned on the old HPFS386 topic that I have to resurrect, some usual folders / files required for HPFS386 are missing. Again, not the same topic.
    • Now let's get to the topic at hand. I did not have any network. Somehow the different interfaces are present / installed with one of them activated for DHCP, but there is no DHCPSTRT starting automatically. And yet I did install networking.. Starting DHCPSTRT by hand after getting to the WPS works, but why the heck is it not started during boot-up time? Could anyone tell me exactly how their DHCPSTRT line looks like in their config.sys ?
