Applications / Re: XWP v1.0.13 Beta 1
« on: August 31, 2019, 05:35:00 pm »
I have a strange problem.

Since it is impossible to install ArcaOS on a Ryzen based motherboard unless you clone the drive I setup an ASUS board with an AMD A-SERIES A8-9600 processor that does allow the install from Aos 5.0.4.  Now thinking I would update the clone image I updated XWP v1.0.12 to this beta wondering if the 'no switch off' problem had been fixed, unfortunately it has not and this is the problem since all the Ryzen 3 2200G based units with the same motherboard do switch off without problems.

From what I can see there shouldn't be that much difference between the A8-9600 and the Ryzen 3 2200G that would cause the problem.

Any ideas or observations will be appreciated.

BTW everything with this XWP beta works except as above.

Sorry, I learned a long time ago that you can't just add/use windows DLLs to Odin - they don't work.  The OS/2 DLLs are LX while the Win DLLs are ME.

ISTR FF 38 works better with older hardware,

Just an addition.  It runs very well on my AMD Ryzen based computers both with ArcOS and Zorin Linux.

Some of the stupidity I'm seeing with the browsers is very reminiscent of Microsoft's war against Netscape but now it looks like Google Chrome has some 'oddities' that web designers are using to the detriment of other browsers.

Edit: I should have added that I also use FF 60.8.0 esr on the Linux computers as well.

The IT industry are gearing up for the subscription model for all of Microsoft's cloud offerings.  There will not be any more 'buy once and use forever' Office offerings - if it is in the cloud you pay per month.

For those living and working in Europe there is also the GDPR which governs where data can be stored - if MS moves it out of Europe then the owner of the data can be held responsible if the data is leaked.

Last thing, who trusts a company that regularly uses its operating system to scan your computer and send data about what you are working on, your banking details and other sensitive information back to home office the be 'evaluated'?

I don't remember ever seeing any type of manual for Oden but it is very simple to make a program object (see attachment) and if the program doesn't work it will generally tell you what is missing.

BTW, the full 'Parameters' line in the example is:   "d:\odin\program files\irfanview\i_view32.exe"  Note the quote marks - they are necessary.

Thank you Dmitriy, at least I can continue proof reading and editing, hopefully without problems.

A question, How backward compatible is it?  In other words will it run Qt 4 programs or do we need to keep our Qt 4 install?

I ask because I have about 25 Qt 4 programs that get from daily to weekly use.

Like Dave I installed it on my Linux Mint computer and I too am totally not impresses with the UI and the fact that there doesn't appear any way to change it.

Not a browser I would use unless forced to do so - even firefox is heading that way and don't mention chrome.

Hi Paul,The original remote setup was the testbed for some clients but it has evolved over the years and I now use a TP-Link TL-R600VPN dedicated VPN and Firewall unit which does make it more secure as well as easier to manage.

Thanks for your help. if you hadn't mentioned the two DLLs I would have been reverting back to the much older version.

Hi Paul,

Yes, they are old but they just keep on working.  I have 4 of them, 2 D-Link DNS-323 and 2 D-Link DNS-320, they are all on 24/7/365 and have been since late 2009.  Two are on the network and the other 2 are remote and backup the network pair overnight using rsync.

Since the system has been working without problems why change?

Hi Paul,

They not only need a fast configurable ad blocker but a javascript blocker is a necessity considering the number of exploits that are delivered through javascript.  Without those two it is going to be almost useless (I would not let it near anything like internet banking and other sensitive sites).

Couldn't find the RP so I went to Paul's site and downloaded the zip from there, extracted the SMBCLN49.DLL put it in the programs\ndfs\ndplugs directory, rebooted and all is well, I have connection back to my NAS boxes.

Hi Dave, it was an update using the 'update' function of the ArcaOS 5.0.4 DVD.

Will look for the RPM you mentioned when I start the test computer again.
