Title: FeatherNotes for OS/2
Post by: Jochen Schäfer on November 08, 2021, 08:40:26 am
I'm happy to annouce a full featured release of FeatherNotes 0.10.0 for OS/2.
Head over here: https://github.com/josch1710/FeatherNotes/releases/tag/v0.10.0-os2. There are two binary packages: One is just a zip of the needed files, one is an RPM. For the plain ZIP, you need to install Qt5 and Hunspell. The RPM should pull in the required packages.

Description:
FeatherNotes (by Pedram Pourang, a.k.a. Tsu Jan tsujan2000@gmail.com)  is a lightweight Qt hierarchical notes-manager for Linux. It is independent of any desktop environment and has:

Have fun.

I have updated FeatherNotes to version 0.10.1. You can find the packages here: https://github.com/josch1710/FeatherNotes/releases/tag/v0.10.1-os2 (https://github.com/josch1710/FeatherNotes/releases/tag/v0.10.1-os2).

I have updated FeatherNotes to version 0.10.1. You can find the packages here: https://github.com/josch1710/FeatherNotes/releases/tag/v0.10.1-os2 (https://github.com/josch1710/FeatherNotes/releases/tag/v0.10.1-os2).

Hi Jochen

I tried installing the FeatherNotes RPM package and I get the message below.

I installed the zip package and created a program icon.  When I execute it nothing happens.

As for Featherpad, when I close the program, it appears to close. However, the icon still shows active although the program is closed.  The taskbar does not show it.  When I go into TOP, it shows still active and I have to kill it.

This is with ArcoOS 5.07 with all the latest updates.

Hi Jochen

I tried installing the FeatherNotes RPM package and I get the message below.

The ZIP package is not a RPM package. It's just a zipped version of the unixroot layout. It's included for people not using RPM.
If you use RPM, you should download the rpm package and install it via RPM or the Arcanoae GUI.

As for Featherpad, when I close the program, it appears to close. However, the icon still shows active although the program is closed.  The taskbar does not show it.  When I go into TOP, it shows still active and I have to kill it.

Yes, this is correct behaviour: The first instance spins up a server. If you start another instance with one or more filenames, it contacts the server and the server instance opens the file(s). If you want to open FeatherPad as e.g. EPM, use the command line option "-s", which starts Featherpad standalone with as many processes you want and each process ends when it's window is closed.

Wrong version of hunspell installed. Jochen can say more but I'd guess you need the one from netlabs-exp

I only use release repos. I made that mistake once. I will look tomorrow at my build version.

I downloaded both packages.

Trying to install with YUM gave the earlier error message.

I unzipped the zip package and installed the USR directory over the USR directory in my root directory.
When the program object is picked, the program fails giving the following error message in the popuplog.os2:

03-20-2022  20:56:57  SYS2070  PID 007a  TID 0001  Slot 00a8
D:\USR\BIN\FEATHERNOTES.EXE
FEATHERNOTES->QT5CORE.__ZN2Qt4endlER11QTextStream

I used PMDLL to check all the dependencies and they are all there with nothing missing.

This seems to indicate that qt5core.dll is present, but not the correct version. Try updating it.

me again, now trying to replicate the Feathernotes 0.10.1 installation on a different OS2 4.52 virtual machine (Virtualbox); after having worked around some dependencies error-alert  about Pyton version and QT5 compatibility (initially that system did not have any QT5 implementation), now I arrived here when running FeatherNotes.exe -see image- and do not catch what to do next.

tks Martin, I have identical description in my stdcpp6.dll .
The difference  I can think about with the other system where I could successfully install the working version of FeatherNotes, is that was a "QT5 ready" one, meaning that has been setted for the Simple Browser hosting, with all the necessary QT5 stuff as described in this topic   https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,2956.0.html (https://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,2956.0.html)

EDIT (5 mins late) : unbelievable, after a further system reboot (the third one), now everything works fine !
Very Well  :D :D

 What is the output of

Code: [Select]
yum list installed libstdc++

libstdc++.i686  9.2.0-5.oc00  installed

guess it has to be  libstdc++.pentium4  9.2.0-5.oc00  instead.
By now I'm unable to switch to its pentium4 version because of the ANPM connection blackout today, I'll try soon as ANPM will be available again.
Thank you

Hi Michael, Qt itself is now dependent on SSE2 so is only available as Pentium 4, it is actually built with -march=i686 but SSE is enabled.
Simplest, if you have a CPU that supports SSE2 is just to change your platform under tools in ANPM. It usually works but sometimes there are weird conflicts which can usually be fixed by right clicking the conflicting package and choosing "Get specific release" and changing to the Pentium 4 version.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum.

Is there any specific reason why you are using i686 on ANPM?
Did you tried installing the petium4 version of FeatherNotes on your system? I think that in the majority of cases you should not have issues.

Hi Mike

Give it try.
Download FeatherNotes-1.1.0-0.oc00.pentium4.rpm (https://github.com/josch1710/FeatherNotes/releases/download/v1.1.0-os2/FeatherNotes-1.1.0-0.oc00.pentium4.rpm) and run "yum install FeatherNotes-1.1.0-0.oc00.pentium4.rpm" and see what shows up. I guess it will coexists, but let us know if it shows any error.

Looks as though it's saving the file in UTF-8 but opening it in the default system encoding (850).

I glanced briefly at the file open/save code in fn.cpp; it doesn't look as though the QTextStream object is setting the codec anywhere.

Are you building with Qt5 or Qt6? Apparently, the text codec logic changed radically between the two versions.

For what I see with PMDLL, FeatherNotes is compiled with Qt5.

Yes, that's correct as per Qt5 documentation. The code is certainly under the assumption, that the default nowadays is UTF-8.
I fixed the issue for OS/2 and made a new release, which can be downloaded on my Github page.

Qt6 has similar issues with 'special' characters. I wonder if code needs to be added or the Euro to https://github.com/bitwiseworks/qtbase-os2/blob/master/src/plugins/platforms/os2/qos2keymapper.cpp#L163

Browsing the code Paul linked to above, I saw this note:

// The only known situation when KC_VIRTUALKEY is present but
// vkey is zero is when Alt+Shift is pressed to switch the
// keyboard layout state from latin to national and back.
// It seems that this way the system informs applications about
// layout changes: chm.chr is 0xF1 when the user switches
// to the national layout (i.e. presses Alt + Left Shift)
// and 0xF0 when he switches back (presses Alt + Right Shift).
// We assume this and restore fs, vkey, scancode and chr accordingly.

So maybe Andreas could try hitting the left <alt><shift> before trying to type a euro symbol?

Regards,

EDIT: looks like Feathernotes uses <alt><shift> to left and right justify text, so probably not gonna work unfortunately...

the file itself should be ok. used this one as a template. but all of a sudden on all (!)my fnx-files the tree-function vanished. tried to replace the program. also updated some rpm-packages and dlls. but nothing helped. The PM-dll-program didn't complain about anything. what dll is responsible for the tree-function?

cannot upload fnx-files here it seems. had to replace the ending to "txt". you need to rechange that to "fnx"

I tried to PM you several times, but the messages seems to vanish. I cannot even see them in my Sent folder.

To the issue at hand:
In the provided file seems to be no problems. All persisted data in the XML are shown in FeatherNotes.
I can add and delete items, then save and reload. All items are there.

Can you provide more infos about what leads you to assume lost items?
