Comments, Suggestions & Questions / Re: OS2World Layout

Hi Martin,

Quote
Ian, I also like it that way, but I noticed that other sites don't use that design anymore. And when I asked some youngsters they said the webpage is "old school".

I know, they want stuff that fits on a tablet/smartphone screen. They also like things that you can 'click' through with your fingers on a touch screen, with bright and animated screens, they don't understand the data or work cost involved, all very instant gratification for themselves with the strange notion that anyone with a webpage has a developer on staff to look after it all, oh, thats you :)

I think we have been around to long but I notice my daughter as she gets older is slowly evolving to the same likes as myself, probably because she is finding a lot is actually easier on her laptop than her smartphone. Another way of saying that once the novelty has worn off, something more practical becomes appealing. I think you would also have to reduce the number of items in each front page list to cope for tablet/smartphone users - I think the current number is good as long as your using a PC but then PC's are apparently for dinosaurs :(

From the POV of smartphone/tablet users, I will admit that os2world.com needs work, or maybe my fingers are just to big. Is there a front end that can reformat for smartphone like some other websites are doing, and what sort of work is involved ? Is there a big enough need or can it be left for 'later' ?

Keeping in mind a lot of that front end software lists OS/2 as O*=Mobile device so we have to keep changing our UA tag to something else.  At least if someone that uses OS/2-eCS is involved the UA problem will be sorted reasonably quickly the first time they use an OS/2-eCS based browser.

You could simply change the color scheme ?
Also look at other front end themes that keep the basic data setup but mabe modernise it.
Just throwing stuff out there.

Hi Martin,

I like the front page of os2world.com as it currently is, like list, newsgroups etc I find if more logical, I can scan and click on what interests me,
quick, concise and to the point :)

Heartbleed Bug Exploited Over Extensible Authentication Protocol

from /. http://it.slashdot.org/story/14/06/02/1337246/heartbleed-bug-exploited-over-extensible-authentication-protocol

Keywords:- wpa_supplicant, OpenSSL, EAP, TLS (Wireless networking), Keeping WiFi integration up to date.

Quote
"While most organizations have patched the Heartbleed bug in their OpenSSL installations, a security expert has uncovered new vectors for exploiting the vulnerability, which can impact enterprise wireless networks, Android devices, and other connected devices. Dubbed 'Cupid,' the new attack method was recently presented by Portuguese security researcher Luis Grangeia, who debunked theories that Heartbleed could only be exploited over TCP connections, and after the TLS handshake. Unlike the initial Heartbleed attack, which took place on TLS connections over TCP, the Cupid attack happens on TLS connections over the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), an authentication framework typically used in wireless networks and peer-to-peer connections.

The researcher has confirmed that default installations of wpa_supplicant, hostapd, and freeradius (RADIUS server implementation) can be exploited on Ubuntu if a vulnerable version of OpenSSL is utilized. Mobile devices running Android 4.1.0 and 4.1.1 also use wpa_supplicant to connect to wireless networks, so they're also affected. Everything that uses OpenSSL for EAP TLS is susceptible to Cupid attacks. While he hasn't been able to confirm it, the expert believes iPhones, iPads, OS X, other RADIUS servers besides freeradius, VoIP phones, printers, and various commercial managed wireless solutions could be affected."

Did you know how much you can find out about me by googling "I am the computer, it is me"  with the quotes..

Hi Sergey,

I've sent Pete a personal email as well, to his personal email address, been a couple of days with no reply.

I think it's time to sit on hands for a week to see if anything happens.

335
No idea, Pete's gone very quiet, and I never did get my copy of his website :(

Hi Andy

Just checking one of the IP's

[D:\apps\jalbum]host 192.53.103.108
108.103.53.192.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer ptbtime1.ptb.de.
looks like it probably NTP to me.

192.168.0.1 is also an internal IP address (should be non routable),
could this be your modem/router looking for NTP ?

In injoy, are you logging data for dropped/refused connections ?
or is this a normal allowed connection ?

You should be able to see daytimed.exe running if you bring up a process list.
should be a config file around somewere as well, this will likely list IP's that
daytime will try.

Boris, without saying anything I will agree with what Greg Pringle has said.

I'm also not going to say what I'm ex of, and I'm not an American but I have done many things in my short life in varied fields.

General Discussion / Re: os2sam on bitcointalk.org
« on: April 12, 2014, 05:12:20 pm »
Hi Boris,

I've never mined on GPU's, and I agree with the unprofitable bit, it wouldn't get anywhere near the 80Gh/s I currently do..
I do know people still mine with GPU's but I suspect thats simply because they still have the setup, they certainly shouldn't expect to
make any money from it. In fact many current miner software nolonger supports CPU mining, and many are I suspect going to drop
GPU mining in the near future to stream line the code.

I use ASIC's incase your wondering :)

Compiling bfgminer would be the easy bit I suspect, the problem would more likely be the USB com drivers and/or HID drivers depending on what USB based miners you are using, and the interface chosen.

Just wondering if it's someone here ?

I keep thinking I should at least attempt to compile bfgminer for OS/2 so I can dump the laptop and run my miner via the server.

Congratulations OS2World.com.

It should also be mentioned that Martin Iturbide puts a lot of time and effort into os2world, I don't know were he finds the time but he does !

Hardware / Re: Two Sound Cards on OS/2-eCS
« on: March 03, 2014, 04:41:39 pm »
In the late 90's I had two sounds cards installed, think one was an AWE with the MIDI daughter card and the other was a SB16 or maybe a Vibra16 but I do know that I had to set IRQ's, addr's and IO ports differently on each card so there were no conflicts, then load drivers for both cards, each driver specifying the IRQ's, ports etc.

I cant remember what I did software wise, possibly set up what went where in the System Multimedia setup panel ?
I might have had to edit mmpm2.ini, so long ago, another world, a different life.

Quote
I ask this because today almost every new mainboard comes with two sound cards (or what it looks like two sound cards).  One of the regular sound card (with ports in the front and other in the back) and other that is the HDMI sound out port.

Just went back and reread your post :)
The above bit is 'normally' simply mixing, not two different sound cards. ie, you select were you want the outputs to go to depending on program or inputs.
I guess it comes down to the motherboard though, a manufacturer might have made an upmarket MB for a vertical market maybe.

Some audio chipsets have completely separate input paths and completely separate output paths but its all done with high speed digital multiplexing and pathways before it hits the DAC's, so you can do some fancy stuff but it all comes down to the actual mixing. I have seen some where a sound card with 4 completely separate dual channels(read chipsets) on it, that I would classify as 4 sounds cards but it uses the one driver (not OS/2 unfortunately). Other stuff, its simply easier to use an external USB connected mixer.

[edited again, my speeling is bad when I get tired]

General Discussion / Re: What is European Software Solutions - XEU.com ?
« on: February 26, 2014, 05:16:46 pm »
Hi Martin,

I received it a while ago, it was more to do with back end stuff and not a customer email but I see nothing in it that is sensitive so there it is. I'm surprised there hasn't been an official announcement yet. It is possible they are still sorting out the system split etc before a general announcement (maybe) as I've noticed there have been a few website hiccups.

Think it has a lot to do with resources (limited). This is purely conjecture on my part.

I see no reason to check before posting this, it's reasonably straight forward and it
will clear up somethings. I have no relationship to Mensys and/or xeu.com apart
from being a customer and information broker :o)

Dear ________,

Mensys bv has grown as an organization over the past 10 years. Now we
have decided that it is time for renewed focus again. We again want to
be a specialist in what we do and thereby be innovative and deliver the
highest quality possible .

Therefor we have decided to split Mensys bv into two companies.
Mensys bv is now focussing at sales & support of software mainly in
Western Europe and for various applications.
XEU.com /European Software Solutions/ limited is focusing on software
development and support for our own software products, including
eComStation.

So from now on your support and invoicing will formally be from XEU.com
bv. But the same people will be involved with eCS so for the rest
nothing changes for you

If you have any questions please let me know,

Roderick Klein

Web applications / Re: Ungodly slow localhost search

Hi Dave,

I found localhost really slow when cups was working here but my local address of 192.168.0.2 was fairly quick (still not instant)

Sounds like cups is binding to hostid, not localhost - maybe ?

just a thought I though into the ring for someone to check if possible. Whatever the cause is, it does sound like somethings not right in cups ip binding.

Hi klipp

in your x:\mptn\etc\hosts file you should have

127.0.0.1             localhost

and in your x:\mptn\bin\setup.cmd you should have

ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1

apart from that I've no idea, I keep meaning to install cups myself, probably will do when I really need to use our home networked printer.
(I'm happy with my personal HP deskjet 9300)

Then try Dave's idea and use your local external IP address.
