Hardware / Re: Hardware Compatibility Wishlist for 2023

Personally I think WIFI is the biggest thing, followed by multiple monitor support, and then USB-C accessories.
Multi-monitor was one of the important things for me since many years. But now as I have one big 42.5" I never want to go back to the usual 2x 24" I had before.

Programming / Re: WebSite / HTML editor - what do we have?

Not sure if the StarOffice included 'thing' qualifies for you as HTML editor. But long time ago I build one with it.

Of course today I would try out the Seamonkey included as SM already runs all day long.

General Discussion / Re: ArcaOS on Youtube @MichaelMJD

By the way it is still marked as an infected site by Bitdefender.
Maybe you should discuss this with Bitdefender. It's there fault it seems. Both mantis and ArcaNoae main website works from here.

Perhaps the video generated so much traffic on the ArcaNoae site that the servers went down because of this

No. See above.

All speculation.
Agree.

As I usually don't follow links to videos I've no clue what was the video all about. Can someone who saw the video sum up what was shown there?

Applications / OpenOffice default Font Arial -> Calibri?
« on: January 29, 2023, 10:41:37 am »
How can I set the default font to Calibri? Usually f.i. in Calc font is set to Arial. I think this is the same for all platforms. Is there a way to set the default to Arial? Do I have to change the default templates for that?

Gregg, I think you're latest 4os2 sources are in https://github.com/StevenLevine/4os2, right? Have you tagged your 3.11 release there? I'm not very experienced with git/github but currently I see no release tags or releases.

Yes the latest sources are in https://github.com/StevenLevine/4os2. I have not tagged the release and probably can't tag it exactly because of how the updating of the repo was done. If you wish I will tag what is there now since it is close to the 3.11 release.

I wasn't aware of the bitbucket repo. Do you have code that isn't in the git repo? I'm sure Steven would give you access to the git repo. My vote is to go with github for this. Thanks

Gregg

Searching my emails I found that the last time I checked out from perforce was around 24.04.2020. I've nothing newer than that (which could be useful for others). So most probably Steven has the same or newer.

Tagging - I like it when properly done. But when it's not easy to tag exactly the released version it's better you wait and tag when you make the next 3.12 release (or some intermediate version distributed with ArcaOS).

github is fine cause both of you seem to have arranged with it. I mean do what you like as you're the main contributor during the last years. I don't have plans to contribute much as my work on a graphical overlay (to overcome 8k screen buffer) stalls since years anyway. I only prefer to have a common place with current sources accessible to others. In other words keep it open source :-).

I thought Steven is working on including old commit data before he wanted to create a new git repo (or did we discuss this for openwatcom?). Do you know anything about that? I fear it's impossible (to hard to do) without the help of Perforce. At least that's what I understand back then.

Please check how http://trac.netlabs.org/4os2/wiki looks now.
I'm open to suggestions.
Greggs latest version is at the netlabs ftp too. I guess it's the same as at Hobbes. I can upload new versions at netlabs ftp if I'm aware of.

Andi B. Is it possible to sync your bitbucket code with Stevens Github, or both development took different routes and it is not possible?
We always worked at the same sources until the situation with perforce got to cumbersome/impossible to deal with. I've no clue why Steven created the one at github, I wasn't aware of this since a few days. Before I created the bitbucket repository I started to discuss this at the AN dev list. Also because I saw Steven made some versions for AN which I couldn't find the sources for. IIRC there was no feedback so I went ahead and created the bitbucket repo. Maybe Steven forgot about this or didn't recognize. Anyway if the github repo is the one where the current coders work it's better to delete my bitbucket repo. But then we should discuss the access rights there.

Long talking but in the end I think Gregg should decide how to move on with 4os2 cause he's the one who contributed most the last years.

Last message is from 2014. I can not post anything else there, I guess it is read only. I haven't used a Newsgroup reader in years.
I think there were no newer post than the ones from 06.04.2014.

gmane.org.netlabs.community was active until January 2020 at least. But I think not longer.

I just had a curious problem with my T540p. I've different eCS / OS/2 / ArcaOS installation next to Win10/7 on this Thinkpad. I now decided to make an additional NTFS partition available for Win and never thought this will lead to such catastrophic problem. Steps I did -
- booted OS/2 and with DFSee I created a new NTFS partition in den middle of the disk where there was some free space
- booted W10 and formated the newly partition with NTFS

A few days afterwards I wanted to boot one of the OS/2 partitions. But booting hangs after checking drive E:. Drive D: was checked before but the other JFS partitions afterwards were not checked (M: V: L: T: O: R: P: ...). The system simply hangs.

As all my installations do have JFS /autocheck:* I can't start any of the installed systems. Moreover this system can't be booted by the ArcaOS stick (known issue for this T540p). I can't boot from an old eCS CD too. I also didn't find any ALT-F1 cmd line working. What works was booting DOS from DFSee stick and changes partition type of the partition AFTER the new NTFS partition from 06 (FAT) to 07 and fix/align the one partition AFTER the NTFS one.

I think when I formated the NTFS partition from W10 this does also overwrite some stuff of the next partition behind. Or at least crippled some of the partition info of all these logical partitions. And afterwards OS/2 can't handle that and simply stopped booting. Although I do all my partitioning stuff with DFSee, Win always finds some way to destroy something. Or say it in other words, does some alignment on the disk which OS/2 can't deal with.

Now I've my systems booting again as usual. But I can't access the partition after the NTFS one anymore. Probably I've to delete it. Never thought that a simple format from W10 of an already aligned partition (with DFSee running from OS/2) can make such damage. Maybe I should let some gap around OS/2 partitions in future whenever I prepare a partition for Win.

I have a question about the mailing list. Are those working?
No. TTBOMK these lists are dead since years.

2) It says 4OS2 mailing list is mirrored to Gmane. http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.org.netlabs.4os2.user
I can not access it. (Time out)

Does the mailing list works? Is there any way to access those mailing list history?
gmane don't work anymore since 2-3 years too. I've some old messages here in my SM profile from all these lists. But no clue if there is anything worth the effort to export/save/make available these. There's nothing new there.

Andi B, if you still have access to edit the http://4os2.netlabs.org web page I would recommend to link users to http://trac.netlabs.org/4os2 and try to consolidate everything there.
The link is already there ;-) - Links.... No clue if I can still edit it, will check when I'm booted up the right OS. But you're right. These sites are not very easy do read/follow.

I get the feeling this is an "OS/2 on hardware" place ... virtualization & methods using it become inflammatory on this site, which means I've wasted too much of everyone's time. It only took a few postings to figure that out ... my apologies to those who are very happy with OS/2 on physical.

The correct pieces are listed for my solution in those few postings, but the sales pitch fell short ...

I will look for other sites/forums on virtualization ...
I've to say I don't completely understand all your postings. Probably because my English is not well enough. But why don't you answer the few questions above? Is it cause you're programmed to leave a forum whenever someone realizes your an AI?

to use virtualization to run x64 apps from within OS/2
That's not true. Either you still don't understand the whole thing or you're spreading false information intentionally. You can't run 64 bit applications from within OS/2. You can ran it side by side with 16 and 32 bit OS/2 applications when you use virtualization. If you've a 64 bit host OS then they run on them. Not within OS/2. And OS/2 ist just 'another' application running under this host (abstracted by a virtualization layer). If you're running OS/2 as a host and run some 64 bit app within a guest (don't think that this even works but ...) you never could get the advantages of this 64 bit app.

More and more I think JTA is not more than a test for an AI. He/she/it floods this forum with a lot of text which is hardly related to any of the questions asked here. Answers to questions to him/her/... are very long, but most of the time not don't get to the point. Here you have another few you can deal with - JTA who's behind you? Where are the specific answers to the questions asked before? Which OS/2 application do you use? Which specific program do you think runs better under ArcaOS than on other OSes? For which tasks are you using OS/2 beside testing if it work in a VM? How did you circumvent the problems an ArcaOS installation gives in VBOX 7?

Interesting. Then http://trac.netlabs.org/4os2 is outdated and should not be used anymore.

For the OS/2 full version/installer Franks 2.0 (1.9+) builds are the more or less last official and most preferred version. Have to search for the link...

I think I've dowloaded the last (or near the last) official OW and 4os2 sources from the perforce repository before it went down. I've set up a non-official git repository for 4os2. For OW Steven and/or Michal (?) wanted to setup one at that time. Unfortunately it seems he doesn't find the time to do this. One problem is if I setup a git repository then it does not include the change history. So it's not so useful as it should. Moreover I wanted to have the official maintainers to set up a new official home.

Anyway if there is an urgent need I can try to upload the (nearly) latest perforce sources at sourceforge. Unfortunately checking in to my bitbucket account (my preferred place until a few months) doesn't work anymore.
